NCC being offered as elective to focus on patriotism, moral obligations: HRD

The HRD Ministry today said the objective of implementation of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) as an elective subject is to focus on citizenship, patriotism and moral obligations of a person. It, however, ruled out any plan to make NCC training mandatory for students in all colleges. Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh said in response to a written question in Lok Sabha that the government does not propose to make NCC training mandatory for students in all colleges of the country. "However, the UGC has requested the vice chancellors of all universities to explore implementation of NCC as an elective subject in their respective curriculum," he said. "The objective is to focus on citizenship, patriotism and social and moral obligations of a person. It is also expected to enhance life and leadership skills of the cadets," he added. Singh also said the UGC provides financial support to autonomous colleges for introducing NCC as an elective subject with credit points.

Afghan official: 48 schoolgirls sickened, possible poisoning

An Afghan official says at least 48 schoolgirls have been sickened at a high school in southern Helmand province in what authorities suspect is a case of group poisoning. Dr Nisar Ahmad Barak says the girls were admitted today at his hospital in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, with headache and vomiting but that they are all now in stable condition and receiving treatment. He didn't have any other details and could not speculate on what type of poisoning may have been involved. Ahmad Bilal Haqbeen, deputy director at Helmand's education department, says the girls are all from 11th grade at the city's Central Girls School. He says an investigation is underway. Most of Helmand province is under the control of the Taliban who oppose girls' education.

When will class 10 maths re-examination be held: HC asks CBSE

The Delhi High Court today asked the Central Board of Secondary Education about its plans, if any, to re-conduct the class 10 Maths test the question papers for which had been leaked recently. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar sought information on possible re-examination for the class 10 Maths paper after CBSE said it was still ascertaining the extent of the leak before announcing the date for the fresh test. The court put the query to the secondary and higher secondary education regulator while issuing notices to the CBSE and the Centre seeking their stands on a plea for a court- monitored probe into the recent leaks of the Maths and Economics question papers of class 10 and 12, respectively. During the brief hearing, the bench asked the CBSE as to how could it wait till July to re-conduct the test and keep the students on "tenterhooks" till then. Approval to 6 central varsities for setting up yoga depts: HRD

The government has identified six central universities to start departments of yoga there, the HRD Ministry said today. Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh listed the six universities in response to a written question in Lok Sabha. The varsities are--Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Visva Bharati, Central University of Rajasthan, Central University of Kerala, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University and Manipur University. "The UGC has already conveyed the approval for starting the yoga department in these central universities," Singh said.

Delhi HC issues notice to CBSE regarding Class 10 exam

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), the Delhi Police, and Ministry of Human Resources and Development on a petition seeking Class 10 Math's paper be held earlier.The High Court also directed the Board to hold a court-monitored probe into the matter of CBSE question paper leaks.The court has fixed the next date of hearing as March 16.The Delhi High Court had earlier in the day agreed to hear a petition seeking direction for a court-monitored probe in the matter.The plea, filed by many individuals and parents, also demanded the CBSE consider mitigating/compensating by awarding liberal marks to all students in the re-examination.

HC seeks CBSE's stand on plea for court-monitored probe into paper leak case

The Delhi High Court today sought the stands of the CBSE and the Centre on a plea for court-monitored probe into the paper leak case. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to apprise it of the Board's plans to hold Maths re-test for the class 10. The court was hearing a plea for a court-monitored probe into the recent leaks of the Maths and Economics CBSE examination papers of class 10 and 12, respectively. The petition by NGO Social Jurist has sought that the class 10 Maths exam be held in April rather than July as proposed by the authorities. The petition filed by advocate Ashok Agarwal has also prayed for liberal marks to the students in the Maths and Economics re-examination.

CBSE's new leak-proof system delays exams at few centres

The CBSE exam started late at few centres in the national capital today as many of them expressed inability to follow the new system of printing encrypted question papers, e-mailed to them, at the school itself. The board officials, however, assured that the students would be given extra time to ensure the delay doesn't cause them any loss. "We received (encrypted) question papers at 10 AM from the bank as CBSE officials gave it late. Papers were distributed at 10.45 AM instead of 10.15 AM," the principal of an East Delhi school said on condition of anonymity. Another school in west Delhi started the board exam late as they received the paper at 10.30 am from bank. Following the leaks of Economics and Mathematics question papers, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had announced that the examination centres would henceforth receive an encrypted copy of the question papers on e-mail and they would need to download and print themselves. One of pop diva Rihanna's songs became an instrument to register protest at the hands of Howard University students, who stormed a building in the premises to call out authorities on the USD 1 million stolen from the school's financial aid. The students, who led a demonstration on March 29 in Washington DC, chose the singer's "B**ch Better Have My Money" for their cause, Billboard reported. Don't rely on 'hoax leaked CBSE papers' , report to CBSE: HRD

The HRD Ministry has advised students and parents not to rely on rumours and to report to the CBSE if they come across any "hoax leaked papers" floated on social media. "After the arrest of some miscreants and suspension of a CBSE official, all efforts are being made to ensure smooth conduct of CBSE exam today. CBSE Official suspended, 3 arrested in paper leak case

Amid a nationwide outrage over the CBSE paper leaks, the HRD ministry today suspended one board official and initiated a probe even as the Delhi Police's Crime Branch arrested three persons, including two teachers of a private school, for their alleged involvement in the leak of the Class 12 economics paper. Mounting pressure on the government, the Congress demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak out on the matter, even as the initial probe found that it was friendship, not money that prompted the two school teachers to leak the class XII exam paper to a tutor at a coaching centre. Paper leak: Tale of friendship gone awry

A desire to help their friend for a few thousand rupees led Rishabh and Rohit--the duo arrested in the CBSE paper leak case--commit the crime, a police official said today. According to police, Rishabh, Rohit and Tauqeer knew each other since the last five years. A CBSE official has been suspended over laxity in supervising an examination centre in connection with the paper leak case and a formal enquiry has been initiated in the matter, the HRD ministry said today. CBSE papers leak: Two teachers among three held, say police

Three persons, including two teachers of a private school at Bawana in outer Delhi, were arrested by the rime Branch for their suspected roles in leakage of the Class 12 CBSE Economics paper, the police said today. The accused have been identified as Rishabh, 29 and Rohit, 26, both teachers at a private school in Bawana, and Tauqeer, 26, a tutor at a private coaching centre there, they said. On the days of the examination, Tauqeer used to circulate leaked question papers about an hour before their beginning among his tuition students who would further circulate them among their friends. He used to get the leaked papers on WhatsApp from Rishabh, who is a Physics teacher and Rohit, who is a Mathematics teacher, at the same school.
