Lakhimi Borooah, organiser of first chess competition in

Lakhimi Borooah, organiser of the first chess competition for children in Assam, died today at her Kharghuli residence in Guwahati. She was 82. Borooah had started the competition in 1988 under the PC Borooah Educational & Charitable Society, family sources said. The well known 'PC Borooah Chess Academy' which completed 25 years in 2013 was set up by Barooah. She was also associated with many social organisations such as Indian Women and Child Welfare, Guwahati District, Eastern India Recreation Club and others. She was the wife of a tea planter, Late Jayanta Kumar Borooah and the elder daughter-in-law of P C Borooah, the first singer from Assam to record Assamese song in gramophone record and actor in the first Assamese movie 'Joymoti'. She leaves behind two daughters.

Actor Soha Ali Khan today said she always believed in freedom of expression and was looking forward to the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Padmavati', now retitled 'Padmavat'. It was worrying that the atmosphere was changing in the country and one felt scared, Soha told reporters to a question on the sidelines of ninth edition of Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2018 here. "I am looking forward to the film's release. Changing name not enough, delete scenes: Athawale on

Union minister Ramdas Athawale today said Bollywood film "Padmavat" should not be allowed to release till the scenes which were "offensive" to the Rajput community were deleted from it. He added that he would meet Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Prasoon Joshi soon in this regard. "Changing the name of the controversial film, 'Padmavati' (to 'Padmavat'), is not enough. Till the objections of the Rajput community as regards the film are not cleared, it should not be released," the Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment said. Stating that while the name of the film was changed, the story and scenes were not, Athawale demanded that such scenes be deleted before the film was released. The Karni Sena, a Rajput group opposed to the film, had staged a protest outside the CBFC office here yesterday over the clearance given to the film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Filmmaker-music composer Vishal Bharadwaj today said his poems convey those emotions which he cannot express through his films. "Nude", a collection of Hindi poems composed by him was released last month. "One can't communicate many things in films the way he/she can do in poems," Bharadwaj said during a discussion at the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival. The "Maqbool" director said while he initially kept his writings private, he has now taken forward his love for poems by publishing the book. "I can't write poem in a language which is not my mother tongue. For me, certain words and their resonance can only be captured and communicated in Hindi," he added. Bhardwaj, whose father Ram Bhardwaj was a popular poet, said he is inspired by Mirza Ghalib. 'Aiyaary' to release on February 9

Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey's 'Aiyaary', which was due to release on 26 January, will hit the screens on February 9 now.The movie 'Aiyaary' revolves around the loyal and obedient officer, Major Jai Bakshi aka Sidharth Malhotra, who idolizes his mentor Colonel Abhay Singh aka Manoj Bajpayee. Neeraj Pandey's 'Aiyaary' to release on February 9

Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey's next directorial venture "Aiyaary" will hit the theatres on February 9. The film, featuring Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra in lead roles, was earlier scheduled to release on January 26. However, the makers decided to postpone the film's release by two weeks to avoid box office clash with Akshay Kumar's "Padman" and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmaavat". "Looks like you'll have to wait a couple of weeks longer to witness our 'Aiyaary'. Now in cinemas on February 9," tweeted Pandey.
