Three people from Una district of Himachal Pradesh have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 economics paper leak.The arrested accused have been identified as Rakesh Kumar (commerce lecturer), clerk Amit Sharma and class IV employee Ashok of DAV Una, who were deployed on examination duty at Jawahar Navodaya School Pekhuwala on March 26."Rakesh and Amit were arrested by the Delhi Police's crime branch from Una, Himachal Pradesh. Kerala Governor P Sathasivam today withheld assent to the Kerala Professional Colleges (Regularisation of Admission in Medical colleges) Bill 2018. The Governor withheld assent to the Bill under the provisions of Article 200 of the Constitution, Raj Bhavan sources said. The Governor also took into consideration the observations of the Supreme Court recently while ordering a stay on the Kerala Professional Colleges (Regularisaton of Admission in Medical Colleges) Ordinance 2017, the sources said. Article 200 empowers a Governor to either give or withold assent to a bill or reserve it for the consideration of the President. The bill which was adopted in the assembly on April 4 this year, seeks to regularize admissions made in two medical colleges in 2016-17. An official of the state's OBC Welfare department was nabbed today by Lokayukta police for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to release scholarship funds of students of a paramedical centre. Officials said that Vishal Shriwas, an assistant director in the OBC Welfare department, had demanded a bribe to release scholarship amount worth Rs 17 lakh to students of the Meenakshi Paramedical Study Centre. Deputy Superintendent of Police JP Varma said, "He sought the bribe through the Centre's computer operator Brajesh Bhargava. As per the plan, Shriwas was to arrive at a hotel to collect the money. But he sent Bhargava in his place and the complainant handed over Rs 1.40 lakh to Bhargava." Shriwas was caught from his uncle's residence at Barapatthar area here while collecting the bribe from Bhargava, the official said. A case had been registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigations were underway, he said.

Secondary school students in Maharashtra will now be educated on organ donation. A chapter on this issue has been incorporated in the new science book of Class 10 from the next academic year with an aim to create awareness about organ and cadaver donation. The chapter incorporates information related to organ donation, its importance and procedure, a government release said here today Information related to cadaver (whole body) donation also finds a mention in the chapter. This has been included to ensure children get knowledge on the issue, it said. Education Minister Vinod Tawde said imparting knowledge about organ donation to young children will help create awareness about the subject in the society. The chapter includes details about which organs can be donated and how they are useful to save people's lives. Details of how cadaver donation can help medical research is also mentioned, the release said. The new syllabus will be implemented from the coming academic year .
The Class 12 economics paper of CBSE was leaked on March 23 - three days before the exam date - in Himachal Pradesh's Una town and it was shared on at least 40 WhatsApp groups, Delhi Police said today after the arrest of three people in this connection. The three - Rakesh Kumar, Amit Sharma and Ashok Kumar - all from DAV Centenary Public School in Una, were arrested by the crime branch after lengthy investigation and questioning, R P Upadhayay, special commissioner (crime) of police, said. Rakesh Kumar had been teaching at the DAV school as a PGT economics teacher for eight years. He was the centre superintendent of Jawahar Navodaya Public School in Una, where the CBSE exams were being held. Amit Sharma and Ashok Kumar worked at the DAV school as clerk and peon respectively. On March 23, three days before the economics paper exam, Rakesh Kumar collected bundles of computer science paper, the exam for which was due that day, from the strong room of Union Bank in Una. A BJP delegation today submitted a memorandum to the Governor P Sathasivam urging him not to give assent to a bill to regularise admissions made in two medical colleges during 2016-17. The ruling CPI-M led LDF government passed the bill in the assembly with the support of the Congress headed UDF opposition. BJP MLA O Rajagopal, who headed the delegation, told reporters that they submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging him not to give assent to the bill as it was "aimed to help" the private managements that admitted students by "accepting bribe". "We have sympathy towards the students whose admission would be affected", he said. However, it was not possible to support this kind of irregular proceedings, he said. The Raj Bhavan today asserted that a "fair and transparent" process was followed in the selection of M K Surappa as vice-chancellor of the Anna University here. It also urged that there be no politics and "mud-slinging" over his appointment. The clarification came after Surappa's appointment by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit triggered a political row over the former's Kannada origin. Opposition parties, including the DMK, had questioned Surappa being chosen as the vice-chancellor of the premier technical varsity in the Tamil Nadu capital. The agitating students of the National Institute of Technology, Mizoram, called off their indefinite stir against poor quality of hostel food which they alleged had caused the death of a student, police said today. The students, who launched agitation on April 2, called off their stir yesterday after the police started enquiry into the death of the student, they said. A first year student Sevsharan Kumar, hailing from Bihar, was taken ill in the NIT hostel at Tanhril near Aizawl on March 26 and died in a Guwahati hospital on March 31, they said. The NIT students alleged that Kumar died after consuming rotten food served in hostel mess. The police took up the case and launched investigation into the cause of the death of Kumar and also whether the hostel warden provided poor quality food to the boarders, they said. The US Department of Justice has called for making public Harvard University's admissions data after a lawsuit against the Ivy League institution alleged that it discriminated against Asian-Americans students in its admissions process for years. A lawsuit was filed in November 2014 by anti-affirmative action group Students for Fair Admissions alleging that Harvard admissions practices discriminate against Asian-American applicants. In a filing yesterday in a Boston federal court, the Justice Department called on the court to make Harvard's documents public, saying the government has a substantial interest in the case. Students for Fair Admissions includes over a dozen students who claim they were rejected from Harvard because the it engages in "racial balancing" by capping the number of Asian-Americans it admits each year.
