IIT Guwahati discovers modified graphene oxide's potential in medicine

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed cost-effective experiments for modifying graphene oxide that can be used by other academic institutions to train personnel needed for cutting-edge projects in semiconductors, nanoelectronics, healthcare and quantum technologies. A team led by Rajiv K Kar, assistant professor, at the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology in IIT-Guwahati, have made these important discoveries regarding the use of modified graphene oxide for biomedical applications, a release said on Tuesday. Graphene is an exceptionally strong material and possesses outstanding electrical and thermal conductivity. Its oxidised form, called Graphene Oxide (GO), offers a large surface area and low cytotoxicity, making it suitable for medical applications. GO can be further engineered through defects, doping and functional modifications, which enhance its optical and electrical properties for improved biomedical ...

Green engineering need of hour, construct sustainable structure: Prez Murmu

"Green engineering" is the need of the hour, President Droupadi Murmu told officers of the Military Engineer Services (MES) on Friday as she asked them to construct eco-friendly and sustainable structures that promote the use of renewable energy. Addressing a group of MES probationers, who had called on the President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, Murmu said, "The role of an engineer is not just limited to calculations, designing and construction. It is much broader and includes connecting communities, realising the dreams, and shaping the future." "As young officers who have just entered the service, you must be well aware of the environmental challenges and issues of climate change. It is your duty to design and construct such structures which are eco-friendly, sustainable and promote the increased use of renewable energy," she said. Murmu pointed out that the field of engineering is ever-evolving, with new technologies and methods emerging at an astonishing pace. "You need to

Kota prep centers: No friendship, everyone competitor, say students

There are no friends but only competitors in the country's coaching capital popularly known as "Kota factory", say students and experts as the government struggles to keep a check on the spate of suicides among engineering and medical aspirants. Authorities say 20 students preparing for competitive exams in Kota have ended their lives so far in 2023 -- highest for any year. Last year, the figure was 15. Battling with packed schedules, cut-throat competition, constant pressure to do better, burden of parents' expectations and homesickness, students say they often find themselves alone with no one to talk to and share their feelings with. Experts warn that parents also see friendships as potential distractions for their wards and discourage them to make friends when they are here for coaching. "There is no concept of friendship here...there are only competitors. Every student sitting next to you is seen as an additional burden to fight with. Unlike schools and colleges, nobody shares

EEPC to focus on WANA region for enhancing engineering goods exports

Engineering Exports Promotion Council on Wednesday said it would focus on the West Asian and North African countries for enhancing exports to the WANA region. The EEPC, in a statement, said there is ample scope for increasing bilateral trade with the WANA countries, especially for engineering exports. The council is also holding an exhibition 'INDEE' at Jordan, which is India's fourth largest trading partner in the region. In 2022, India's engineering exports to Jordan stood at USD 136.4 million, which was 33 per cent higher than the target of USD 109 million for the period. Jordan is strategically located in the western Asian region, the statement said, quoting EEPC chairman Arun Kumar Garodia. He said India and Jordan share vibrant social, economic and business ties with expanding trade and investment flows between the two countries. According to him, Jordan has a free trade agreement with the US for which most products exported from the former to the latter attract zero custom
