Union Food Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack Dayal Singh College governing body chairman Amitabh Sinha for hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community. The Union minister, who briefed the prime minister on the issue today, said despite a written assurance by Prakash Javadekar on January 16 this year that the name of the college would not be changed, its management deliberately "inflamed" the sentiments of the Sikh community by putting up banners changing the name of the college to Vande Matram Dayal Singh College at its annual prize distribution function on April 25. Earlier today, Javadekar said the HRD ministry will not allow Dyal Singh (Evening) College to be renamed Dyal Singh Vande Mataram College and will take action against its management committee for doing so without consent. Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today called the stone-pelting incident on a school bus in Shopian district "hooliganism" but stopped short of condemning the attack in which a Class 2 student was injured. "The stone-throwing incident in Shopian on a school bus is quite disturbing and one fails to understand why a school bus carrying children was targeted," he said in a statement. He said those who indulge in "such hooliganism" should realise that these actions "tarnish our movement and provide an opportunity to our adversary to defame it". He said it is the duty of each Kashmiri to "safeguard the people's movement for which immense sacrifices are being given and do no such thing that will be detrimental to it in any way". Miscreants hurled stones at a school bus carrying nearly 35 students at Zavoora in Shopian district this morning. A Class 2 student suffered head injuries in the attack.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) in a circular on March 5 notified that fresh reservation rosters for the scheduled castes/scheduled tribes category has to be prepared keeping department/subject as a unit instead of university/college. "The delegation appraised Gandhi of the implications of the 5th March letter from the UGC, asking for implementation of department/subject-wise roster, instead of the current practice of taking the university/college as a unit. This would lead to a drastic reduction in the number of reserved positions as is already seen from the advertisements that have come out," DUTA president Rajib Ray said in a statement. Gandhi promised to help them in every possible way to get the matter resolved, he added. "He also assured the ...

The Supreme Court today upheld the Kerala High Court verdict striking down two conditions the state government had set for schools seeking its NoC for CBSE affiliation -- three acres land and 300 students on its roll -- saying the state was seeking to "arbitrarily" impose its authority on educational institutions. The top court termed the conditions imposed on schools by the state government seeking its No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for CBSE affiliation as "arbitrary" and "without any rationale basis". A bench of justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta dismissed the appeal of the Kerala government challenging the high court's decision. "The fundamental right to free and compulsory education to all children between the age of 6 and 14 years postulates good quality education and not just education for the sake of providing education. Regulation of such education is permissible by law and not by executive fiat," the bench said. It said that unfortunately, in this batch of petitions, the ...

Never used 'encrypted' question papers to prevent leaks: CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today clarified that no"encrypted" question papers were used in conducting any board examination this year as a measure to avoid leaks. LU rectifies rules, Aadhaar not needed for admission

The Lucknow University has amended a guideline that had made Aadhaar number mandatory for candidates filling online admission forms. "Aadhar card is not compulsory in the online application process of University of Lucknow. Inadvertently, there was an oversight in the admission form filling guidelines regarding this and this error has been corrected," the varsity's Director (PR) Prof NK Pandey said in a press note. No form would be rejected on the basis of not filling of the Aadhaar number, he said in note issued last night. Significantly, in March this year, the Supreme Court had put an interim stay on the requirement of Aadhaar for filing application forms of various competitive examinations. When the Lucknow University admission process started early in April, the state university had declared submitting of Aadhar or at least its enrolment number as one of the mandatory requirements.

HC asks JNU prof not to take charge of hostels housing women

The Delhi High Court today directed a JNU professor, accused of sexually harassing women students, should not take charge as warden of any hostel in the university campus which houses women. While also directing the professor not to interact with the students, the court also questioned the varsity over the absence of women members in a fact-finding committee, set up by it to probe his alleged misconduct. It passed the direction after it was informed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) counsel that Prof Atul Kumar Johri had resigned from administrative work and was no more the warden of any hostel or member of any committee. The court said the university will consider the advisability of sending Johri on leave and this decision can be taken by the varsity after the fact-finding committee, set up by JNU, gives its findings. "In my view, it is also in the interest of the professor to reduce the chance of interaction with the complainants or potentional witnesses," Justice Rajiv ...

Asserting that Muhammad Ali Jinnah is not a role model for Indian Muslims, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today said he was confident that the patriotic Aligarh Muslim University administration and the students there would resolve the row over the Pakistan founder's portrait with a "sensitive approach". Minority Affairs Minister Naqvi also said things have changed in India after 1938, when Jinnah was accorded life membership of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students' union. He said the issue should be resolved keeping public sentiments in mind. Jinnah is neither an icon of India nor the ideal (role model) of Indian Muslims. The AMU administration and students there are patriotic and there is no question of raising questions over their patriotism, Naqvi said. I am very much confident that the issue will be resolved with a sensitive approach, he said. The minister also pitched for not letting the controversy escalate further.
