Govt launches 'Study in India' portal to woo foreign students

The government today launched a portal to project 160 premier universities and institutions of the country, including the IITs and IIMs, as ideal destination for higher education for foreign students. There are 15,000 seats for the 2018-19 academic session, with 55 per cent of these having fee waiver. The government aims at having two lakh international students studying in Indian institutions by 2023, the Union HRD Ministry said. Union Minister for External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, Minister of State for HRD Satyapal Singh and diplomats from 30 countries were present during the launch of the "Study in India" portal. "We observed that the number of students coming to India for higher studies had become stagnant and more students were going to countries like Singapore and Australia. "That is when we decided to make a single spot information gateway to attract more students, make our visa process hassle free and also offer fee waiver to students, said Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar .

'How can anybody do such heinous act against a living form of Mata', says Mehbooba on Kathua incident

Terming the Kathua rape-murder incident as "alarming", Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today expressed anguish that "a living form of the Mata" has been subjected to such "heinous" act in the land where girls are worshipped as a manifestation of Goddess Durga. Addressing the sixth convocation at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University here , the chief minister said the heinous act of the perpetrators "has shocked us as a society" and showed that the value system was facing a crisis. SC reserves order on plea challenging MCI rules on quota in PG courses

The Supreme Court today reserved its order on a batch of petitions challenging the Medical Council of India's regulations dealing with reservation to in-service candidates in admission to post-graduate medical courses in respect of 50 per cent seats allocated to states. Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Association and others have assailed two amended provisions of the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations which provide the criteria for granting quota or incentive marks to government doctors who serve in rural or remote areas, in admissions to PG courses. Regulation 9(IV) says the reservation of seats in medical colleges for respective categories in PG courses shall be as per applicable laws of the states and UTs and an all- India and state-wise merit list of the eligible candidates shall be prepared on the basis of marks obtained by them in National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). 'Fake' certificates: MMC summons 53 doctors for questioning

The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has summoned 53 doctors for questioning, amid the allegations that they procured fake passing certificates for the additional degree courses of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS), a top office-bearer of the MMC said today. The MMMC has already suspended 20 doctors from the same college, after their additional degree certificates were found to be fake, the office-bearer said. The council had found that the 20 doctors had procured passing certificates despite failing in the exams conducted by the CPS. "We have decided to dig further into the certificate controversy surrounding the College of Physicians and Surgeons, which offers PG diplomas and fellowships. 53 doctors have been summoned for questioning," Dr Shivkumar Utture, president of the MMC, told PTI. Over 17K students take part in sixth BSE International Financial Olympiad

Over 17,000 students from across India took part in the recently held sixth BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) International Finance Olympiad.The aim of the event, which was jointly organised by the Eduheal Foundation (EHF) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was to promote awareness about financial literacy and to discover the best young talent in finance.The Eduheal Foundation is an international NGO promoting education and health.Students participating in the Finance Olympiad were selected from over 600 schools for the national-level year-long competition. Gorakhpur University exams postponed after papers leaked online

Mathematics and Sociology examinations in Gorakhpur University were postponed on Tuesday after question papers were allegedly found to be circulating on WhatsApp.Gorakhpur University Public Relations Officer (PRO) Harsh Kumar Sinha said that a high power committee has been set up to investigate the matter."Mathematics and Sociology papers went viral and as a result, we postponed the examinations. TN Governor denies association with lecturer accused in sex scandal

MoU for Aeronautical Engineering College in Patiala

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today in the presence of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for the establishment of Punjab State Aeronautical Engineering College (PSAEC) in Patiala. The MoU, which has been signed between Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda and Punjab State Civil Aviation Council (PSCAC), Patiala, seeks to create synergies between the two for the creation of PSAEC as a Constituent College of the MRSPTU. The chief minister assured of total support for the initiative to develop the proposed institute as one of the leading aeronautical engineering colleges in the country. He said that this college adjacent to the Patiala Aviation Club would enable the students to secure sufficient practical knowledge and flying experience. UP univ cancels papers after leak

DDU Gorakhpur University today cancelled the exams in two subjects after their papers, one of which matched the original, surfaced on social media. The BA/BSc part one Mathematics and BA part two Sociology papers went viral on social media yesterday, a day before the exams were to be held. A committee formed under Pro Vice Chancellor S K Dixit found that the Mathematics paper was actually leaked while the Sociology paper available on social media didn't match the actual question paper. The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University Gorakhpur has informed police about the paper leak. It sent letters to district magistrates and superintendents of police of the concerned districts, drawing their attention to the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to "undermine" Delhi's education system, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said today after the Union Home Ministry cancelled the appointment of nine advisors. JNU introduces e-rickshaws on campus

Aiming to reduce vehicular pollution and ease commuting, Jawaharlal Nehru University today inaugurated e-rickshaws that will ply on three routes on the campus. A commuter will have to pay Rs 10 for each ride. A total of 10 e-rickshaws will be deployed from today to connect all residential areas, hostels and shopping complexes, library, academic buildings and all the exit gates, and will ply from 7.30am to 9.30 pm. "The service provider will be charging a low fare of Rs 10 per ride per person. To promote women entrepreneurship and gender-friendly ambience on the campus, in the coming months all vehicles will be driven by female drivers," the vice-chancellor said after flagging off the vehicles. Depending on the demand, more rickshaws may be deployed in the coming months, a university official said.

Centre releases Rs 30 crore for agri varsity in Meghalaya

The Centre has released funds close to Rs 30 crore for the Central Agriculture University (CAU) which is being set up in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed the Assembly today. The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) of the Ministry of Agriculture had in 2010 had selected a site at Kyrdemkulai in Ri-Bhoi district for the CAU and 30 per cent of the work has been completed, he said. Classes have also started at a temporary campus in Umiam, the chief minister said.
