Javed Akhtar awarded Delhi govt's Hindi Sahitya Academy Samman

Eminent personalities from different fields, including Bollywood song writer Javed Akhtar, were presented the Delhi government's "Hindi Sahitya Academy Samman" by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today. Akhtar was awarded the 'Shalaka Samman' for his contribution to the world of films and poetry. Veteran theatre director M K Raina received the 'Shikar Samman'. Other recipients of the awards included cartoonist Abid Surti, journalists Shaji Jama and Abhisar Sharma.

Outside food in multiplexes: MNS warns of fresh protest

Claiming that multiplex owners are still preventing the people from carrying outside food inside the halls, the MNS today warned of fresh protests. The Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Sena (MNCS) today appealed to the multiplexes to comply with the state government's order allowing the people to carry outside eatables within two days or face protests. MNCS is the cinema wing of the Raj Thackeray-led party. In a statement issued here today, MNCS president Ameya Khopkar claimed that many theatres and multiplexes are not implementing the government order to this effect, which came into force from August 1. In the recently-concluded monsoon session of the state legislature, Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Ravindra Chavan had clarified that there is no ban on bringing outside eatables inside cinema halls and places like food courts under the Maharashtra Cinemas (Regulations) Rules 1966. Anthony Bourdain's 'Parts Unknown' to return for final season this autumn

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's show "Parts Unknown" is set to return for its twelfth and final season this autumn. The award-winning CNN original series was in production when the 61-year-old TV personality committed suicide in his hotel room while shooting in France in early June. According to LA Times, the seven-episode season does not have a premiere date yet . One episode had been shot before his death - a trip to Kenya with W Kamau Bell, host of CNN's United Shades of America - and will be the final episode with Bourdain as narrator. The remaining episodes will include travels to Manhattan's Lower East Side, the Big Ben area of Texas, the US-Mexico border, the Asturias region of Spain and Indonesia. Noted ghazal singer Umbayee passes away

Noted ghazal singer and composer from Kerala, Umbayee, passed away today at a private hospital at nearby Aluva, where he had been undergoing treatment for some ailments. He was 68. He is survived by his wife and three children, family sources said. The singer, who popularised ghazals among the common people in Kerala, had been undergoing treatment for some ailments for the last seven months. Umbayee, with his unique style of singing ghazals, had a huge fan following in the state. He had performed ghazals in many states in India and abroad, particularly in the Gulf countries. An expert in playing the tabla and harmonium, Umbayee became adept in Hindustani music during his stay in Mumbai, the sources said. I cry when my films don't work: Aamir Khan

He is often praised for his script sense but Aamir Khan says he has cried for the films that did not do well. The actor-director says he has a curious mind and his biggest fear is not failure but of not trying. "I want to go with my conviction while making a film and if there is a loss, I will mourn that also. I cry when my films don't work," the 53-year-old actor said on the sidelines of the second edition of Indian Scriptwriters Association. Aamir believes it is a coincidence that his films have been successful. "I often get the credit... It is a coincidence to a certain extent that my films have been successful. The fact is that the story is written by a writer and then has grown organically." He says filmmaking is a collaborative process and if any aspect -- be it the script, casting, location, sound design, editing or marketing -- fails, it will not work. For a film to be successful, it is important to hit the ball in the centre.

Don't charge acting fee, have share in profits: Aamir Khan

Superstars are often accused of charging exorbitant money for working in a movie but Aamir Khan says he has a different model. If the film fails, he gets nothing and if it is successful, he has a higher profit share. The actor said he has always ensured that his producers earn money as it helps secure his career and film choices. "I think the script is the foundation. I ensure that once I love the story and the film is in the making, people who are investing money should not face loss. Pa. Ranjith to make directorial debut in Bollywood with period drama

"Kaala" helmer Pa. Ranjith is all set to make his directorial debut in Bollywood with a period film. Producer duo Shareen Mantri Kedia and Kishor Arora of Namah Pictures, who had produced Majid Majidi's "Beyond The Clouds", will collaborate with Ranjith, a press release said. The film, based on a true story, will go on floors next year. "We at Namah Pictures are quite excited to collaborate with Pa.Ranjith for a film. We are looking forward to it," a spokesperson for Namah Pictures said. Ranjith also has other films like "Kabali", "Madras" and "Attakathi" to his credit.

Punjab Cultural Mission to promote state heritage

The Punjab Kala Parishad (PKP) today announced the formation of 'Punjab Cultural Mission', which will be tasked with promoting the rich heritage of the state. The Punjab Cultural Mission plan was finalised during a meeting presided over by Surjit Patar, chairman of PKP, said an official press release here. Noted singer Pammi Bai was made director of the mission. Punjab Cultural Mission will work at the village-level, connecting the youth with the rich cultural heritage of the state. The mission will comprise 14 members hailing from the fields of arts and culture. Apart from Surjit Patar, the mission members include secretary general of Punjab Kala Parishad Lakhwinder Singh Johal, noted choreographer Inderjit Singh, actor Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi and singer Sukhi Brar.

"Impractical Jokers" star James Murray is all set to visit India this November. The 42-year-old actor-producer says he is looking forward to his "first-ever visit" to the country, which has been on his 'To do list' for some time now. "I'm coming to India this November. It will be my first-ever visit. I'm really looking forward to it as I always wanted to come here. I'm really going to have a lot of fun. I am really excited," Murray told PTI in an telephonic interview from Florida. The improv comic says there are lots of special things he would like to do when he flies to India, which also includes throwing "a big party" for all his "Impractical Jokers" fans. "I will also release my book ('Awakened') in India," he added. Murray has co-written "Awakened" with Darren Wearmouth, which released in June. Aamir Khan initially rejected Lagaan's story

It is considered a game-changer in Hindi cinema and even went on to earn an Oscar nomination but Aamir Khan today revealed that he rejected the initial idea of "Lagaan" as he thought the story was "bizarre". SC paves way for release of Anil Kapoor-starrer 'Fanney Khan'

The Supreme Court today paved the way for the release of Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-starrer "Fanney Khan" by refusing to stay its scheduled screening on August 3. A bench of justices R F Nariman and Indu Malhotra refused to stay the release of the movie on a plea filed by its producer Vashu Bhagnani's Pooja Entertainment and Films Ltd which had alleged that he was cheated in respect of the film's distribution rights which were "surreptitiously" given to Super Cassettes (T- Series). The petitioner had claimed that the sole distribution rights for "Fanney Khan" was sold to him for a sum of Rs 10 crore, out of which he had already paid an amount of Rs 8.50 crore.
