With multiple media platforms now available, nobody can seriously complain of their free speech being in danger, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said Friday, asserting that if the Emergency was ever to be reimposed it would collapse as technology does not permit press censorship. Addressing the gathering at the National Press Day celebrations here, Jaitley said the "greatest challenge" to the media in a free society is how does it retain its own credibility so that it continues to become a maker of public opinion. Media's credibility will be its own maker and if misused, it can also be its own breaker, he said. The Maharashtra Cyber Digital Crime Unit (MCDCU) has taken down 203 websites providing pirated content in the last one year, a top government official said Friday. The MCDCU, a wing of Cyber Police, was set up last October. The 'pirate websites' which it shut down were illegally providing films, TV shows, music, software, games and e-books among other things to 160 million users per month by violating content producers' copyright, said Brijesh Singh, Inspector General of Police (Cyber). The MCDCU is a first of its kind initiative in South Asia where entertainment industry and government are collaborating to protect intellectual property, Singh claimed. MCDCU sleuths found that some of the pirate websites contained malware or malicious software programs which steal personal details of users. The centuries-old idol of Goddess Tara has gone missing along with other valuables from the famous Shakti shrine Ugratara Temple in Jorpukhuri area here, police said Friday. The idol, made of 'astadhatu' (eight metals), was found missing when the priest opened the temple door on Friday morning. Other valuables including cash from the donation box was also looted, they said. The temple authorities informed the Latasil police station, which is located barely 200 metres away from the temple. According to the CCTV footage of the temple, four persons were seen looting and vandalising the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and taking away the idol.
