Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama will address the first convocation of the Central University of Jammu (CUJ) on Sunday, a university official said today. Union minister Jitendra Singh and former chief of Army staff N C Vij will also attend the ceremony on March 18. They would receive degrees of doctor of philosophy, honoris causa, from the university. A group of students of SRM Institute of Science and Technology here have launched an initiative to provide low cost sanitary napkins for economically poor girls by raising funds. The students using the crowd-funding route are raising funds for the initiative through "www.fueladream.com", a release from the portal said today. The initiative was aimed at creating awareness on menstrual hygiene and the usage of sanitary napkins by generating Rs 7.5 lakh a year, it said. "It is a simple and high impact initiative and the need of the hour. Supplying pads for a year will definitely ensure awareness and change in behaviour for the girls and women", FuelADream, Founder, Ranganath Thota said. The chief seretaries of Mizoram and Assam would hold talks in Delhi on March 20 on the border dispute between the two neighbouring states in the wake of protests by students, which turned violent recently. Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana Lalzirliana informed the Assembly that the Mizoram government had suggested that the deputy commissioners of Hailakandi district in Assam and Kolasib district in Mizoram should hold talks on the border dispute before March 15, but did not receive any response. "We again suggested talks between the chief secretaries of the two states and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh agreed to it by proposing talks between the chief secretaries of Assam and Mizoram on March 20," he said. Police say a teacher in California accidentally fired his gun in a classroom, injuring three students. It happened Tuesday at Seaside High School as Dennis Alexander was teaching a gun safety lesson for his administration of justice class. Police say Alexander, who also serves as a reserve police officer, was pointing the gun at the ceiling to make sure it was not loaded when the weapon discharged. Three students were injured by debris, including a 17-year-old whose father told KSBW-TV his son sustained moderate injuries when bullet fragments lodged in his neck. Alexander was placed on administrative leave from his teaching job and he was also placed on administrative leave at the Sand City Police Department.

Almost 26,500 students committed suicide in the country between 2014 and 2016, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said 9,474 students took their lives in 2016, 8,934 students in 2015 and 8,068 in 2014. In 2016, the highest number of student suicides (1,350) took place in Maharashtra, followed by West Bengal (1,147), Tamil Nadu (981) and Madhya Pradesh (838), Ahir said replying to a written question. Maharashtra witnessed 1,230 such suicides in 2015, and Tamil Nadu, 955. In the same year, 730 students took their lives in Chhattisgarh and 676 in West Bengal, he said.
The office bearers of the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) have told the Delhi High Court that they have not violated its order on holding protests in the varsity as they did not block access to the administrative block. The boycott of classes and sit-in demonstration by the students of the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya entered the third day today protesting against the rejection of their committee for organising a social function by the vice-chancellor. The students have formed a committee consisting of 42 students for organising the annual social function, but the VC rejected it, said an agitating student of the university does not have any students' union at Mohanpur in Nadia district. "The VC wants to make a committee consisting of students of his choice and we do not agree with it", he said. The Allahabad High Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh government, the CBSE and a Ghaziabad-based private school to file counter affidavits in a petition alleging commercialisation of education. The court also issued notice to DPS, Ghaziabad, Vasundhara and asked it to file it's counter affidavit in the case. The bench comprising Chief Justice D B Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar passed the above order in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Ghaziabad Parents Association through its member Neeraj Bhatnagar. In the petition it was alleged that DPS, Ghaziabad, Vasundhara, in last three years, raised tuition fees each year though the CBSE rules prohibit fees hike each year. Renu Khator, a top Indian-American woman academic, has been awarded by American Council in Education for her role in mentoring professionals. Khator, 62, Chancellor of University of Houston System and President of University of Houston (UH), awarded the 2018 Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award during the opening plenary of American Council in Education's 100th annual meeting. The award is bestowed annually to acknowledge the substantial role of mentors in the success of the council's fellows program participants. Khator, who was born in Uttar Pradesh and educated at the University of Kanpur, is the UH System's first woman chancellor, UH's first foreign-born president, and the first ever Indian immigrant to lead a comprehensive research university in the US. Veteran BJP leader Babual Gaur today embarrassed the Madhya Pradesh government in the Legislative Assembly, saying education is in a shambles in the BJP-ruled state. Gaur, a former chief minister, blamed deployment of teachers for non-educational tasks for the "poor" condition of education. The Delhi High Court today asked the authorities to explain the measures taken by them to create awareness about menstrual hygiene among school students. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the Centre, Delhi government and the local civic bodies to file status reports on the working of the menstrual hygiene scheme for schools, budgetary allocation for Delhi and the manner in which such products are disbursed. It also asked the governments and civic bodies here the status of publicising awareness schemes and their effective implementation in schools.
