SC refuses to recall order disposing of PIL on vaccines

The Supreme Court today refused to recall its earlier order in which it had disposed of a plea seeking an enquiry into alleged negligence by the government in running public sector laboratories involved in making vaccines for diseases such as tuberculosis. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said that it had already dealt with the issue in its earlier order passed in October 2016 and there was not question of recalling the same. Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for petitioner S P Shukla, said that the plea be revived as the PSUs are not functioning and the government was still procuring vaccines from private firms at higher rates. New DNA test to screen your child for 193 genetic diseases

A simple DNA screening test designed to detect 193 childhood-onset diseases, including epilepsy, muscular atrophy and cancer, has been developed by a US-based genomic testing company. The genetic test can be performed at home with a gentle cheek swab and allows parents to gain early insight into their baby's health, the company said. As a supplemental test, Sema4 Natalis screens for over five times the number of genetic diseases than a standard hospital test in the US, they said. For all conditions covered by the test - including atypical epilepsy, spinal muscular atrophy, and childhood cancers - there are validated medical interventions that may positively influence a baby's future wellbeing when introduced early enough. According to the company, the use of Sema4 Natalis should be reviewed and approved by a physician to ensure the test is medically appropriate for the child. "Until now, families have been likely to be caught off-guard by these early-onset diseases, and prognosis is ..

New system can predict chemotherapy outcome

Scientists have developed a new system that can non-invasively identify which breast cancer patients will respond to chemotherapy within two weeks of beginning treatment. The system generates 3D images of both breasts simultaneously, and enables the researchers to look at blood flow in the breasts, see how the vasculature changes, and how the blood interacts with the tumour. "There is currently no method that can predict treatment outcome of chemotherapy early on in treatment, so this is a major advance," said Andreas Hielscher, professor at Columbia University in the US. "This helps us distinguish malignant from healthy tissue and tells us how the tumour is responding to chemotherapy earlier than other imaging techniques can," said Hielscher. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, given for five to six months before surgery, is the standard treatment for some women with newly diagnosed invasive, but operable, breast cancer. The aim of neoadjuvant chemotherapy is to eliminate active cancer cells -

New tech helps in identifying biomarkers for diseases

It has come to light that a new technology has been developed that enables identification of biomarkers for a wide range of diseases.Scientists have developed a way to identify biomarkers for a wide range of diseases by assessing the antibodies we are making to the complex sugars coating our cells. The new, highly sensitive Luminex Multiplex Glycan Array enables the kind of volume needed to establish associations between antibody levels in our blood to these complex sugars, or glycans, and conditions from cancer to autoimmune disease and dementia, according to the new research.Dr Jin-Xiong She, the lead author, said, "For many diseases that kill us every day, there still are no good biomarkers".Sugar coating on our cells is hardly icing, rather essential to cell health and ours. It helps cells know what other cells to bind to; its adhesive nature even helps them stick to other cells. It can help ensure a negative charge on the cell surface that keeps cell contents inside and provide ...
