EC to test remote voting machine's prototype with domestic migrant voters

In a major move to increase voter participation, the Election Commission on Thursday said it has developed a prototype of a remote electronic voting machine (RVM) for domestic migrant voters and has invited political parties for a demonstration on January 16. If implemented after stakeholder consultations, migrant voters do not need to travel to their home district to exercise their franchise. Based on feedback from various stakeholders and the demonstration of the prototype, the Election Commission (EC) will appropriately carry forward the process of implementing remote voting, according to a statement. The poll panel has also floated a concept note on remote voting and sought the views of political parties on the legal, administrative and technical challenges in implementing it. Himachal Assembly polls: BJP, Congress both claim to win over 40 seats

Two days ahead of the counting of votes for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, both BJP and Congress on Tuesday claimed that they will get more than 40 seats of the total 68. Himachal Pradesh BJP president Suresh Kashyap said heavy voting by the women electorate and the overall 76.61 per cent polling in the assembly elections was an indication that the saffron party would again form the government in the state. The Election Commission on Thursday rapped SSPs of Etawah and Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh and sought explanations for them for failing to follow its transfer and posting policy ahead of the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll. A select group of Indian Americans invited for the potential presidential race announcement have reached Mar-a-Lago, to be part of what they view as an important marker in national politics. 2,021 candidates file paper for MCD polls, includes 507 Independents

A total of 2,021 candidates have filed their nomination papers with the poll authorities for the upcoming civic elections in Delhi, sources said on Tuesday. The 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) goes to polls on December 4 while the results will be declared on December 7. Of the total nominations, Independent candidates have the maximum share with 507 candidates, followed by AAP with 492 candidates. On Monday, the last day to file nominations, all candidates from the three major parties -- the AAP, BJP and the Congress -- and nominees from other parties and many Independents submitted their papers. The tabulation of data from nominations filed went on till the early hours, the sources said. The poll authorities have received 2,585 nominations from 2,021 candidates, a source said.
