Session starts, but govt schools in Gorakhpur yet to get books

Even after two weeks into the new academic session, books have not been made available in primary and secondary government schools in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur city.The unavailability of new books has also adversely affected the enthusiasm of children.Speaking to ANI, teacher Sarita Dubey said, "We have not received new books from the government. Hence, we have collected the books from the children of the previous session."The Government enforced NCERT books in all government schools this year. However, the students' education is getting delayed due to unavailability of the same.While Additional Secretary, Yogendra Nath Singh said, "Due to less tender, the publisher could not make the books on time. However, we are trying our best and soon the books will be made available for which a stall has also been set up in many schools.

CBSE to grant 2 marks for typo error in Class 10th English exam

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday announced that it will grant two extra marks to Class Xth students for a typing error in the English question paper.The CBSE made this announcement after several teachers and students approached the board to compensate for the error in the English paper held on March 12 in the comprehension passage section.There was a misprint or typo error in the third question of Passage 2 of Section A in CBSE Class 10th English examination.The Class X and XII board examinations began on March 5 and will conclude by April 25..

Power cut at Dr. Kalam's alma mater in Rameswaram

Electricity connection at former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's alma mater 'Mandapam Panchayat union middle school' in Rameswaram has been cut off by electricity board after the school management failed to pay the electricity bill for two years.The village education committee, however, told ANI that they stopped paying the electricity bill after the Tamil Nadu government took up the responsibility.''Earlier we used to pay the bill but stopped doing that after state government took up responsibility for it. Now pending bills are more than Rs 10,000. Madras HC orders Rs 25 lakh compensation to student who lost eyesight

The Madras High Court today ordered Rs 25 lakh compensation to a boy who lost his eyesight when a classmate threw a stone at him in the school, holding that the authorities had the duty to look after children in schools. Rejecting the private school's argument that fights among students in the class was a thing beyond its control, the court said it was the duty of the authorities to take care of children after parents leave them in school. Passing orders on a petition filed by the boy's mother, K Ranjees Mary, Justice M V Muralidharan said but for the negligence in the discharge of duty, the boy would not have lost his eyesight. The student, R Remish Fedlin, of the school in Kanyakumari district, was injured in the eye when his classmate threw a stone at him during special class in May 2010. Headmaster arrested for molesting minor girl students

The headmaster of a primary school in Howrah district was arrested today for allegedly molesting several girl students of the school, police said. A large number of guardians gathered in front of the school in Jagatballabhpur police station area during the day and started a demonstration demanding the headmaster's arrest alleging that he molested a number of girl students. A police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Shanti Sen went there and tried to pacify the guardians. The guardians alleged that on April 13 the headmaster had molested a girl of class 4 by calling her to his chamber on the pretext of holding a special class, police said. They also alleged that he had also molested some other girl students of the school earlier. A police team then went to Chandul village and arrested the headmaster from his house. The son of the arrested headmaster said his father was framed as he has been framed very strict. Investigations are on, police said.

School where Kalam studied goes without electricity

The school where former President APJ Abdul Kalam began his education has gone without electricity for the past two days with supply being snapped owing to non-payment of consumption charges. Power supply to the Mandapam Panchayat Union Middle School (No.1) was disconnected by the electricity department as the local body had not paid bill dues for over two years, education department officials said today. The late 'Missile Man', a native of this island, had studied in the school, when it was an elementary school decades ago. Officials said the Panchayat Union had to pay arrears to the tune of Rs 10,500 per year which had accumulated for over two years and hence they were forced to disconnect supply. Panchayat Union officials said the dues would be settled immediately and electricity would restored by tomorrow. Peace in JNU, no agitation: HC told

The JNU today told the Delhi High Court that there was peace in the varsity as classes were going on smoothly and nobody was agitating, as of now, against a decision to make at least 75 per cent attendance a must for all the students. The university's submission came on a query posed by Justice Rekha Palli as to what was the status of protest by the students and teachers in the campus. "It's peace now after several months. Agitating block grant teachers put their strike on hold

Agitating block grant school and college teachers today put on hold their indefinite strike till July 15 following Odisha government's assurance to look into their demands. They also decided to join the Plus II answer paper evaluation duty. St Xavier's University to seek land for campus expansion

The St Xavier's University (SXU) would approach the West Bengal government seeking more land for expansion of its campus at New Town to start new disciplines, its vice-chancellor said today. The university would start a two-year residential MBA programme from the academic session starting August 2018 at its 17 acre New Town campus. "We will approach the chief minister for at least 10 acres of land opposite the existing campus or contagious to it for starting a law school and a sports management academy," SXU Vice-Chancellor Felix Raj told reporters. The university had already got the AICTE approval to start the MBA programme which would be offered with specialisations in finance, marketing, HR and systems and operations. The Jammu and Kashmir government today said those pelting stones in the name of the eight-year-old victim of Kathua rape and murder case were only hurting the image and interests of the state, as the trial in the case was on and accused were behind the bars. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu today blamed foreign rule in the past for the situation now where women do not get the respect which he felt Indian tradition gave them. Addressing the 30th convocation of Kurukshetra University, he said women form about 50 percent of the population, and must be respected. Indians called their country 'Bharat Mata', he said. CBSE to compensate class X students for typo error in English paper

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to provide compensation of two marks to Class X students for a typing error in the English question paper. Several teachers and students had approached the Board with the plea that the paper held on March 12 had certain errors in the comprehension passage section. Students had to read a passage and write synonyms for the words endurance, obstruction, and motivation. But the paragraphs they were supposed to look at were incorrectly marked, they had said in an online petition. "The typing error has been noticed and it has been Board's policy to not let students face any disadvantage. The marking scheme has been decided in interest of students and all those who appeared for the particular question will be awarded two marks," a senior CBSE official said. The Class X and XII board examinations began on March 5 and will conclude by April 25.

One-man panel begins probe into TN sex scandal

The panel set up to probe the sex scandal in Aruppukottai, where a woman college teacher allegedly prodded students to extend sexual favours to university officials, today launched an inquiry, while the assistant professor's lawyer claimed she faced threat in jail. Retired IAS officer R Santhanam, appointed by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to probe the alleged incident, interacted with the vice-chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University P P Chellathurai and registrar V Chinnaiah about the allegation against Nirmala Devi. Buses used by many private schools not in a good condition: HP CM

Buses used by many private schools are not in a good condition and reports from sub divisional magistrates across Himachal Pradesh have been sought in this regard, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said today. At least 27, including 23 children, were killed at Malkwal in Kangra district of HP when a school bus fell into 100-meter deep gorge on April 10. Asked by reporters here about what his government was doing to prevent fatal accidents, Thakur said a campaign to check fitness of vehicles had been launched. He further pointed out that the buses being used by many private schools were found to be not in good condition. "SDMs have been directed to submit a report soon in this regard," he said adding that the private schools had also been asked to follow the Supreme Court guidelines on transportation of students. Efforts are also being made to widen roads and remove accident-prone spots in the state, Thakur said.
