'Dalit tourism' not in BJP tradition: UP minister
Throwing an open challenge to his critics who claimed that he literally gate-crashed into the house of a Dalit and had dinner with them in Aligarh's Lohagarh village, Uttar Pradesh minister Suresh Rana today said that "Dalit tourism" is not in the BJP's tradition. "I am throwing an open challenge to them to prove that even a single grain of food came from outside. In fact, all food items were cooked in the village and by the villagers. "The programme was organised by the local MLA (Anoop Valmiki) and the village pradhan. As per the plan, a breakfast was planned with a Dalit family the next morning, but I had expressed a desire that instead of having dinner at the community centre, I will have it at the house of a Dalit," he said. The minister's reaction came after reports that he may have taken his own food and water. The trip between Singapore and the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur is the world's busiest international air route, with more than 30,500 flights between the cities in the year to February, a new study showed. There were on average 84 flights daily making the short hop which takes about an hour, according to the study by air travel intelligence firm OAG. A large number of airlines serve the route, from full-service carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines to budget ones like AirAsia. A high-speed railway line is being built to link the cities and is expected to be completed in 2026, cutting travel time overland to 90 minutes from around five hours. National Rail Museum to keep doors open till 9 PM from tomorrow
The National Rail Museum will keep its doors open till 9 PM from tomorrow in a bid to increase footfalls at the country's premier custodian of railway heritage, a senior official of the railways said today. Currently, the museum is open throughout the year except on Mondays. The timings for visiting the museum currently are 10 AM to 5 PM. The new timings of 10 AM to 9 PM will come into effect from tomorrow. The move is in line with the views of tourism minister K J Alphons, who has been advocating that places of tourist interest should remain open post evening. "We are still working out the details. As of now we will do this on a trial basis for a couple of days before making it permanent," said a railway spokesperson. Officials said that the idea was to make a tourist spend at least half a day at the rail museum by giving them a night package which could include a light and sound show.

Meat scam: Restaurateurs take measures to restore customer
The recent carcass scam has dealt a blow to the sale of meat-based items across the city and its surrounding areas, prompting the hotels and restaurants to take immediate measures to reinstate confidence among the food aficionados. Sudesh Poddar, the president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Eastern India (HRAEI), has issued an advisory asking its members to procure meat and poultry from registered vendors. "Members are hereby advised to procure meat and poultry from reputed vendors who have FSSAI licence and corporation trade licence. Preference should be given to suppliers having ISO 9001 and HACCP certification," the HRAEI circular said. The police last week busted a racket involved in supplying decomposed meat from dumping grounds to restaurants in and around the city. Meat scam leads to surge in fish sales across city
The scare over rotten meat supply from dump yards has led to an increase in the demand for fish among people here. Across the city, meat traders are experiencing a slump in their businesses over the past few days, but the sale of fish has increased by at least 30 to 40 per cent, Soumyajit Das, managing director of State Fisheries Development Corporation Limited, told PTI. "If our sale in mid-April was around 650-700 kg per day, now it has gone up to nearly 950 kg," he added. Vendors fill tea cans from train toilet, fine on contractor
A fine of Rs. 1 lakh has been imposed on a vending contractor by the Indian Railways after a video showing some vendors purportedly filling tea and coffee cans from inside a train toilet surfaced.The video of the incident that took place in December 2017 in the Charminar Express, at Secunderabad(Telangana) station, shows some vendors coming out of a train toilet with the cans, suggesting that the water was mixed in the cans inside the toilet.The vendors in question, who were unauthorised hawkers, were engaged by platform catering stalls.One of the vendors, employed by contractor P. Sivaprasad, following an inquiry by Railways authorities, revealed that they were only transferring the leftover beverage in the toilet to sell it in their respective platform stalls.Claiming that there was no mixing of toilet water in the cans, he further said that they did so in the toilet to avoid public gaze.Meanwhile, the Commercial Department of the South Central Railways termed it a 'wrong practice' .
Centre to strengthen connectivity to Gaya and Bodhgaya
The Centre will strengthen air, train and road connectivity to Bodhgaya and Gaya in Bihar to attract more tourists, Union Tourism Secretary Rashmi Verma said. The central government official made the statement during a high level meeting to review the development of tourism sector in the state with senior officials here yesterday. "The central government is committed to bring Bodhgaya and Gaya on international tourist map for which air, train and road connectivity are needed to be strengthened further to attract more tourists," Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) member Arvind Kumar Singh quoted Verma as saying in the meeting. Singh said that it was also discussed to increase the connectivity of Gaya with other airports such as Kolkata and southern states.
