Committee in PLI scheme approves Rs 1,000 cr disbursement to beneficiaries

The Empowered committee in PLI (production-linked incentive) scheme has approved Rs 1,000 crore disbursement to beneficiary firms of the electronics sector, a top government official said. The government disbursed Rs 2,900 crore till March 2023, out of claims worth Rs 3,400 crore received under the scheme, which aims at boosting domestic manufacturing, creating jobs and supporting exports. "In the recent meeting of the committee, Rs 1,000 crore disbursements were approved under the PLI scheme for the electronics sector. Actual disbursement to the beneficiary companies would take a few more days," the official said. This would be the first disbursement of this fiscal. The scheme was announced in 2021, for 14 sectors including large-scale electronic manufacturing, white goods, textiles, manufacturing of medical devices, automobiles, specialty steel, food products, high-efficiency solar PV modules, advanced chemistry cell battery, drones and pharmaceuticals with an outlay of Rs 1.97 l

CDIL becomes first Indian firm to produce Silicon Carbide components

Electronic component maker CDIL has become the first company in India to start manufacturing Silicon carbide semiconductors for use in high power-consuming technology products. While speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the company's new surface mount semiconductor packaging line, CDIL Executive President and Chief Operating Officer Pankaj Gulati told PTI that the company has started exporting Silicon Carbide (SiC) components to China, the US, Europe and Australia. "We are the first company in India to have started manufacturing of Silicon Carbide semiconductors. We have started shipping them to China, US, Europe and Australia," Gulati said. CDIL operates manufacturing facilities and a reliability lab in Mohali and Delhi, serving industries with a focus on the automotive, defence, and aerospace sectors. iPhone maker Apple has plans to scale up production in India by over five-fold to around USD 40 billion (about 3.32 lakh crore) in the next 4-5 years, according to government sources. According to the official, who did not wish to be named, the company has crossed the USD 7 billion production mark in the last financial year. "Apple has plans to increase production in India to over USD 40 billion in the next 4-5 years. It has crossed USD 7 billion in the last fiscal," the official said. An email query sent to Apple did not elicit any reply. Apple manufacturers iPhones in India and has plans to start manufacturing Airpods from next year. The officer said that Apple has no immediate plans to make iPads or its laptops in India. "They don't have any plans to participate in IT hardware PLI. Govt rolls out mandatory quality norms for solder wires used in electronics

The government has issued mandatory quality norms for solder wires, used in electronics and engineering industry, to curb the import of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing of these goods. A notification in this regard was issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on September 18. Items under Flux Cored Solder Wire (Quality Control) Order, 2023 cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark. These orders will come into force with effect from six months from the date of publication of this notification, the DPIIT said on Tuesday. Circular electronics biz models can create $ 20 bn market by 2035: Study

Circular electronics business model, comprising product design to recycling, can create a total addressable market of up to USD 20 billion by 2035, a joint report by industry body ICEA and Accenture said on Monday. According to the report, fostering multi-brand repair services, defining refurbishment standards, and creating a product as-a-service framework can create 1.1 lakh high-quality formal sector green jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.6 million tonnes from smartphones and laptops by 2035. "A total of six circular business models, including circular design, repair, and resell, etc., can unlock an untapped revenue potential of USD 7 billion by 2035. The projected market size for these circular models is valued at USD 13 billion by 2035. Yet, the total addressable market, achievable through the public and private partnerships, increases it to USD 20 billion," the report said.
