Punjab govt puts on hold release of Class 12 history book

The Punjab government has decided to put on hold the release of Class 12 history book till the newly-constituted oversight committee examined it and decided on the way forward, an official spokesperson said today. The spokesperson said here that following the chief minister's decision to set up the six-member oversight committee, headed by eminent historian Prof Kirpal Singh, it was felt that it would be better for the panel to undertake a review of the book before its further release. The Punjab School Education Board has also been directed to facilitate the committee for completing this task at the earliest. The committee also comprises former vice chancellor Guru Nanak Dev University Prof J S Grewal, former pro-vice chancellor GNDU Prof Prithipal Singh Kapur, Emeritus Prof of History Panjab University Prof Indu Banga, besides two eminent historians to be nominated by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC). UK schools evacuated over bomb threat emails

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) today launched an investigation after a number of schools across England received threatening emails warning of a bomb attack. West Midlands Police said the emails are believed to be "false and malicious" as schools across the country were advised to contact local police. "Police are aware of emails circulating to a number of schools in the West Midlands and nationally this morning (Tuesday May 8) making bomb threats at this stage it is believed they are false and malicious," a West Midlands Police spokesperson said. "Schools are some of the safest and most secure public spaces with well-rehearsed safety plans in place to deal with a range of emergencies. Staff are highly trained and the well-being of students is their top priority," the spokesperson added. The threats were made to schools in London, Uxbridge, Middlesex, Warwickshire and the West Midlands. "We are aware of a number of threatening emails being sent to schools and are investigating .

4 women hit by speeding car after police recruitment test

Four women candidates who had finished a police recruitment test in Mumbai today were injured after being hit by a speeding car. The women, aged around 20 years, were walking to the Vikhroli railway station after their test when they were knocked down by a speeding car, police said. They were rushed to the nearby Mahatma Phule municipal hospital, police said, adding that an investigation into the incident is underway. The injured women are identified as Kajal Karde, Deepali Kale, Chitrali Pange, and Chaitali Dorge, all from Pune district. They were students of a "police training academy" at Shirur and had appeared for the mandatory physical test of running. They were hit by the car at around 11 am on the Vikhroli eastern express highway, police said.

CBI arrests 3 for luring students into adopting unfair means in NEET

The CBI has arrested three persons for allegedly trying to secure seats for their candidates in medical colleges using unscrupulous means in the the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) held on May 6. Based on a complaint of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the CBI arrested Mohit Kumar of Uttar Pradesh's Khurja district, Manoj Kumar Sikka of Ludhiana, Punjab, and Ashwani Tomar of Akruti Education, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi. The CBSE alleged that the trio conspired with "unknown candidates" to get them seats in medical colleges using "illegal, unfair and unscrupulous means" in NEET-UG, "thereby depriving the deserving ones". "Searches were conducted on the residential and official premises of the accused in Delhi, Khurja and Ludhiana, leading to recovery of incriminating documents including original educational certificates, admit cards of NEET exam, blank cheques, rubber stamps of educational institutions, etc.," CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said ...

Bareilly Dargah issues fatwa against Jinnah portrait

In the wake of the controversy over Jinnah's portrait in Aligarh Muslim University, Dargah Aala Hazrat, in Bareilly, has issued a fatwa stating that no Muslim should stand by Md. Ali Jinnah, as he is the "founder of an enemy nation".The controversy surrounding Jinnah's poster triggered after BJP Aligarh MP Satish Gautam wrote a letter to AMU's Vice-Chancellor seeking an explanation on the portrait of Pakistan's founder in the students' union office.The portrait of Jinnah has been hanging on a wall in the students union's office at AMU for decades.Last week, a clash broke out between students of the AMU and the police over the matter.Internet services had also been suspended in the varsity for a brief period to prevent the communal flare-up over the issue.

7th CPC: HC seeks Delhi govt reply on plea over alleged delay in implementation in pvt schools

The Delhi High Court today sought response from the Directorate of Education (DoE) on a plea by a private unaided schools association alleging that the Delhi government was delaying the implementation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission's recommendations in such institutions causing hardship to teachers, students and parents. Justice Sunil Gaur issued notice to the DoE and the Lieutenant Governor on the plea but refused to stay a April 2018 decision of the DoE that barred several private schools from implementing the 7th CPC, while allowing others to go ahead. The counsel for the petitioner association, the Action Committee Unaided Recognised Private Schools, said the matter has far reaching consequences and private schools were entirely dependent on tuition fees. The counsel said the April 13 order of the government would also contribute to the delay in implementation of the recommendations, apart from leading to exodus of teachers from the schools, which have been barred for the ..

IIT KGP's VGSOM records 100 per cent placement

IIT Kharagpurs Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM) has recorded 100 per cent placement during the final placement process for the class of 2018. The batch comprising 111 students bagged 126 offers at the end of final placement session, an IIT KGP statement said today. ITC Ltd, Titan, Amazon, JP Morgan, CRISIL, HSBC were top recruiters among the 68 companies that participated in the placement session, the statement said. Several companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Nomura and Trident Group also visited the VGSOM campus for the first time, it said. Data analyst, product management, strategic analyst, financial analyst, operations manager and marketing manager were some of the roles that were offered by the different organisations. BITS-Pilani Hyd campus students protest over fee hike

A section of students of BITS Pilani campushere are on a protest for the past three days against the hike in fee for coming academic year. The students are taking out protest marches within the campus alleging that the management had increased the fees by nearly 17 per cent against the normal hike of 15 per cent. They were also staging protest in front of the residence of the campus director, a student said. "With this kind of fee hike, we will be forced to take a second loan to complete the course. The fee in our institutions is higher than that is collected in other institutions such as IITs and NITs," a second year B.Tech student said today. Nearly every second boy who appeared for PSEB class 10 exam failed

Nearly every second boy who appeared for the Class 10 examination, conducted by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) this year, flunked the exam, while the girls fared much better with 69.13 per cent of them clearing it. According to the results declared today, of the 2,11,521 boys who appeared for the exam, only 1,10,655 could manage to pass, registering a pass percentage of 52.31. Of the 1,56,774 girls who took the exam, 1,08,380 cleared it. However, the overall pass percentage of the class 10 exam was recorded at 59.47. In 2016 and 2017, the overall pass percentage was 72.25 and 57.50 respectively. A total of 3,68,295 students had appeared for the class 10 exams this year, a PSEB spokesperson said. Gurpreet Singh of Harkrishan Sahib Public Senior secondary School, Ludhiana, topped the exam with 98 per cent marks, while the second position was bagged by Jasmeen Kaur of Shishu Model High School in Kapurthala with 97.85 per cent marks. ICSE, ISC exam results to be declared on May 14

The results of the ICSE Class 10 and ISC Class 12 examinations will be announced on May 14. The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations, which conducts the exams, will announce the result at 3 pm. "The council will announce the results at 3 PM on May 14. Centre approves medical college for Daman-Diu, Dadra & Nagar

The Centre has approved to set up the first medical college for the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli (DNH), an official said today. The Union government has allocated Rs 189 crore for the construction of the medical college, which will come up at Sayli in Silvassa (the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli) and will start functioning from the academic year 2019-20, said Praful Patel, the administrator of the two Union Territories. "As promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the people of Daman-Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli during his visit on February 24, the central government has approved a medical college for which Rs 189 crore has been approved by the Union Home ministry," Patel told PTI.
