CM Kejriwal recommends LG to hold Delhi mayoral election on Feb 22

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday recommended to Lt Governor V K Saxena that the mayoral election be held on February 22. This comes a day after the Supreme Court ordered issuance of a notice within 24 hours for convening the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to fix the date of election for mayor, deputy mayor and members of the Standing Committee. In a shot in the arm for the ruling AAP, the apex court on Friday also held that members nominated by the LG to the MCD cannot vote to elect the mayor. "Recommended MCD Mayor elections to be held on 22 Feb," Kejriwal said in a tweet. According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957, the mayor and the deputy mayor are to be elected in the very first session of the House after the civic polls. However, it's been over two months since the municipal elections were held on December 4 and Delhi is yet to get a mayor. The MCD could not elect the mayor on three previous occasions amid tumult as

The mayoral election is the first item on the agenda for the municipal House slated to be held on February 6 in Delhi, sources said on Thursday. It will be followed by the election of the deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), they said. Lt Governor V K Saxena has approved convening of an MCD House to elect the mayor on February 6, Raj Niwas officials said on Wednesday. The date had been proposed by the Delhi government, an official has said. Assam BJP to improve its performance in 2024 LS polls, says Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the BJP will improve its performance in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections though he refused to predict the number of seats it is likely to win. The saffron party had bagged nine out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, its best show so far in the northeastern state. Briefing reporters after the party's state executive meeting here, Sarma said, The discussions here were not purely election-centric. But when a discussion is held about strengthening the organisation, the issue of election also comes in. To a question on the party's prospects in the next Lok Sabha polls, the chief minister said, The party will have its own assessment, I will have my own. It (the result) will be better than before. The Lok Sabha election winds haven't even blown yet. It is not good to proceed with a number in mind at this moment, he said when asked for his prediction on the number of seats the BJP will win in the state. Th

13 dead in Peru as anti-government protests seeking elections resume

At least 13 people died Monday in southeast Peru as protests seeking immediate elections resumed in neglected rural areas of the country still loyal to ousted President Pedro Castillo. Peru's top human rights agency called for an investigation into the deaths, 12 of which took place amid clashes between security forces and protesters attempting to seize control of an airport in the city of Juliaca, near the border with Bolivia. It was the highest death toll since the unrest began in early December following Castillo's removal and arrest following a widely condemned attempt to dissolve Congress and head off his own impeachment. Among the 12 killed in Juliaca was a 17-year old, according to news reports. A 13th person died in the nearby city of Chucuito, where protesters blocked a highway. Castillo's successor, his former running mate Dina Boluarte, has supported a plan to push up to 2024 elections for president and congress originally scheduled for 2026. She's also expressed support
