LS polls 2024: PM Modi set for third term as Opposition makes big gains

The BJP-led NDA was ahead with leads in 296 seats and the opposition INDIA bloc not far behind in 227 seats as votes were counted for the Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, setting the course for a third consecutive term as prime minister for Narendra Modi but with a stronger opposition. While the BJP was ahead in 236 of 542 seats, the Congress had leads in 97, signalling a dip for the ruling party from the 303 score in 2019 and a spike for the opposition party's 52 from the last election. An election marked by acridity and acrimony could end with the treasury benches in reduced numbers and an opposition with more teeth. LS polls 2024: BJP ahead in 24 seats in Gujarat, Congress leads in 1

The BJP was leading in 22 and the Congress in three Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat as per early trends, an election official said on Tuesday. Counting of votes for the single-phase elections in 25 seats held on May 7 began at 8 am on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party was leading on 22 and Congress on three seats, the Election Commission of India (ECI) data showed. BJP leader Amit Shah is ahead on Gandhinagar seat, while Mansukh Mandaviya is leading from Porbandar. Congress candidate geniben Thakor was ahead on Banaskantha seat, leaving behind her BJP rival Rekha Chaudhary. In Sabarkantha, Congress candidate and tribal leader Tushar Chaudhary was leading in early trends. In the Vadodara seat, BJP's Hemang Joshi was ahead. The BJP candidates were ahead in Ahmedabad (East), Panchmahal, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Bardoli, Valsad, Bhavnagar, Porbandar and Bharuch.

Election results 2024: Counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls begins

Counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections began on Tuesday morning across states and Union Territories. While the Lok Sabha has 543 members, counting is being held for 542 seats after the BJP's Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed. Counting of votes is also underway for the assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, where polling was held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections. Elections to the assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim were also held alongside the Lok Sabha polls. The results of these elections were declared on June 2. According to the Conduct of Election Rules, postal ballots will be counted first and the process of counting of votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs) will begin 30 minutes later. Several EVMs changed after polling in Rajnandgaon LS seat, says Baghel

Senior Congress leader and Chhattisgarh's former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday alleged that several Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and VVPAT units were changed after polling in the Rajnandgaon Lok Sabha seat, from where he contested the elections. Baghel claimed the numbers of several EVMs used in the April 26 voting in Rajnandgaon provided by the Election Commission of India (ECI) does not match with details of machines of the booths concerned mentioned in Form 17 C. However, the returning officer of Rajnandgaon denied any irregularities or mismatch in numbers. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the veracity of exit polls on Monday and claimed the agencies conducting them were only trying to create a conducive atmosphere in favour of the BJP. Preparations completed for counting in 2 LS constituencies in Tripura: CEO

All preparations for counting for two Lok Sabha constituencies - Tripura West and Tripura East - and Ramnagar Assembly segment byelection have been completed, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Puneet Agarwal said on Monday. The counting will be held in 20 locations on June 4. The voting for Tripura West Lok Sabha seat and Ramnagar Assembly segment byelection was held on April 16 while polling for Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency was conducted on April 26. An average of 81.48 per cent voting was recorded in Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency while Tripura East registered 80.36 per cent polling. "All the preparations for counting for two Parliamentary constituencies and Ramnagar Assembly segment (byelection) have been completed. The counting will commence in 20 locations of the state on June 4 at 8 am," the CEO told PTI. Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti on Monday said the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will win around 450 Lok Sabha seats, more than the numbers predicted by the exit polls.
