UGC recommends deemed university status for IIMC
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended the HRD Ministry to grant deemed university status to the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC). The institute, one of the prestigious journalism schools in the country which functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, offers diploma courses in journalism, advertising and public relations. The UGC had last year formed a four-member committee headed by BK Kuthiala, the vice-chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi University, Bhopal, to analyse the proposal by the IIMC. "Based on the committee's recommendation and inspection team's feedback the UGC has recommended that the ministry should issue a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the journalism school under the 'De Novo' category. The status will enable the institute to grant degrees instead of diplomas," a senior UGC official said. Nation becoming intolerant, says Kamal Haasan
Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan today said it would not be possible for him to produce a movie like "Hey Ram" at present as the whole nation, according to him, was becoming intolerant. Speaking to reporters here, Haasan said "Hey Ram", written, directed and produced by him in 2000, was a 'very strong movie,' which reflected his politics and ideologies. Asked if his new film 'Vishwaroopam 2' also reflected his politics and ideology, the Makkal Needhi Maiam leader said it was there in all his movies. "However, this (Vishwaroopam 2) was not aimed (at it) directly," he said. "If you want to see my political reflection, Hey Ram is the film. I don't think it will be possible to release that kind of movie today. That is a very strong movie," he said about the film that revolves around partition and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The Laurel and Hardy biopic 'Stan and Ollie' is all set to be premiered as the closing-night film for this year's BFI London Film Festival on October 21.Laurel and Hardy were a comedy duo in the early classical era of American cinema. Scripted by Jeff Pope, the film follows the pair on their triumphant farewell tour around Britain and Ireland, Deadline reported.Directed by 'Filth' director Jon S. Baird, the film features Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the iconic duo.The festival's artistic director, Tricia Tuttle, while speaking about the film said that the story explores the twilight years of the legendary performers who shared a beautiful lifelong friendship. George Harrison's guitar expected to fetch up to 400K pounds at auction
Legendary musician George Harrison's rare Maton Master Sound guitar, which he played at The Beatles' final Cavern gig, is expected to fetch between 300,000 pound and 400,000 pound at an auction. The instrument, which is being sold by a UK private collector, will be auctioned at Gardiner Houlgate in Corsham, Wiltshire, on September 12, reported BBC. "This guitar is something very special - a direct link to the early days of Beatlemania and those era-defining gigs at the Cavern Club. Just touching it makes your fingers tingle. We're expecting interest from right around the world. It's very rare for one of George Harrison's guitars to come up for auction.
