Will work towards betterment of education system in Punjab: O P Soni

Newly inducted Punjab Minister O P Soni here today said that he will work towards betterment of education system, which acts as a spinal cord of the state as well as the nation. Releasing his vision for 2018 "Realities and the Reforms", the School Education Minister said that the biggest challenge in the state is the infrastructure development for elementary, higher and secondary education especially in the border and rural areas. He said that filling of the vacant posts and balancing of the staff falls next. However,providing nutrition and books to students would begin along with the first stage, he added. Bringing modernisation in education system would come after the state schools would have been upgraded in infrastructure to the tune of Model Schools of Chandigarh, the newly inducted Cabinet Minister said.

Noida govt schools perform better than aided schools: Survey

The average performance of students in government schools in Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh was better than those in aided schools last year, a National Council of Educational Research And Training survey has found. The NCERT survey found that the average performance of students in government and aided schools in environment studies subject in Class 3 was 65.59 per cent and 65.53 per cent respectively. For the same subject in Class 5, government school students outperformed aided school students by a margin of 25 per cent, it said. In language subject, the average performance of government school students for Class 3, 5 and 8 were 69.78 per cent, 68.21 per cent and 57.84 per cent respectively. The performance of students in aided schools for the same classes were 63.14 per cent, 50.94 per cent and 54.17 per cent. Suhas Pednekar appointed new Vice Chancellor of Mumbai varsity

Principal of the city-based Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Suhas Raghunath Pednekar, was today appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, who is Chancellor of all public universities in the state, made the appointment. The governor handed over the letter of appointment to Dr Pednekar at Raj Bhavan here today. Pednekar, a professor of chemistry, has been appointed as the VC for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier, a Raj Bhavan statement issued here said. He succeeds Sanjay Deshmukh, who was removed from the post of VC of the university on October 24 last year. Devanand Shinde, vice chancellor of Shivaji University in Kolhapur, was holding the additional charge of the post of vice chancellor since then. The governor had constituted a search committee under the chairmanship of Dr K Kasturirangan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) .

Prof Johri's presence on campus threatening, JNU students say in police complaint

Accusing the JNU administration of shielding a professor facing sexual harassment charges, a group of university students have filed a police complaint, saying they are "threatened" with his presence on the campus. The students have also sought protection from the police in their complaint against JNU professor Atul Kumar Johri. "We, the students of School of Life Sciences, are feeling threatened. The presence of the accused in the premises is making it a distressing environment. He is coming to school premises daily for past three days," they said in the complaint filed at Vasant Kunj Police Station last night. A police official said they have received the complaint but no FIR has been registered yet. "We are looking into the issue." Teacher booked for molesting Class 6 student in HP

The Shimla Police today booked a school teacher for allegedly molesting a minor girl, studying in Class 6, following a complaint lodged by the victim. In her complaint, the victim, student of a government school here, alleged that the accused teacher was molesting her for the past one-and-a-half years, police said. The matter came to light when the victim had heated exchanges with the teacher in the classroom which caused commotion, they said. As the news spread, the parents of the minor girl also reached the school and demanded strict action against the teacher, police said. The parents and teachers were engaged in verbal dual and the parents lodged their protest, following which the police reached the spot. Police have registered a case under Sections 354 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and arrested the accused. A departmental enquiry has also been initiated against the teacher, official sources said.

HC issues notice to TN education principal secretary

The Madras High court today issued notice to the state education principal secretary on a plea seeking filling of vacancies in government high schools and higher secondary schools in the State. A division bench of Justices C T selvam and Justice A M Basheer Ahamed ordered notice to the official on a PIL filed by Karuppiah. The petitioner submitted that 2405 teacher posts and 884 Head Master (HM) posts were lying vacant in Government high schools across the state. Similarly, 1657 teachers posts and 34 HM posts were vacant in higher secondary schools,and this would affect the quality of education in the schools, he said. The petitioner sought a direction to the government to fill the posts.

