Won't shut till confusion around closure order cleared: J-K coaching centres

A day after the Jammu and Kashmir government ordered closure of coaching centres here in the wake of widespread student protests demanding justice for Kathua rape-and-murder victim, the private tuition institutes' body said they would not shut till "confusion" surrounding the decision is cleared. "The coaching centres will remain open from tomorrow as we have received no official communication ordering us to close such institutions, G N Var of Coaching Centres' Association of Kashmir (CCAK) said. States like Bihar, UP keeping India backward: NITI Aayog CEO

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant today said that the states in India's southern and western region were growing rapidly, but those like Bihar, UP and Chattisgarh were keeping the country backward. Speaking at the first Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Memorial Lecture at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Kant said, "Eastern part of India particularly states like Bihar, UP, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan is keeping India backward especially on social indicators. While we have have improved on ease of doing business, we have remained backward on human development index. We are still 131 out of 188 countries in HDI." One crore students to get subsidised wheat, rice in hostels

The Central Government on Monday announced that they will provide 15 kg of wheat and rice per month to students in all hostels including at least two-third of students from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.The decision was announced by Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan stating that the government will provide grains at Below Poverty Line (BPL) rate which is Rs. 4.15 per kg for wheat and Rs 5.65 per kg for rice."In all other hostels, be it government or private, where two-third students are from SC, ST, OBC and OBC among minorities, 15 kg of wheat or rice will be provided per student per month at BPL rates," Paswan told reporters here.Paswan further noted that in such hostels, even students belonging to the general category would get subsidised grains."The Centre will bear the entire cost of the scheme. Class 12 PSEB result: Girls outshine boys in Punjab

Girls outshone boys in the class 12 Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) exam, the result of which was declared today, with overall pass percentage being recorded at 65.97 per cent, marginally up from 62.36 per cent last year. A total of 3,00,417 students had appeared in the class 12 exams this year. Pooja Joshi, a student of Teja Singh Suttantar Memorial School in Ludhiana, topped the state by scoring 98 per cent marks, while the second position was bagged by Vivek Rajput of the same school with 97.55 per cent. Jasnur Kaur, a student of Dashmesh Public Girls Senior Secondary school, stood third in the state with 97.33 per cent. Muktsar district recorded the highest pass percentage of 79.64, followed by Mansa at 78.59 per cent and Ludhiana at 78.56 per cent, officials said. Classes resume in Jammu University after month-long agitation by students

Classes today resumed in Jammu University after remaining suspended for the last one month owing to an agitation by students in support of their various demands. "We are happy to call off our month-long strike as majority of our demands have been met," student leader Abinandan Sharma told reporters at the varsity complex here. Connecticut university closes because of student illness

A Connecticut university is shutting down for the day after about 100 students fell ill. John Clark, the president of Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, says he consulted with state, local and university health officials before deciding to close the school for today. He says the decision was made "to protect our university community from infection and spread of the disease." Crews will work to sanitize and disinfect the school. About 100 students have come down with stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. The school is recommending that students go home, if possible, and if they fall ill, stay in their room to prevent the spread of the disease. The university has about 5,700 students on two campuses in the city.

One crore students in hostels to get subsidised wheat/rice: Paswan

The government will provide 15 kg of wheat and rice per month to an estimated 1 crore students in all hostels with at least two-third of students from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes -- a scheme that could cost the exchequer up to Rs 4,000 crore annually. The move comes at a time when different political parties are trying to reach out to dalits and other backward classes ahead of assembly election in some states, and the general election which is due next year. Announcing this decision, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said the government will provide grains at BPL rate which is Rs 4.15 per kg for wheat and Rs 5.65 per kg for rice. Govt's move to promote TGTs as lecturers, PGTs challenged

An AAP government's decision, granting "ad hoc" promotions to 2,738 regular teachers as lecturers to teach students of different subjects and age groups without having any training for the new job, has been challenged before the Delhi High Court. The AAP government decision has been challenged by two school students, who have contended that the school children are being used as guinea pigs to provide benefits to the teachers. The plea came up before Justice Sunil Gaur who listed it for hearing on May 10 subject to the removal of technical objections to the petition raised by the high court's registry. The students' plea said the April 11 promotion order, if implemented, would result in "displacing and transplanting the existing batch of teachers to a new situation involving students of different age groups and different subjects to which they were neither ever exposed to nor trained to handle." External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today asked Indians and Chinese to learn each other's languages as it will help them overcome the communication barriers, which could further strengthen relations between the two neighbours. Yoga diploma holders to get preference in Physiotherapy degree courses

Diploma holders in yoga will get a preference in admission to degree courses in physiotherapy, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided. The decision has been taken following recommendation of an expert committee which suggested that those with expertise in Yoga be given preference in admission, subject to the condition that marks secured in the entrance examination and other eligibility conditions are similar to a candidate with same credentials sans Yoga expertise. The recommendations have been approved by the HRD Ministry. J-K coaching centres to remains shut for next three months

In wake of the continuous protest in the Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has decided to shut the coaching centres for next three months.Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Altaf Bukhari, while talking to the media, said that the state government is focusing on providing proper schooling.He said, it was found that the coaching centres operating in the valley were major distractions for the students and efforts are being made to keep a check on the same."We were looking at distractions and one of the distractions we found was coaching centres. We will pass an official order for coaching centres to shut their shops for a while. We will review this is in 90 days," Bukhari said.He also met the principals of Higher Secondary Schools in Srinagar to control the protest in schools here.
