I thank these extraordinary awardees and everyone who works hard to make Virginia a leader in these important fields, Northam said. Sanyal is a pioneer in identifying ...
Excess levels of calcium in brain cells may lead to the formation of toxic clusters that are the hallmark of Parkinson's disease, according to a study. Researchers led by the University of Cambridge in the UK found that calcium can mediate the interaction between small membranous structures inside nerve endings, which are important for neuronal signalling in the brain, and alpha-synuclein, the protein associated with Parkinson's disease. Excess levels of either calcium or alpha-synuclein may be what starts the chain reaction that leads to the death of brain cells. The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, represent another step towards understanding how and why people develop Parkinson's. Parkinson's disease is one of a number of neurodegenerative diseases caused when naturally occurring proteins fold into the wrong shape and stick together with other proteins, eventually forming thin filament-like structures called amyloid fibrils. These amyloid deposits of ..

In a breakthrough, scientists have successfully grown sheep embryos containing human cells, bringing the ability to grow human organs inside other animals closer to reality. Growing human organs inside animals may not only increase supply, but also offer the possibility of genetically tailoring the organs to be compatible with the immune system of the patient receiving them. "Today the best matched organs, except if they come from identical twins, dont last very long because with time the immune system continuously is attacking them, said Pablo Ross from the University of California, Davis in the US. Bruce Whitelaw, professor at the Roslin Institute, where Dolly the sheep was created, said that while there was a long way to go before human organs could be grown in other animals, the latest research is an important step forward through starting to explore whether sheep offer an option for the exciting chimeric project. Researchers had recently been able to introduce human stem cells

Turns out, a specific type of protein aids in spreading of cancer.A new study has discovered how Ras protein binds itself to cell membranes impacting the signaling pathways that cause cancer's uncontrolled growth.Researchers at the University of Illinois have been able to study precisely how Ras proteins interact with cell membrane surfaces. They studied protein systems, such as Ras, and how they make up the complex signaling pathways that control whether a cell divides or, in some cases, becomes cancerous and metastasizes into other regions of the body. For example, 98 percent of pancreatic cancers show Ras protein mutations.Ras proteins have long been the focus of cancer research because of their role as 'on/off switch' signaling pathways that control cell division and failure to die like normal, healthy cells do. In order for Ras proteins to do their job, they need to bind to a membrane surface.Stephen Sligar and his team have found that the KRas4b form of Ras protein binds more ...
