March for Science Rally taken out in city

Scientists and academicians of Bengal today took part in the 'March for Science' rally here to promote scientific temper among people. The rally, which was taken out from Ramlila Maidan to Esplanade, also demanded allocation of at least 3 per cent of GDP to scientific and technological research and 10 per cent towards education among other issues, a statement of the organisers said. The Kolkata Organizing committee and an NGO, Breakthrough Science Society, were behind the city-leg of the rally. The second edition of the 'March for Science' rally was taken out in several other cities in the country during the day. Prof Soumitra Banerjee of IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research), Kolkata, Prof Naba Kumar Mandal eminent physicist were among those having taken part in the rally. "The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity," a statement from the organisers said.

Wankhede packed with 21,000 schoolchildren for IPL game

The Mumbai Indians versus Delhi Daredevils IPL game at the Wankhede Stadium today saw 21,000 students in attendance as part of the MI's "Education and Sports for All" initiative. The initiative, which started eight seasons ago, gets schoolchildren from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai to watch one match every year in this manner so that they can experience the thrills of a T20 game seated inside a stadium. "This year there are 21,000 children who have been brought together by nine NGOs. They have been brought to the stadium in over 400 buses run mostly by the BEST Undertaking. Food packets and water are provided to each child and they are tracked from the pick-up points till all of them are safely home after the return journey. The whole process will last till 1 or 2 am," said an MI spokesperson. This annual feature had started in a small way by bringing in 300-400 school children in 2010 and over the last two seasons had swelled to around 18,000.

UGC seeks info on CBCS implementation, curriculum revision

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked varsities whether they have implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and revised their curriculum accordingly. It has asked the universities to furnish the details by April 18. The commission had introduced the CBCS in 2015 to allow "seamless mobility" across higher education institutions and transfer of credit earned by students. "UGC had developed guidelines on CBCS and also the detailed syllabi in consultation with various stakeholders in as many as 109 undergraduate courses as a template which gives a broad framework of uniformity as well as in-built flexibility. All the universities were requested to adopt the CBCS and also revise the curriculum," a communication sent to universities read. "The HRD Ministry has desired to create a database regarding implementation of CBCS and curriculum revision in universities across the country. Hence, you are requested to furnish the details by April 18," it added.

8-year-old beaten up by teacher, admitted to ICU

An eight-year-old boy has been admitted to ICU in Pune hospital after allegedly being beaten up by his school teacher.The victim Rohan Janjire, who studies in Class II at Zila Parishad school in Pimplewadi was allegedly thrashed by his teacher Chandrakant Shinde for failing to solve the question in the mathematics paper.The incident happened on April 10. The family got to know about the incident after the child vomited at home and blood came out of his mouth."His situation is still serious and he is not able to eat anything. At present, he is survived by providing an artificial oxygen and is kept in ICU. He is not allowed to eat anything as the throat injury is very serious and he can not even speak unless he is recovered", Dr Murarji Ghadge told ANI.An FIR has been registered against the teacher at the Karjat police station.

U'khand HC permits pvt CBSE-affiliated schools to prescribe non-NCERT books

The Uttarakhand High Court today permitted CBSE-affiliated schools in the state to prescribe non-NCERT books if they deem fit but asked them to ensure that they are reasonably priced. In an interim order on a writ petition filed by private schools, publishers and others against the state government's decision making NCERT books mandatory in all CBSE schools, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said the schools may recommend and use books other than NCERT books if they deem fit. However, setting a precondition, the court said the books of private publications prescribed by such schools should not be exorbitantly priced. It also said the books must follow the CBSE syllabus. The court asked private CBSE schools to provide a list of non-NCERT books prescribed by them alongside their prices to the state government and the CBSE. Woman law student suspended on charge of trying to create

A first year woman student of the Government Law College here was today suspended for allegedly attempting to create communal divide by her remarks over the rape incidents in Unnao and Khatua. R Priya was suspended following complaints from fellow students that she had been trying to force them to speak against the government and also asking them to boycott classes over the rape incidents, a release from the college principal K Gopalakrishnan said. No longer participating in attendance issue protest: JNUSU to HC

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union today told the Delhi High Court that it is no longer participating in the protest on the issue of compulsory attendance. The JNUSU claimed that the "lockdown" was misrepresented to the court by a final year PhD student of the varsity, who alleged that he has not been able to attend classes since February due to the ongoing agitation by the students and teachers against the issue of compulsory attendance. Justice Rekha Palli listed the matter for hearing on May 16. Russian cosmonauts greet Kudankulam central school children

Two Russian cosmonauts have greeted students of a central school located at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu from the International Space Station, after receiving a letter from them. The cosmonauts, Oleg Artemyev and Anton Shkaplerov, addressed the students of Atomic Energy Central School, Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district on April 12, a release from Rosatom, a Russian firm involved in the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) said. A Delhi court today sent three men, arrested for allegedly conspiring to kill Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board Chairman Waseem Rizvi at the behest of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, to five days police custody. CBSE submits status report in Delhi HC over paper leak

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday submitted status report in Delhi High Court over Class 10 and 12 exam paper leak and various decisions taken by the Board after the incident.The question papers of class XII Economics and class X Mathematics exams held on March 26 and March 28 respectively, were leaked on Whatsapp.The re-examination of the Class XII Economics paper will be conducted on April 25. However, there will no re-test for Class 10 Maths paper.Till now more than 60 people have been questioned in the case, out of which 10 are tutors of coaching centres.

CU improves NIRF rankings by six notches

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has congratulated the Calcutta University for moving up on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking from 27 to 21. Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakraborty Basu said today the Banerjee has congratulated CU for having secured better NIRF ranking, created by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development.
