Promoting cycling in cities could tackle obesity

Encouraging people to ride a cycle to work may not only help cities tackle air pollution, but also reduce obesity in urban populations, a study has found. Researchers from Hasselt University in Belgium and Imperial College London in the UK suggests that daily cyclists weigh less than their non-active counterparts. The study, published in the journal Environment International, also found that riding an electric bike (e-bike) is associated with a higher (body mass index)BMI as compared to regular cyclists. In ascending order, cyclists have the lowest BMI, then walkers, public transport users, motorcyclists, users of an electric bike, and finally car drivers, who have the highest BMI. By following over 2,000 urban dwellers over time, the team found that men who switch from car driving to cycling for their daily travel lose on average 0.75 kg of weight, with an average decrease in BMI of 0.24. For women, this was a little bit less. Promoting active travel in cities may therefore provide ..

UK town to be Amritsar's twin city in memory of Maharaja Duleep Singh

A small UK town in the East Anglia region of England will become the twin city of Amritsar as it celebrates the 125th death anniversary of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, with a two-week-long Punjabi festival. Thetford in Norfolk was home to Duleep Singh and the organisers of the Festival of Thetford & Punjab believe the town has strong resonance with the lush fields, intense farming activity and livestock grazing of the Indian state. "Elveden Manor in Thetford was home to the last Maharaja of Punjab for many years and Thetfordians are extremely proud of their unusual resident," explains Seema Anand, a historian and storyteller behind a special 'Punjab to Thetford' film, which will be screened on the last day of the festival on July 21. "But perhaps Duleep Singh coming to live in Thetford was not just mere coincidence. From his statue in the town centre, which is almost an extract replica of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's statue in Company Bagh in Amritsar, ..
