Two women labourers were crushed to death by a speeding truck in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh this morning, police said. Following the mishap, in which three other women labourers were injured, angry villagers blocked traffic on the busy Indore-Ujjain state highway for about five hours. Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) of Sanwer area B L Verma told PTI that a speeding truck rammed into a group of women labourers walking along the highway near Badodiya Khan village and later overturned. These women labourers were going to their workplace when the mishap occurred, he said. Two of them died and three others were injured, Verma said. The deceased were in the age group of 25-45 years, he said, adding the injured were admitted in a nearby hospital. The truck driver fled the spot after the mishap, said Verma. Upset over one of their families backing out of their marriage proposal, a newly engaged couple allegedly ended their lives by driving their car into a canal in nearby Tirupur district today, police said. The bodies of the couple, reported missing since February 23, were found in a canal near Udumalpet in the district, police said. Passers by noticed the car in the canal and informed police, who rushed to the spot with rescue personnel and lifted the vehicle out. Police suspect that the couple, in their twenties, might have consumed poison before driving down the canal as there was foam around their mouths. They said the couple got engaged after both families agreed to them getting married. Two lions rescued from neglected zoos in war zones in Iraq and Syria have been transported to South Africa to recover from physical and psychological trauma at a big cat sanctuary. Fiona Miles with animal welfare group Four Paws says the male lions have arrived in Johannesburg on a Qatar Airways flight after leaving an animal refuge in Jordan yesterday. The lions arrived emaciated, dehydrated and psychologically scarred in Jordan last year. Now 4-year-old Simba and 2-year-old Saeed are headed to the Lionsrock facility near the town of Bethlehem. Some of the 80 lions at the facility came from a German circus and zoos in France, Romania and Congo. Others are from South African captive-bred lion operations that often earmark the predators for "trophy" killings by customers.
