Officials predict more arrests likely over German alleged far-right plot

German officials say they expect more people to be detained in connection with an alleged far-right plan to topple the government that saw 25 people rounded up Wednesday, including a self-styled prince, a retired paratrooper and a judge. The plot was allegedly hatched by people linked to the so-called Reich Citizens movement, which rejects Germany's post-war constitution and the legitimacy of the government. Georg Meier, the top security official in Thuringia state, told public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk on Thursday that he expects a second wave of people being detained as authorities review evidence. Meier accused the far-right Alternative for Germany party of fuelling conspiracy theories like those that allegedly motivated the plotters detained across the country this week. Those held include a former Alternative for Germany lawmaker, Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, who is also a Berlin judge. The party condemned the alleged coup plans. Also detained was Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss, w

25 people detained in far-right raids across Germany, shows report

German news agency dpa reports that 25 people have been detained as part of a series of raids against suspected far-right extremists across the country early on Wednesday. Dpa cited federal prosecutors as saying officers conducted searches in 11 of Germany's 16 states against members of the so-called Reich Citizens movement. Some members of the grouping reject Germany's postwar constitution and have called for the overthrow of the government. Weekly Der Spiegel reported that locations searched include the barracks of Germany's special forces unit KSK in the southwestern town of Calw. The unit has in the past been scrutinized over alleged far-right involvement by some soldiers. Federal prosecutors didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Germany crashes out of Fifa World Cup despite 4-2 win over Costa Rica

Germany was eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup for the second tournament in a row. The four-time champions beat Costa Rice 4-2 Thursday but it wasn't enough to advance to the round of 16. Japan's 2-1 victory over Spain allowed both of those teams to advance instead, with the Japanese team at the top of the group. Playing as defending champions at the last World Cup, Germany also exited early.

Germany seeks to boost immigration of skilled workers from outside EU

The German government said on Wednesday that it plans to ease entry rules for immigrants from outside the European Union to help meet Germany's demand for skilled workers. Experts say Europe's biggest economy needs about 400,000 skilled immigrants each year as the country's ageing workforce shrinks, particularly to fill vacancies in the health care, IT and construction sectors. Lack of workers endangers Germany's ambitious plans to boost the roll-out of renewable energy, Economy Minister Robert Habeck said. We've known for years that we're going to have a demographic problem but nothing was done about it, he told reporters in Berlin. Cabinet agreed on a draft proposal that would help would-be immigrants from outside the EU get their skills and qualifications recognised and lower bureaucratic hurdles such as language requirements for some sectors such as IT. Labor Minister Hubertus Heil said that apart from providing more language training abroad, Germany would also have to do mo

Qatar to supply liquefied natural gas to Germany from 2026 under 15-yr deal

Qatar is to supply liquefied natural gas to Germany under a 15-year deal signed on Tuesday as the European economic powerhouse scrambles to replace Russian gas supplies that have been cut during the ongoing war in Ukraine. Officials gave no dollar value for the deal, which would begin in 2026. Under the agreement, Qatar would send up to 2 million tons of the gas to Germany through an under-construction terminal at Brunsbuettel. The deal involves both Qatar Energy, the nation's state-run firm, and ConocoPhillips, which has stakes in Qatar's offshore natural gas field in the Persian Gulf that it shares with Iran. As European countries have supported Ukraine after Russia's invasion in February, Moscow has slashed supplies of natural gas used to heat homes, generate electricity and power industry. That has created an energy crisis that is fuelling inflation and increasing pressure on companies as prices have risen. Germany, which got more than half its gas from Russia before the war, .

Fifa World Cup: Qatar fans hit back at Germany by recalling Ozil in protest

Qatari soccer fans hit back at Germany's World Cup protest by holding pictures of former Germany player Mesut zil while covering their mouths during the match against Spain. A group of fans held copies of a hand-drawn sketch of zil on Sunday, while others showed pictures of him in action for Germany. The clearly coordinated display was apparently in response to Germany players' gesture on Wednesday, when they covered their mouths to protest against FIFA following the governing body's clampdown on the "One Love" armband. That gesture was a response to FIFA's effective nixing of seven European teams' plans to wear armbands that were seen as a rebuke to host nation Qatar and its human rights record. Qatari fans appeared Sunday to reference Germany's own questionable treatment of zil, the former player who quit the national team after becoming a target of racist abuse and a scapegoat for Germany's early World Cup exit in 2018. zil, a German-born descendant of Turkish immigrants, accus
