FM's 'khata khat' remark: Cong accuses her of overseeing peak unemployment

The Congress on Tuesday hit back at Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for questioning the finances behind the Congress' poll guarantees of providing Rs one lakh per annum to poor women and youth of the country and accused her of overseeing record unemployment and price rise. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said while Sitharaman considers the Congress guarantees benefitting 99 per cent population as "lofty" but not the Rs 16 lakh crore loan write off for the prime minister's "cronies" or a Rs 2 lakh crore corporate tax cut for 0.7% of the largest firms that went straight into his "friends'" pockets. He asserted that the schemes promised by the Congress will be properly executed by the INDIA bloc government starting next month. "It is typical of the Modi government to describe only those policies intended to benefit 99% of the population as 'revdi', while billions handed out to the PM's cronies are excluded from this category. "The good news is that these .

PSUs not in disarray, but thriving under Modi regime, says Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said PSUs have suffered under the Congress-led UPA government and previously neglected ones like, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), have seen a 'resurgence' under the Modi government. Rebutting allegations by the Congress party and its leader Rahul Gandhi that state-owned companies are in a disarray, Sitharaman said such claims are a textbook example of the pot calling the kettle black. In a post on X, the Minister said that under the Modi-government, public sector undertakings (PSUs) are thriving, benefiting significantly from the culture of professionalism infused in them along with increased operational freedom. PSUs have suffered under the Congress-led UPA government. PSUs that were previously neglected under the UPA government, such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, have seen a resurgence under the Modi government, she said. Govt adopted pro-poor approach in GST implementation: FM Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the government has adopted "a pro-poor approach" while implementing Goods and Services Tax, and despite lower taxes rates the revenues as a percentage of GDP have reached the pre-GST level. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sitharaman said without GST, states' revenue from subsumed taxes from FY 2018-19 to 2023-24 would have been Rs 37.5 lakh crore. With GST, states' actual revenue amounted to Rs 46.56 lakh crore. "Despite the GST rate being less than the prescribed Revenue Neutral Rate and COVID-19 affecting the revenues, GST collections (as a percentage of GDP) have now reached the levels they were before GST (both net and gross). "This demonstrates that the Centre & States, collectively, through better tax administration, are able to collect the same revenue with a lower burden on our taxpayers," she said. GST, which was rolled out on July 1, 2017, had subsumed 17 taxes and 13 cesses into a 5-tier structure, thereby ...

FinMin studying HC order on PSBs' look out circulars for wilful defaulters

The Finance Ministry is studying the recent Bombay High Court order banning public sector banks from seeking the issuance of look out circulars, or LOCs, against wilful defaulters, sources said. Quashing the powers granted by the Union government to public sector banks (PSBs) to act against wilful defaulters, the High Court said it is arbitrary and violative of a person's fundamental rights. The finance ministry is aware of the April 26 judgement and will make a detailed assessment of the order, sources said, adding that the next course of action will be decided after studying the order. A division bench of Justice Gautam Patel and Justice Madhav Jamdar had on April 23 held as unconstitutional the clause of an office memorandum issued by the central government empowering the Chairman, Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of public sector banks to seek issuance of LOCs against default borrowers or even persons who stood guarantee for such borrowers. Lot of people coming back to India to establish business: FM Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said reverse migration had started as a lot of people are coming back to establish business here. According to her, reverse migration has started in which a lot of people, who have a global footprint, are finding businesses, professions and careers to be built in India. "Ideally, India should be a country which is worth for our grandchildren to stay and live and lead their lives and contribute for the country rather than run away from here because opportunities, job satisfaction, career enhancement, are better there and not here," the FM said during an interactive meet on Economy and The Vision for 'Amrit Kaal-2047.' The event was organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Of India, Southern India Regional Council here in Bengaluru. Electoral bonds better than giving sacks of money to parties, says FM

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday targeted the Congress for dropping the restoration of the old pension scheme that it promised in many states from its Lok Sabha election manifesto, saying the party is an expert in misleading people for votes. The senior BJP leader also defended the electoral bond scheme, saying it was introduced through a law passed in Parliament and was a better system as the transfer of money was visible in accounts instead of the earlier practice when cash-filled "sacks" and "suitcases" were given to parties. "Whether the system is perfect is a different matter, but it is a better system than what was there earlier because money will be visible in the accounts on both sides," she said at a press conference here. Rejecting the opposition's criticism over rising prices, she said the Centre's record is clear as it has taken continuous steps to reduce inflation and efforts are being made to reduce it further. She hit out at the previous Ashok Geh

Cong leader Priyanka Gandhi slams govt over rising debt, inflation

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the BJP-led Centre on Saturday over its proposal to borrow more than Rs 14 lakh crore, asking why is the government "drowning the people in debt" when instead of relief being provided to them, the "burden of unemployment, inflation and economic crisis" is increasing. In her budget speech last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed to borrow Rs 14.13 lakh crore by issuing dated securities to meet a revenue shortfall in the next financial year starting April 1. In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said: "The finance ministry stated that the government is going to borrow more than Rs 14 lakh crore in the current financial year. Why?" In the 67 years since independence till 2014, the country's total debt was Rs 55 lakh crore, the Congress general secretary said while pointing out that in the last 10 years, the Narendra Modi government increased it to Rs 205 lakh crore. The Modi government has borrowed about Rs 150 lakh crore in the
