Air Marshal Hari Kumar begins two-day visit of air force station in Jammu

Air Marshal C Hari Kumar, Air Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Air Command, began his two-day visit of the air force station, here Thursday. He was accompanied by Devika Hari Kumar, president of Air Force Wives Welfare Association (Regional) and other dignitaries. The visiting party was received by Air Commodore Shashi Kant Mishra, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Jammu, and Nisha Mishra, president, AFWWA, said a defence spokesman. Upon arrival, the AOC-in-C was given an impressive guard of honour by a well turned out contingent of Air Warriors of air force station, Jammu, the spokesman said. Asian Games medal winners praise hike in cash prizes by Kejriwal government

Two days after an Asian Games medal winner lamented about the lack of help to athletes in presence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a couple of silver medallists have praised Arvind Kejriwal for hiking the prize money for sportspersons. At a felicitation event last Tuesday, wrestler Divya Kakran, who won bronze in the Asian Games in Jakarta, had lashed out at the Delhi government for not extending any help to her before the games. Kejriwal was present on the occasion. "Nobody helps us when we need it and had I got assistance, I could have even won a gold medal," she said at the event. However, Pinky Balhara, who won silver in Kurash at the recently concluded Asiad, thanked the Delhi chief minister for the "substantial increase" in the cash award. Asiad gold-winning shot-putter Toor's father cremated

Asian Games gold-medallist Tejinderpal Singh Toor's father, who died of cancer before he could meet the triumphant shot-putter, was cremated here Thursday. Karam Singh, 54, breathed his last on Monday at a military hospital in Panchkula, Haryana. The last rites were held at his native village Khosa Pando here. Toor lit the funeral pyre in the presence of a large gathering which included district administration officials. After the cremation, Toor broke down as he spoke about his father being a major source of inspiration for him. Karam Singh was suffering from cancer for the past few years and Toor had spoken about his struggle to manage his career in view of his father's ailment after winning the Asiad gold in Jakarta. It was a tragic turn of events for Toor, who returned to India the same day his father passed away. The 23-year-old had clinched the men's shot put gold by throwing the iron ball to 20.75m in the Asian games.

BBC journalist dies of cancer several days after statement

Rachael Bland, a BBC radio journalist, has died of breast cancer several days after she announced on social media that her death was near. She was 40. Bland's family said that she died early Wednesday. Her husband and 2-year-old son said on Twitter that "we are crushed but she would want me to thank everyone who took an interest in her story or sent messages of support. You'll never know how much they meant to her. Steve and Freddie xxx." Bland was a newsreader on BBC Radio 5 Live and had commented extensively about her illness on her "You, Me and the Big C" podcast. She had been diagnosed nearly two years ago.

Gujarati author Bhagwatikumar Sharma dies

Author and journalist Bhagwatikumar Sharma died at his residence in Surat city of Gujarat Wednesday morning, family sources said. He was 84. Sharma, a recipient of several awards including the Sahitya Akademi Award, died due to age-related ailments, the sources said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other leaders expressed grief over the author's death. "Anguished by the demise of Shri Bhagwatikumar Sharma Ji, a noted Gujarati author and journalist.
