Photo exhibition on diverse hues of Kashmir, Ladakh

A photo exhibition here showcases the diverse hues of Kashmir and Ladakh with a special section dedicated to the 'Kumbh of the Himalayas' or the Naropa festival that is celebrated once in 12 years. "Glimpses of Ladakh, Kashmir and Naropa Festival - Kumbh Of Himalayas" has photographs by Irfan Nabi and has been curated by author-documentary maker Nilosree Biswas. The images have been gathered over a period of five years and range from rarely seen Nubra Valley, to not so known Gurez. Even the familiar Dal Lake or Gulmarg are filmed in a most salient way, bringing out a fresh perspective. World's largest underwater cave found in Mexico

Underwater archaeologists and divers in Mexico have announced that they found a passage connecting two underwater caves, creating what they say is the world's largest flooded cave.The Great Maya Aquifer Project (GAM) team - committed to studying the mysterious waters of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula - spent years exploring the caves of Sac Actun and Dos Ojos in Tulum before connecting the two caverns together, reported CNN.The combined cave will be known as the Sac Actun system, taking on the name of the longer section.The cave stretches across 216 miles.The Yucatan Peninsula, where the cave is located, reportedly still holds treasures from the ancient Mayan community."This immense cave represents the most important submerged archaeological site in the world, as it has more than a hundred archaeological contexts," said GAM director Guillermo de Anda, in a statement, "Along this system, we had documented evidence of the first settlers of America, as well as extinct fauna and, of course, ..

Switzerland saw 25% rise in Indian footfalls in 2017

Switzerland witnessed a 25 per cent growth in Indian arrivals in 2017, by recording 7,50,000 hotel nights compared a year ago. About 5,99,062 hotel nights of Indian visitors were recorded in 2016, data from the Switzerland Tourism stated. "Last year was exceptional for us as a result of good exposure through a top ranking Hindi daily soap. A lot of travellers were also encouraged to visit our country enthused by the energy infused by our brand ambassador Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, who is a popular youth icon," Switzerland Tourism's new CEO Martin Nydeggeras told PTI here. In 2017, 7,50,000 hotel nights of Indian visitors was recorded, but there were 20 per cent more visitors staying in alternative accommodations, he added. Several tourism projects coming up in West Bengal: Minister

Several greenfield projects in West Bengal's tourism map are coming up along with development of existing sites to attract foreign and domestic visitors, West Bengal minister Indranil Sen said today. The eastern state, which is now an all-season tourist destination, is expecting investments to the tune of Rs 5000 crore in the next five years in infrastructure and service development, the West Bengal minister of state for Tourism said. Ker rock temple, its premises to be developed as tourist spot

The centuries-old rock-cut temple and its lush-green premises, located at about 1800 feet above sea level, will soon woo visitors as a tourist destination near Kerala capital. With an aim to tap the potentials of unexplored scenic inlands, the Kerala Tourism and the state Archaeology Department have jointly launched a multi-crore project to develop the hilltop Madavoorpara, about 20 kms away from here, as a major holiday destination. Spread in a 22 acre land, the rock shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva and the picturesque surroundings, has already been attracting pilgrims, researchers and tourists for some time, tourism sources said. 5-Star or not, hotels to display status at reception, websites

All hotels will now have to mandatorily display their classification status prominently at the reception and on their websites, according to a new set of guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism. Ministry officials said that the new set of guidelines were aimed at streamlining hotel classifications to make them simple, transparent and time-bound. Hotels in India are categorised under five categories -- 1-5 star -- depending on the amenities they provide. Unlike previously, when the payment for applications for classifications had to be done through demand drafts, such payments can now be done only online, the new guidelines stated. This, the officials said, ensures eradication of the possibility of delay and manipulation caused by human interference. Similarly, the new amendments have set a time limit of three months for ensuring compliance. The amendments have also stated that liquor shops and stores in the premises of a hotel other than bars will not be considered .

Maha to get 30 bike-ambulances to cover remote, hilly areas

The government of Maharashtra today decided to introduce 30 new bike-ambulances in the state following positive feedback after it was launched here last year, Health Minister Deepak Sawant said. "The bike-ambulance which was launched in Mumbai last year has got good feedback. Now it has been decided to provide 10 more bike-ambulances for the Mumbai region and 20 for remaining parts of the state, especially remote and hilly areas," he said. Areas such as Palghar, Jawhar, Mokhada, Nandurbar and Melghat, all known for its difficult terrain, will be covered by the bike-ambulance service, he said. Sawant claimed the bike-ambulance service had been able to save 1,302 patients in the last five months. "It is a state run free service which can be availed by dialing 108. The state has used specially designed kits on bike-ambulances for effective first-aid to the patients with the bike-rider providing primary healthcare," he explained.

WB bets on Gajoldoba in Dooars as the next tourism hotspot

The state government is all set to showcase north Bengal to at least 52 delegates from 30 countries in order to attract investments, Gautam Deb, state Tourism Minister, said here today. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's dream project 'Bhorer Alo' (Dawn) -- the tourism hub -- is being developed in Gajoldoba, about 30 kilometre from here, and will also be shown to the foreign delegates, the minister said. The delegates will be taken there on January 21 so that they could have a feel and gain first-hand experience of the eco-tourism project, Deb said.
