Past govts indifferent towards erecting memorial to honour cops killed on duty: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday questioned the delay and "indifference" shown by past governments in erecting a national memorial for police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty since Independence. Inaugurating a refurbished national police memorial and a museum here on the National Police Commemoration Day, Modi said previous governments at the Centre let dust gather on the files of this subject. "I am proud of the new police memorial that is being dedicated to the nation today but I have few questions to ask. Why could this memorial not come into being despite over 70 years of Independence?," Modi said in his speech to police jawans, officers, their families and retired personnel. Odisha: 2 held for sacrificing minor boy to appease Goddess Durga

The Odisha police has cracked the mystery behind the murder of a nine-year-old boy, whose beheaded body was recovered from Unnder riverbed near Sindhekela area in Bolangir district.The decapitated body of the minor, who has been identified as Ghanshyam Rana, was sacrificed by his uncle, Kunja Rana who is a sorcerer, and his cousin brother Sambhaban Rana, a believer of black magic.According to police, both the accused have been arrested and have admitted to the crime.The duo practised black magic on the minor boy and subsequently sacrificed him as part of a ritual to appease Goddess Durga during Durga Puja.The deceased, who hails from Sindhekela village, was missing since October 13. Three days later, his beheaded body was found five kilometres away from his house near Sundhimunda village.In a similar incident, a sorcerer was arrested during Durga Puja last year from the same region for sacrificing a boy in the name of black magic rituals.

Detroit police find 63 fetuses in funeral home amid probe

Police removed the remains of 63 fetuses from a Detroit funeral home and regulators shuttered the business amid a widening investigation of alleged improprieties at local funeral homes. Detroit police Chief James Craig said officers found 36 fetuses in boxes and 27 others in freezers during Friday's raid at the Perry Funeral Home. He said he was "stunned" by the discovery, which came a week after the remains of 10 fetuses and one infant were discovered in a ceiling at Detroit's defunct Cantrell Funeral Home. Those remains were found after state regulators in Lansing received an anonymous letter. Lingayat community seer Siddalinga Swamiji of Tontadarya Mutt passed away in Karnataka's northwest Gadag region following a cardiac arrest.The Lingayat seer, who died on Saturday morning, was 69 years old.According to reports, when the pontiff did not come out of his room till 9 am on Saturday, he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The last rites of veteran Congress leader Narayan Dutt Tiwari will be held at the Chitrashila Ghat, Rani Bagh, Nainital district, on Sunday. All arrangements for the former CM's funeral have been made, Nainital District Magistrate Vinod Kumar Suman said on Saturday, adding that the last rites would be conducted with full state honours in the afternoon. His body has been kept at Kathgodam Guest House here for the people to pay their last respects, he said. Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, a former ministerial colleague of Tiwari, and a host of prominent politicians will attend the rites, he said. Eight killed in two separate road mishaps in Hooghly district

At least eight persons were killed in two separate road mishaps in West Bengal's Hooghly district, police said Saturday. Five persons were killed when a car ploughed into a Durga puja immersion procession at Dumurdaha in the district Friday night, the police said.
