India's electricity consumption grows 14% to 112.81 billion units in Nov

India's power consumption logged a double-digit growth of 13.6 per cent to 112.81 billion units in November 2022 compared to the year-ago period, according to the government data. The robust growth of power consumption in the month mainly indicates an increase in economic activities as generally it remains subdued in November. Experts say power consumption and demand will further increase in the coming months due to use of heating appliances, especially in the northern part of the country, and further improvement in economic activities on account of the beginning of the new rabi crop season. Farmers use electricity to run tubewells for irrigation for new crops. In November last year, power consumption was 99.32 billion units (BU), higher than 96.88 BU in the same month of 2020, the data showed. The Power Ministry has launched a scheme for the procurement of aggregate electricity of 4,500 MW for five years under of the SHAKTI (Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India) policy. "Ministry of Power kicks off a scheme for procurement of aggregate power of 4500 MW on competitive basis for five years on Finance, Own and Operate (FOO) basis under B (v) of SHAKTI Policy," a power ministry release said. PFC Consulting Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PFC Ltd, has been designated as the nodal agency by the Ministry of Power. Under the scheme, the PFC Consulting Ltd has invited bids for the supply of 4,500 MW. The supply of electricity will commence from April 2023. The Ministry of Coal has been requested to allocate around 27 MTPA for this, it stated. Delhi govt extends last date to apply for power subsidy to November 15

The Delhi government has extended the last date to apply for power subsidy to November 15, officials said on Thursday. The last date to submit the applications, both online and offline, for subsidy on electricity provided by the government was originally set at October 31. Over 34 lakh of around 57 lakh consumers had applied for the subsidy by that date. The Delhi government has decided to provide subsidies to only those consumers who apply for concession. Consumers receive a full subsidy on electricity consumption up to 200 units a month. Those consuming up to 400 units receive a 50 per cent subsidy.

More than 40% consumers did not opt for power subsidy, says Delhi govt

More than 40 per cent of the 56.98 lakh domestic consumers did not opt for power subsidy provided by the Delhi government till the last date of application on October 31, officials said on Monday. While more than 34 lakh domestic consumers applied for power subsidy, those who could not opt for it will have another chance to do so in the billing cycle of next month, they said. A total of 22,81,900 (40 per cent) domestic consumers were yet to apply for the subsidy, officials said. Electricity supply restored in Bangladesh after blackout from grid failure

Electricity supply across Bangladesh has been restored after the South Asian country plunged into a blackout following the failure of its national power grid, officials said. The blackout, which impacted much of the country, started at 2.05 pm on Tuesday and lasted for nearly seven hours before power was completely restored at 9 p.m. It was not immediately clear what caused the glitch. Many large shopping malls in the capital, Dhaka, closed early on Tuesday evening. Power discoms seek clarification from Delhi govt on disbursal of subsidy

Power discoms have sought clarification from the Delhi government on the disbursal of subsidy to consumers considering their different billing cycles, sources said on Wednesday. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier this month said that subsidy will be given to only those consumers who will demand it. He said that consumers who apply for subsidy up to October 31 will be provided subsidy for the month of October. However, sources said that discoms do not follow month-wise billing cycles. "The billing of power consumption starts from the date a new connection is energised. So it is different for consumers. Supposedly, if a consumer starts consumption of power after getting connection from 25th of a month, his bill will be generated for a period up to 25th of next month," said a source. Sardar Sarovar dam's hydropower output nearly doubles this year

Good rainfall in the catchment area of the Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat's Narmada district has led to the generation of 2,142 million units (MUs) of hydropower so far this year, nearly double as compared to the corresponding period last year. The month of August has contributed the most to it, the official data has shown. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), both Gujarat and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh have received excess rainfall this monsoon season. Of the Narmada river's total basin area of 97,410 sq km, a total of 85,858 sq km area lies in Madhya Pradesh and 9,894 sq km in Gujarat. From the River Bed Power House (RBPH) turbines at the dam located in Kevadia, 2,142 MUs of electricity was produced till September 20 this year as compared to 1,129 MUs units till September end in 2021, the data shared by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) said. RBPH's installed capacity is 1,200 MW. Of the 2,142 MUs, a total of 1,849 MUs were generated in the monsoon .
