Filmmakers like Farah Khan play by patriarchal rules to be successful: Aparna Sen

National award-winning filmmaker Aparna Sen today said that though there are several women in the field of direction now, some of them like Farah Khan have a distinct male gaze and play by "patriarchal rules" to become successful. Sen believes women directors are "confident enough in their own skin to critique their woman characters" but there are some who play by the rules. "...And then you have woman filmmakers who have a male gaze. They play according to the rules of the patriarchal system and make a success of it. For instance, Farah Khan, who makes predominantly mainstream films, has a distinct male gaze, except has a tongue firmly planted in her cheek while playing the macho game," she said while delivering the keynote address at the fourth edition of Gateway LitFest in south Mumbai. HC rejects plea alleging glorification of Sati in Padmaavat

The Delhi High Court today rejected a plea seeking penal action against the producers and the director of Bollywood movie 'Padmaavat' for alleged glorification of the practice of 'sati'. 'Sati' is an obsolete funeral custom where a widow immolates herself on her husband's pyre and the law prohibits it. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar dismissed the plea saying the petitioner should have approached the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) at an appropriate time. The high court also said in its detailed order that the Board has exercised its discretion carefully and not given a 'U' certificate for unrestricted viewing but granted 'U/A' certification. "As on date, the film stands released as well. The film stands released without any complaints and it is already in public domain. If the petitioner was having any complaint with regard to the issue raised in his writ petition, he should have made a complaint before the CBFC at an appropriate ...

Monroe, famous for playing "blonde bombshell" characters in comic capers, became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and continues to have an enduring impact in pop culture.
