Elizabeth Hawley, an American journalist who kept records of mountaineers on Nepal's highest peaks, has died. She was 94. Hawley had been living in Nepal since 1960 and was the unofficial record keeper of mountaineering activities in the country, which has eight of the world's 14 highest peaks, including Mount Everest. A doctor at the CIWEC Hospital and Travel Medicine Centre in Kathmandu, Prathiva Pandey, said she had been hospitalized for a week and died Friday because of complications from pneumonia. Hawley maintained the "Himalayan Database," which is considered the unofficial record book for mountaineering. Nepal does not maintain complete records of mountaineering activities.

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi and France's Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler today jointly launched the 'easy ride electric bike' at the French Consul General office here. The launch of the innovative electric bike was part of the ongoing "Bon Jour India" celebrations. At least 25 people were killed in the attack on Kabul's luxury Intercontinental Hotel at the weekend, official figures showed today -- almost double the earlier toll released by Afghan authorities. "The final death toll (among Afghans) from Intercontinental Hotel attack stands at 25," health ministry spokesman Wahid Majrooh told AFP. "We don't know about the foreign fatalities," he said, adding 12 Afghans had been wounded. With 15 foreigners already confirmed dead in the attack that began late Saturday, that takes the total death toll to 25. A dynamic facade lighting with 16 million colour combinations at India Gate was inaugurated today by Lt Governor Anil Baijal. A total of 130 narrow and wide beam energy efficient LED fittings with computerised control have been installed for dynamic facade lighting, an official release said. It will lead to 75 per cent energy saving compared to conventional light fittings, the release said. "This Dynamic Facade Lighting has 16 million colour combinations which will provide aesthetic appearance of India Gate during night time," it said. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is working on a tie-up between hospitality provider Airbnb and locals for offering home-stay to tourists visiting the Elephanta Caves island located in Mumbai Harbour. The policy aims to overcome the security concerns due to high security installations facing the island that does not allow construction of hotels and night stay. Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal said the 29th two-day Elephanta Festival, beginning January 27, will be held on the island itself again. After the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the festival venue was shifted to the Gateway of India in south Mumbai.
