French border checks in force over Italy's migration policy

Lines formed Sunday at Italy's northern border crossings with France following Paris' decision to reinforce border controls over a diplomatic row with Italy about migration policy and humanitarian rescue ships that shows no end in sight. The Ventimiglia-Menton crossing along the picturesque Mediterranean coast has often been a flashpoint of the migrant debate, with makeshift camps giving shelter to migrants who try to cross into France after arriving in Italy. On Sunday morning, several dozen migrants were sleeping on mattresses under a highway overpass numbers that could swell as France cracks down on crossings. France announced this week it was sending 500 extra officers to beef up its frontiers with Italy, and announced serious passport controls, in retaliation for Italy's delays in helping humanitarian ships that rescue migrants in the Mediterranean. Police checked cars crossing the border Sunday, stopping migrants, and patrolled trains. After a weekslong-standoff, Italy allowe

Macron to pressure France's most climate-damaging industries to reduce GHGs

Just back from the U.N. climate summit in Egypt, French President Emmanuel Macron is to meet Tuesday with the heads of the country's most climate-damaging industries to pressure them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, amid growing competition from the U.S. and China. The meeting at the Elysee presidential palace in Paris aims at accelerating the reduction of carbon emissions which requires new technologies and investments worth billions of euros (dollars). Macron is expected to provide details about potential state aid to help polluting industries to act. The move comes one day after Macron called on the world's nations to continue to take action to respond to the climate emergency at the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Industry represents about 20% of France's national greenhouse gas emissions. Some 50 industrial sites in France, which account for over half of these emissions, are owned by about 30 French and international groups, whose leadership has been convened to the ...

Emmaunel Macron welcomes questions on climate change ahead of COP27

French President Emmanuel Macron released a selfie video on social media platforms Saturday asking the public to send him questions about what France should do about climate change and biodiversity. Thousands of responses quickly poured in. Several were hostile or questioned his sincerity, but they also included rigorous questions about fossil fuel subsidies, sea pollution and nuclear energy. Macron, who will take part in the UN climate talks opening in Egypt on Sunday, promised to respond to the questions starting next week. In the video, he read from a letter from the public asking why he doesn't declare an environmental state of emergency. He said the letter prompted me to ask questions about what we are doing about this ecological challenge, the challenge of our generation. Early in his presidency, Macron pledged to make tackling climate change issues a top priority, but he has come under widespread criticism for not instituting enough tangible change. At the COP27 talks in Eg

European Union leaders avoid deep rift on gas price cap at energy summit

European Union leaders struggled to find immediate practical solutions on how to deal with the energy crisis but avoided an open rift between Germany and France on Friday that would have exposed a divided bloc as it confronts Russian President Vladimir Putin over his war in Ukraine. After daylong talks in Brussels dragged well into the night, the 27 EU leaders papered over divisions between some of the biggest member states and at least agreed to continue working on ways to impose a gas price cap in case of big price increases. French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted his work with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to create a veneer of unity after talks that started early Thursday. He said that together with close technical advisers, I will see Chancellor Scholz in Paris next week so that we can move forward, with our teams, on all the issues. Scholz said the main issue was curbing spikes in gas trading that may last only a few hours but still send prices excessively upward. He sai

France wants to be India's best partner in defence manufacturing: Lenain

France wants to be India's "best partner" in boosting its defence manufacturing and has decided to share the best technologies and equipment in sync with the growing "trust" between the two sides, French Ambassador Emmanuel Lenain has said. Without divulging specific details, the envoy said French and Indian companies are working together on "equipment of the future", platforms and engines. "I do not think any country provides India with the same level of technology. The progress is also due to the fact that we recognise that India wants to boost its strategic autonomy, wants to build its industrial base and we want to be India's best partner in this move," he told PTI. Indo-French strategic ties have been on a major upswing after India inked an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for the procurement of 36 Rafale jets at a cost of around Rs 59,000 crore. "Defence has always been a very strong component of our cooperation because there is a lot of trust betwee

India, US, UK, France condemn North Korea's ballistic missile launch

India, joining the US, UK and France, has strongly condemned North Korea's ballistic missile launch which overflew Japan, with New Delhi underlining that these launches affect the peace and security of the region and beyond. The missile fired on Tuesday was the first from North Korea to fly over Japan in five years. The launch mark the 24th time this year that North Korea has conducted missile tests. We have noted with concern the reports of ballistic missile launches by the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said at a UN Security Council meeting on DPRK on Wednesday. "These follow the launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile by the DPRK in March this year, which was discussed in this Council, as well as other successive launches, she said. Later, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield delivered a joint statement on behalf of Albania, Brazil, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Norway, South
