The tourism industry in Goa is complaining that restrictions imposed by the Election Commission of India have hit the business. Ahead of April 23 Lok Sabha polls and Assembly by-elections in the coastal state, sale of liquor has been banned post 10 pm, and there are restrictions on the use of music at open-air premises under the Model Code of Conduct. Savio Messiah, president of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, apex body of tourism industry in the state, said hotel owners are facing booking cancellations due to these restrictions. The TTAG had taken up the issue with the state's Chief Electoral Officer in the past but there was no response, he said. Ruling coalition partner Goa Forward Party has written to the ECI in this regard. GFP chief and deputy chief minister Vijai Sardesai said in the letter that tourism industry was "apolitical", and the mainstay of the state's economy, so some relaxations be granted to the establishments which have the licence to ...
Authorities said a fight between two groups at a Pennsylvania mall led to a shooting outside the building and an evacuation. The Pittsburg Post-Gazette reported Monroeville police said the brawl Friday between two groups of four to five males began about 8 p.m. for some unknown reason. The fight spilled outside the mall through a Macy's department store entrance. Police said one of the males pulled out a gun and fired about 10 shots. There were no reports of injuries and no arrests have been made. The mall was placed on lockdown and was later evacuated. The mall is about 17 miles (27.36 kilometers) east of Pittsburg. The lockdown was lifted about 9 p.m. Authorities found bullet holes in the glass doors of a Macy's entrance and evidence markers were placed in a roped off area outside the department store. Monroeville Mall officials tweeted that they were aware of the incident and police cleared "the mall out of an abundance of caution.
Taking the stairs, cycling or walking to work may help you live longer, regardless of age, sex and starting fitness level, a large-scale study unveiled on Friday claims. "People think they have to start going to the gym and exercising hard to get fitter," said Elin Ekblom-Bak, from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences in Stockholm. "But it doesn't have to be that complicated. For most people, just being more active in daily life -- taking the stairs, exiting the metro a station early, cycling to work -- is enough to benefit health since levels are so low to start with. The more you do, the better," Ekblom-Bak said in a statement. The study included 316,137 adults aged 18-74 years who had their first occupational health screening between 1995 and 2015 in Sweden. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using a submaximal cycle test and expressed as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max). This is the maximum amount of oxygen the heart and lungs can provide the muscles during exercise,

China has decided to build an eco-friendly toilet at a camp, 7,028 metres up the north slope of Mount Everest, during this climbing season, officials said.
Nepal will send a dedicated team to Mount Everest this climbing season to collect garbage and retrieve bodies littering the world's highest peak, officials said Thursday. Decades of commercial mountaineering have turned the mountain into the world's highest rubbish dump as an increasing number of big-spending climbers pay little attention to the ugly footprint they leave behind. Fluorescent tents, discarded climbing equipment, empty gas canisters and even human excrement pollute the well-trodden route to the summit of the 8,848-metre peak. "We take pride in Mount Everest but we are often accused of not being able to clean it... We have now come together to clean the mountain," said Dandu Raj Ghimire, chief of Nepal's tourism department. The government has joined hands with mountaineering associations, the army and local organisations to coordinate the clean-up effort. A 14-member team will be sent to Everest base camp from April 25 and aim to bring back 10,000 kilogrammes of ...

Near the northern Greek island of Alonissos lies a remarkable ancient shipwreck: the remains of a massive cargo ship that changed archaeologists' understanding of shipbuilding in antiquity. Now this spectacular find is to become the first ancient shipwreck to be made accessible to the public in Greece, including to recreational divers. Greece's rich underwater heritage has long been hidden from view, off-limits to all but a select few, mainly archaeologists. Scuba diving was banned throughout the country except in a few specific locations until 2005, for fear that divers might loot the countless antiquities that still lie scattered on the country's seabed. Ancient shipwrecks and even many more recent ones are still off-limits. Now that seems to be gradually changing, with a new project to create underwater museums. Divers will be able to tour certain shipwrecks and non-divers will experience the sites through virtual reality in information centers on land. The first of these sites is
Three divers who helped rescue a Thai football team last year have made a fresh discovery in Vietnam where they explored a tunnel that could expand the footprint of the world's largest cave. The team was invited to descend into a waterlogged pit in the Son Doong cave in central Vietnam that has never been explored and is believed to connect to nearby chambers. They were forced back at 77 meters (252 feet) because they did not have enough oxygen to push further, but they think the tunnels could be 120 meters deep. If the tunnel connects to another cave, it would make Son Doong "easily the largest cave in the world and it would never be overtaken," British cave expert Howard Limbert, who helped organise the dive, said Tuesday at a press conference announcing the find. The three divers -- Rick Stanton, Jason Mallinson and Chris Jewell -- were part of the daring rescue to save 12 Thai footballers and their coach who were trapped in a cave for eighteen days last year. Stanton -- who found .

It could have been a museum, a precious recall of an era gone by or even a heritage hotel. But the century-old Tilha Dharamshala, with its facade of ornate Rajasthani carvings, has been turned into a utilitarian, badly maintained polling station instead. Security forces have temporarily taken over this capacious but ill-kept lodging facility, standing forlorn in one corner of this historic city. Till just a week ago, its outer courtyard was used as a cricketing ground by local boys, many of whom will be voting for the first time on April 11 when Gaya goes to the polls in the first round of the seven-phased Lok Sabha election. The fact that Gaya's heritage value has been undervalued and neglected by successive governments is a continuing source of frustration, several debutant voters said. According to Shiv Shanker Kumar, a 19-year-old student of Anugrah Memorial College, living near the iconic dharamshala, Gaya's heritage should be an election issue but has never been made one. The ..