HC directs pvt dental college to refund fee to Iranian students

The Madras High Court today directed a private dental college near here to refund the full fees paid by Iranian students, whose admissions were cancelled as they were enrolled without the mandatory NEET qualification. Justice P N Prakash ordered the Asan Memorial Dental College and Hospital to handover all the demand drafts to the Consul General of Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammed Haghbin Ghoni, who appeared in the court to represent the case of the students. He also directed the Consul General, who is in touch with the families of the students, to ensure that the amount reached them. The judge then posted the matter to June 11. The court was hearing a petition by student Naseer Hamidavi Zegheiri, seeking vacation of stay on the FIR registered against the college on a complaint by him that it had not refunded the fees paid by him after his admission was cancelled. Maha signs MoU with British Council

The Maharashtra government today signed an MoU with the British Council to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation. The agreement was signed by Sumit Mullick, Chief Secretary, state government, and Alan Gemmell OBE, Director British Council India. "With this MoU, the British Council hopes to expand its existing work in the state, where in recent times, it has trained more than 100,000 teachers benefitting around five million learners," a release said. Yogi suspends officers in wake of Kushinagar accident

In wake of the bus-train collision accident in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday ordered immediate suspension of various officials.These include the Basic Education Officer and Block Education Officers of Kushinagar and Dudhi, Road Transport Officer and Passenger Tax Officer.Earlier in the day, a school bus and a train collided at an unmanned crossing, resulting in the death of 13 students while many were left injured.The school bus ferrying 20 children belonged to Divine Public School.It was later learned that the bus driver who had ear phones plugged in while driving the vehicle could not hear the sound of the train and hence failed to avoid the mishap.The Chief Minister also ordered to register an FIR against the principal of the school. Van-tanker collision: Drivers were challaned multiple times previously, says police

The driver of the school van that was hit by a milk tanker, resulting in the death of a 7-year-old girl in northwest Delhi today, had been challaned by the city traffic police eight times under various offences. According to the police, the man was driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol with headphones plugged in his ears, adding that the driver of the milk tanker was also challaned on 17 previous occasions. The police said the school van was also carrying children beyond capacity. A Delhi government officer said the van, a 2002 model private vehicle, was running illegally. Its driver, Vijay Kumar, did not fulfill the various norms required for driving school vans, he said. Kumar was also carrying a licence for driving private vehicles, the official said. According to the rules, vans used for carrying school children must be equipped with devices like Global Positioning System (GPS) and speed governors for the safety of children. A seven-year-old girl was killed and 17 other students were injured after a milk-tanker rammed into a private school van this morning near the Kanhaiya Nagar metro station in northwest Delhi, prompting the city government to order a magisterial probe into the incident. DU adds new features to online admission form for undergraduate courses

Delhi University announced today that it would add new features to its online form for 2018-19 admissions which would include providing a single portal for applications for both merit-based and entrance-based entry into undergraduate courses. The university has also announced a two-day pre-admission orientation programme starting tomorrow to educate students and parents about the new features. The university has facilitated automatic capturing of Class 12 marks scored by a CBSE student once he/she enters registration number and has also provided options to upload three best certificates for sports category students, instead of just one previously. Besides, five-year integrated journalism course has been added as a new course to the portal. Soon JNU may have 3-4 teachers per student: HC on varsity's norms for MPhil, PhD courses

The JNU may soon achieve the "unique" status of a university having 3-4 teachers for every student for the manner in which it has "tightened" the norms for admission to MPhil and PhD courses, the Delhi High Court observed today. Referring to Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) submission that it got 399 students for its MPhil and PhD courses last year when its faculty strength was over 500 teachers, a bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla said there were almost two teachers for every student and questioned the logic behind such intake. "You have tightened your norms, so the intake has dried up. At this rate, JNU is going to be a unique university where there would be three to four teachers for every one student. It is almost two teachers for one student now. What kind of logic is this? There is something wrong," the court said. NDMC to introduce student achievement tracking system in schools

The schools run by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will now have a Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) to track the academic and non-academic progress of the students. NDMC Chairman Naresh Kumar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PwC India Foundation today in this regard. "The objective of the system is to track each and every child in all the schools under the jurisdiction of the NDMC and create a database," Kumar said. "Besides monitoring the schools' resources and their performance, online capturing of attendance and exam results, scholarships and incentive disbursements, making the information available to the parents and students, the system will digitise the students' records for future references, eliminating the need for paper-based documentation," he added.
