Centre asks states to mitigate heat wave impact during Lok Sabha elections

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday directed states and Union territories to chalk out a plan to mitigate heat wave impact, especially for mass gatherings amid the Lok Sabha elections. Mandaviya, who chaired a meeting to review public health preparedness for management of heat-related illness, highlighted the importance of timely action as soon as IMD alerts are received in states. "Timely, advance and wide awareness among the people on the preventive measures will hugely support in reducing the severe impact of such heat waves," he said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently predicted that the maximum temperature in the country will be above normal for this year. Since the beginning of April, temperatures of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius have been recorded in many parts of the country, due to which the risk of heat stroke has increased, Mandaviya said. "It is also known that the general election 2024 is at its doorstep in which wide public participati

Brazil's firefighters battle wildfires raging during late-winter heat wave

Firefighters were battling flames in Brazil's northeastern Bahia state, fanned by strong winds and abnormally high temperatures for the season, authorities said. While it is still technically winter in Brazil, with spring due to start in a couple of days, a heat wave prompting record temperatures has swept across much of the country since the beginning of the week. Faced with a growing number of hot spots caused by high temperatures, Bahia's association of forestry-based companies this week launched a campaign to prevent and combat wildfires. State authorities said they have mobilised over 150 military firefighters to put out fires in different areas across the state, as well as in Chapada Diamantina, a national park known for its panoramic views. The Instagram account of Bahia's secretary for public security showed images of firefighters making their way through parched forests, equipped in high-visibility orange gear and helmets, attempting to bring the licking flames under ...

Swiss glaciers threatened as heat drives zero-temp level to record altitude

The Swiss weather service said Monday a heat wave has driven the zero-degree Celsius level to its highest altitude since recordings on it in Switzerland began nearly 70 years ago, an ominous new sign for the country's vaunted glaciers. MeteoSwiss says the zero-degree isotherm level reached 5,298 meters (17,381 feet) above sea level over Switzerland overnight Sunday to Monday. All of Switzerland's snow-capped Alpine peaks the highest being the 4,634-meter (15,203-foot) Monte Rosa summit had air temperatures over zero Celsius (32 F) where water freezes to ice, raising prospects of a thaw. Even Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain along the Italian-French border at some 4,809 meters (15,800 feet), is affected, the weather agency said based on readings from its weather balloons. The new high altitude eclipsed a previous record set in July 2022, a year that experts say was particularly devastating for the glaciers of Switzerland. Readings have been taken on the zero-degree altitude ..

Heatwave unlikely in Delhi for another week, temp may hit 42-deg mark: IMD

The maximum temperature may hit the 42-degree mark in Delhi in two to three days but a heatwave is unlikely for another week, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said on Wednesday. A fresh western disturbance is going to affect the northwest region and it may lead to a dust storm and drizzle in Delhi on May 13 which might bring temporary relief, Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, said. "The maximum temperature will continue to rise over the next few days amid clear skies and it is predicted to hit the 42 degrees Celsius mark by May 12-13. However, a heatwave is unlikely till May 16-17," he said. Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 20.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and the maximum temperature is likely to settle around 38 degrees Celsius. The city experienced a long spell of cloudy weather and sporadic rainfall from April 21 to May 7, which is rare during this time of the year. May has been historically the hottest month in Delhi,

India will get its own index to quantify heat impact next year: IMD chief

India will launch its own composite index next year to quantify the impact of heat on its population and generate impact-based heat wave alerts for specific locations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. The IMD began issuing an experimental heat index for different parts of the country last week, taking into account air temperature and relative humidity to determine how hot it really feels. "The heat index is an experimental product. It is not validated and we have mentioned that (on the IMD's website) too. We are coming up with our own system now, a multi-parameter product called 'heat hazard score'. We hope that it will be better than the others," Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD, told PTI. Along with temperature and humidity, it will integrate other parameters such as wind and duration. It will be an effective indicator of heat stress for people, he said. The IMD chief said the hazard score will be ready in around two months and "it wil

A hotter than normal summer is expected in 2023 with temperatures likely to reach 2-3 degree celsius above normal in some parts of Indo-Gangetic plains and eastern India during the last week of March, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) told a high level meeting on Tuesday. At the review meeting, chaired by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba here, the IMD said above normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of northeast, east and central India and some parts of northwest India. Temperatures could be 2-3 degree celsius above normal in some parts of Indo-Gangetic plains and eastern India during last week of March, the IMD informed the meeting convened to review preparedness for the ensuing summer and mitigation measures. Too early to speak on impact of high temp on wheat crop: Agriculture Min

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Tuesday said there has not been any effect seen so far on wheat crop due to high temperatures and it will be too early to say about the likely impact. On whether there has been any adverse impact seen in wheat crop as harvesting has started in some states like Madhya Pradesh, Tomar said, "Weather-related challenges are always there in front of agriculture." "Lekin main samjhta hoon ki abhi koi aisi stithi nahi hai. Koi prabhav pada hai, aisa kahna jaldbazi hogi (But I think, there is no such situation as of now. It will be too early to say that there has been any impact)," the minister told reporters here. Tomar was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised here by Plant Based Food Industry Association (PBFIA). Wheat is a major rabi (winter-sown) crop. On February 20, the government formed a committee to monitor the situation arising out of any unusual rise in temperature and its impact on the wheat crop, and also to issue .
