The heritage Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR), operating the popular mountain train services to the famous hill resort town Udhagamandalam (Ooty), is set to get new attractions, including a 'Coachteria', to woo tourists. The 'Coachteria', a theme-based restaurant would be opened at the Udhagamandalam station, about 90km from here, the Southern Railway said. The train service is a major tourist attraction as it winds its way through picturesque valleys and has been accorded World Heritage Status by UNESCO. It has also featured in several films, prominent among them being Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Dil Se' for which the runaway hit number "Chaiyya Chaiyya" was shot on the slow-moving train. The Navy and the Coast Guard have deployed helicopters to search the four persons, who are feared to have drowned off the Juhu beach yesterday, an official said today. "One each Navy and Coast Guard Chetak has taken off from INS Shikra, Colaba around 0800 hrs to continue the search and rescue of the missing boys off Juhu," a Defence spokesperson said in a release. A naval diving team has been carrying out diving operations in the area since morning 0530 hrs, it said. "The sea condition is very challenging for the diving ops due to strong currents and waves. The divers are using grapnels to avoid being swept by the strong currents. The diving team will be turned around by 0900hrs and continue the operation," the release added. Union tourism minister Alphons Kannanthanam today demanded a five-year holiday on the good and services tax (GST) for cruise tourism in the country. The minister said cruise tourism globally generated 26 million cruisers last year, while India had only 1.73 lakh, which accounts for a meagure 0.3 per cent. "We need to increase the numbers dramatically. I would like to suggest that GST should be abolished in cruise tourism at least for the first five years," Kannanthanam said at an interactive industry event which was also attended by Union shipping minister Nitin Gadkari. He said the suggestion was based on the discussions that he had with the industry stakeholders. The tourism ministry has invested Rs 100 crore for developing cruise terminals in various parts of the country to promote the sector. Sixty-eight minor girls were today rescued from a hotel by a join team of the police and the children welfare committee in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district, an official said. The girls, aged between five and 16 years, hailing from Nepal, and India's Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh district, were rescued from the hotel, they said. Taking a U-turn on his previous stand, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said the Goa Public Gambling Act need not be amended as the existing legislation has enough provisions to control such activities. "There is no need for amending the Gambling Act. In the existing Act itself, there are enough provisions to impose restrictions on functioning of the casinos," Parrikar told reporters. The chief minister had had expressed the need to amend the Goa Public Gambling Act 1976 with a view to regulate gambling activity including casino operations. He had said that the amendment was needed for appointing a Gaming Commissioner who will regulate the casinos operating in the coastal state. He had said that the amendment would ensure that no licences would be issued to any new offshore casinos. Goa has six offshore casinos and a dozen land-based gaming facilities in five-star hotels. Suburban train commuters at the Elphinstone Road-Parel stations here got a big relief as the Western Railway today threw open a 73-metre-long foot-over bridge (FOB). Work on the 6-metre-wide FOB was initiated on September 29 last year, the day on which a stampede at Elphinstone Road FOB staircase killed 23 people. The FOB connects Parel station and new platforms of Parel Terminus. The FOB opening comes a day after a part of the pedestrian pathway of Gokhale Bridge, a road overbridge (ROB) in Andheri (East), collapsed amid rains, bringing train services of the Western Railway to a halt for several hours.
