Traders' body CAIT on Saturday called for a fresh review of GST and said a special task force should be constituted to suggest ways to reduce multiplicity of laws and regulations on traders under the indirect tax system. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) described the completion of six years of implementation of GST in the country as a landmark success. The GST regime came into effect from July 1, 2017. However, it said much more needs to be done to make Goods and Services Tax (GST) a simplified and rationalised tax system. GST collection grew by 12 per cent in April to Rs 1.87 lakh crore, the highest monthly mop-up since the rollout of the indirect tax regime. The gross GST revenue collected in the month of April 2023 is Rs 1,87,035 crore of which CGST is Rs 38,440 crore, SGST is Rs 47,412 crore, IGST is Rs 89,158 crore (including Rs 34,972 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is Rs 12,025 crore, the finance ministry said in a statement. The previous high collection of Rs 1.68 lakh crore was in April last year. "The revenues for the month of April 2023 are 12 per cent higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year," the ministry said. During the month, the revenues from domestic transactions (including import of services) are 16 per cent higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year. The total gross collection for the 2022-23 fiscal stood at Rs 18.10 lakh crore, 22 per cent higher than the previous year.

A 4-member appellate tribunal is proposed to be set up in each state to streamline and expedite the dispute resolution process with regard to Goods and Services Tax (GST), according to an official. Each state appellate tribunal would have two technical members (one officer each from the centre and states) and two judicial members, the official told PTI. A division bench comprising two members -- one technical and one judicial -- will decide the appeals brought before it. As per the proposal, each state appellate tribunal will have two division benches and thus will be able to deal with more appeals, the official noted. There will also be a national appellate tribunal, which would be set up in Delhi, and comprise one judicial member and one technical member. The national appellate bench will mainly look into appeal cases on disputes between the department and assessee over the 'place of supply' under the GST regime.
