ISC begins with fewer delegates and no plenary session

Shifting of venue at the last minute has hit the Indian Science Congress (ISC) hard, organisers said, adding that fewer delegates will attend the science carnival starting here today and plenary sessions will not be held. As many as 12 nobel laureates, who had confirmed their participation in the ISC, have backed out due to change of dates from January to March. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the science carnival today. It will continue till March 20. The annual science carnival was to take place from January 3-7 this year at Osmania University in Hyderabad. However, the varsity later conveyed its inability to host the ISC due to tensions on the campus. FIR against JNU prof for molestation

A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against a professor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for allegedly sexually abusing the female students in class.The professor has been identified as Atul Johri, who teaches life science at the university.A group of nine students have been protesting against the professor for the past days in the campus.The FIR has been lodged on the basis of complaint from seven out of the nine protesting students in the national capital's Vasant Kunj North Police Station.Police have been investing the case under Section 354 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

A student in a government school in Ghaziabad was spotted carrying bricks to a construction site inside the school campus.One of the teachers said, "He is mentally challenged. We stop him from carrying bricks but he goes back to do the same."However, contradicting the teacher's claims, the student said that he was asked to bring the bricks by the labourers working in the school.

Kerala: Students injured as Holi celebration turns violent

The Holi celebrations in Farook College in Kerala's Calicut turned violent after few students were allegedly assaulted by the college staff members.The incident took place on Thursday evening when two students were rounded up and beaten by a group of faculties and staff members.According to reports, two students sustained injuries and were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College for further treatment.However, a faculty member also alleged being beaten up by the students.Earlier, the college management had denied permission to celebrate Holi on campus, citing security reasons.But after the exams, a group of students decided to celebrate the festival of colours, which is believed to have irked the management.A case has been registered in this regard and a probe is underway.

JNUTA condemns removal of chairpersons, deans opposing compulsory attendance

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JUNTA) today condemned the varsity administration's move to remove a number of centre chairpersons and deans who are opposed to implementing the compulsory attendance system. Expressing "deep shock" over the move by the university administration, the teachers body has called for an emergency General Body Meeting tomorrow. "The JNUTA expresses deep shock at the string of post 9 pm communications replacing several centre chairpersons and deans of schools of the university and strongly condemns this act of the administration," JNUTA president Sonajharia Minz said. The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration had in January made minimum 75 per cent attendance compulsory for all students. However, if a student is absent on valid medical grounds then 60 per cent attendance will suffice. The Haryana Assembly today passed a Bill to set up Maharishi Balmiki Sanskrit University at Kaithal. Maharishi Balmiki Sanskrit University, Kaithal Bill, 2018 was unanimously passed by the House to establish and incorporate a teaching-cum-affiliating university at Kaithal to facilitate and promote higher education with special emphasis in Sanskrit literature, vedas, philosophy, Indian culture and Indic languages and also to achieve excellence in these and connected fields, an official said. Odisha varsity closed indefinitely fearing students' unrest

The Central University of Orissa (CUO) was today closed for an indefinite period due to apprehension of violence during an on-going agitation by students, Vice-Chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty said. Students were asked to vacate the university situated at Sunabeda in Koraput district, and police personnel were deployed at the campus to prevent any untoward incident. "As there was possibility of violence during the agitation, the university was closed sine die to avoid any untoward incident in the campus," Mohanty said. Science and technology can bolster change: Sonowal

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said thoughts motivated by science and technology have the potential to bolster change and urged students to adopt a progressive attitude to keep the pace of society in tandem with developed countries. "Development sans science and technology is not permanent. If the students need to go forward they need to take the help of science and technology as their launch pad," said Sonowal. JNU students allege sexual harassment by professor

A group of women students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) today levelled allegations of sexual harassment and financial irregularities against a professor of the School of Life Sciences (SLS). However, talking to PTI, the professor, a vocal supporter of the university administration's compulsory attendance initiative, claimed that he was being targeted for his stand on the issue. At a press meet held on the campus, the women students of the SLS issued a statement that said, "The professor often makes sexually-coloured remarks, open demands for sex and comments on the figure of almost every girl. If a girl objects, he holds a grudge against her." Another statement issued by the students said, "There is a financial nexus between the professor and the administration. 'Decision on Konkan varsity before start of new academic year'

Maharashtra government is "positive" on setting up an independent university for the Konkan region, education minister Vinod Tawde said today. "Keeping in mind students' interests, the government is positive on establishing a separate university for the Konkan region," Tawde told the Legislative Council here. "A decision will be taken before the beginning of the new (academic) year after holding discussions with public representatives from Konkan," Tawde said. Raising the issue, Niranjan Davkhare of NCP said the Mumbai University has 800 colleges under its jurisdiction, and the number of colleges is increasing every year, increasing the administrative burden. The varsity becomes difficult to access for colleges in Konkan, especially in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, he said. "Therefore it is necessary to have a separate university for 45 colleges in Ratnagiri,38 in Sindhudurg and 20 in Raigad," Davkhare said. Students and parents from the three districts as well as .

No proposal to extend ambit of RTE Act: HRD

The Centre today ruled out any proposal for extending the ambit of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 from nursery to secondary level. Minister of State for HRD, Satya Pal Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha that the government has merged three centrally sponsored schemes to serve the purpose. "There is no proposal for extending the ambit of RTE Act, 2009 at present. However, in pursuance of the announcement in the budget this year, i.e. to treat school and education holistically without segmentation from pre-nursery to class 12, the education department has prepared an Integrated Scheme on School Education," he said. The scheme has been prepared by subsuming the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Teacher Education (TE), the minister added.
