"The Deputy CM directed the officers and engineers that even if they have to work day and night, they must complete the project before the stipulated date of completion," an official statement said. Repair work of the road bridge over Farakka Barrage across River Ganga will be taken up within a fortnight as it is not in a good condition, West Bengal Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday. The crucial road bridge over the 2240 metre-long barrage is on National Highway 34, which connects south Bengal and other southern parts of the country with the north-east. "Condition of the road bridge over the Farakka barrage is not good," Adhikari said. Repair work of the bridge will begin in the first week of October and will take approximately six months, he said. The Maharashtra government decided on Tuesday to extend the time for submission of caste validity certificates for contesting local body elections from the present six months to one year after filing of nomination. The objective was to ease the workload of the Caste Validity Committee, as it will get more time to process applications filed by candidates, an official in the chief minister's office said. The proposal was approved at a weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis here, he said. The 'Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships Act' will be amended for this purpose, he said. The cabinet on Tuesday also decided to set up Mahanet's Network Operation Centre at Navi Mumbai and Disaster Recovery Site at Nagpur. E-commerce giant Amazon India will end 2018 with more than 50 Fulfilment Centres in 13 states across the country with a combined storage space of close to 20 million cubic feet,a senior company executive said Tuesday. Amazon's largest Fulfilment Centre in Karnataka was opened near Attibele on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, close to Bengaluru Tuesday, with a view to enhancing customer experience ahead of the festive season. The centre is one of the five announced for 2018, company Vice President (Customer Fulfilment) Akhil Saxena told reporters. Saxena said the facility would hire 2,000 contractual positions over the next year. "There are several hundred people working outside the facility as delivery associates," he said. In a step towards becoming carbon neutral, country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) is looking to install solar panels over around 10,000 ATMs across the country in the next two years, a senior official said. Currently, nearly 1,200 of the bank's ATMs are running on solar power. "We are going to take this number to up to 10,000 ATMs in the next two years," the bank's chief financial officer, Prashant Kumar, told reporters Tuesday. The lender has installed rooftop solar panel on 150 of its building across the country and is in the process of identifying more such locations. "Our aim is that by next year, close to 250 buildings of the bank will be having solar panels," he said. The bank is also planning to replace all its vehicles with electric vehicles by 2030. Kumar further said that the bank has embarked on a journey to turn carbon neutral and aims to achieve it by 2030. Union minister Harsh Vardhan inaugurated a project on Tuesday under which a first-of-its-kind technology will be used to treat sewage from Delhi's Barapullah drain and generate biofuel from it. The Local Treatment of Urban Sewage Streams for Healthy Reuse (LOTUSHR) project at the Sun Dial Park in the national capital can convert 10 lakh litres of sewage into clean water and generate three tonnes of biofuel. "The biotechnology department has presented an example of how we can convert a drain into a profitable mine. It is at an experimental stage. We are taking water from the drain and cleaning it. The clean water can be used in our kitchen, garden, toilet, etc.," the minister for science and technology said. "We have set up a laboratory here. Now, we can scale it up to the extent we want.
