Google pays Rs 20.24 crore in Android TV case settlement with CCI

Google has settled with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) a case related to alleged unfair business practices in the Android TV segment and paid a settlement amount of Rs 20.24 crore to the regulator. This is the first case to be settled under the amended Competition Act, wherein settlement and commitment provisions were introduced in 2023. After receiving a complaint, CCI had ordered a detailed probe in 2021. Later, Google proposed to settle the case and CCI considered the settlement proposal and observed that under the "New India Agreement", Google will provide a standalone license for the Play Store and Play Services for Android smart TVs in India, thereby, removing the requirement to bundle these services or impose default placement conditions, a release said on Monday. "Additionally, by waiving the need for valid Android Compatibility Commitments (ACC) for devices shipped into India that do not include Google apps, OEMs can now sell and develop incompatible Android ...

Google to face US govt in court over search monopoly breakup attempt

Google will confront an existential threat Monday as the US government tries to break up the company as punishment for turning its revolutionary search engine into a ruthless monopoly. The drama will unfold in a Washington courtroom during the next three weeks during hearings that will determine how the company should be penalised for operating an illegal monopoly in search. The proceedings, known in legal parlance as a remedy hearing, feature a parade of witnesses that includes Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The US Department of Justice is asking a federal judge to order a radical shake-up that would ban Google from striking the multibillion dollar deals with Apple and other tech companies that shield its search engine from competition, share its repository of valuable user data with rivals and force a sale of its popular Chrome browser. The moment of reckoning comes four-and-half-years after the Justice Department filed a landmark lawsuit alleging Google's search engine had been abusi

NCLAT directs redaction of secret input by Google from Play Store judgment

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has directed removal of the extracts from a confidential letter having revenue information of Google, from its last month's judgement against the internet giant on the Play Store policy. On March 28, the appellate tribunal had upheld fair trade regulator CCI's finding that the company's app store billing policy was unfair and restrictive for developers. However, it had slashed the penalty to almost a fourth to Rs 216 crore from Rs 936.44 crore. Alphabet Inc and Google Inc. have moved NCLAT to remove Paragraphs 97 to 100 from the 104-page order, submitting a letter dated October 6, 2022, which was a confidential document. This confidential document was in response to revenue information given by them. This had confidential revenue data. Even the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had maintained confidentiality. However, NCLAT, in the judgment on March 28, had quoted extracts from the confidential document in paragraphs 97 to ...
