India diversifies exports as shipments to US decline: SBI research report

Share of India's merchandise exports to other countries increased as shipments to the US declined since July 2025, indicating diversification of export basket across product categories, according to an SBI research report. Cumulative exports to the US also registered a growth of 13 per cent to USD 45 billion in the April-September period from USD 40 billion in the year-ago period, though there could be some front-loading effects to the aftermath, with September figures registering negative year-on-year growth of about 12 per cent, said 'Ecowrap', the SBI's research report. The report further said the share of the US in India's exports has been declining since July 2025, falling to 15 per cent in September, mainly because of a decline in exports of marine products, precious and semi-precious stones, ready-made

India could cut trade costs and boost exports through CPTA: Report

India stands to reduce trade costs and significantly boost export competitiveness by embracing paperless trading systems, with such initiatives expected to cut trade costs of economies in the Asia-Pacific region by about 25 per cent, according to a joint report by policy think tanks ICRIER and RIS. Cross-border paperless trade, which builds on the broader idea of paperless trade and refers to conducting trade through electronic communication, is gaining momentum regionally with the Framework Agreement on Facilitation of Cross-Border Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific (CPTA) being a key driver. Countries joining this agreement benefit from streamlined trade procedures, lower logistics costs, and improved regulatory cooperation. As of January 2025, 16 countries are a part of the CPTA. India has taken multiple domestic reforms, including the Single Window Interface for Facilitating Trade (SWIFT) and electronic handling of indirect tax documents, yet it has not joined the CPTA so .

Govt working overtime to cushion export sectors against US tariffs: CEA

Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Anantha Nageswaran on Saturday said the central government, along with various stakeholders, are actively working overtime to cushion export sectors in view of the recent imposition of an additional 25 per cent tariff by the United States. The US has imposed a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods entering America from August 27. Nageswaran highlighted that crises, whether minor or major, often act as catalysts, providing focus and purpose for all segments of societyincluding the government, private sector, and householdsto undertake necessary actions that might otherwise have been delayed. Since the tariffs took effect, "Conversations have been happening in the last three to four days", involving various exporting and representative bodies, private sector export promotion agencies, and the ministry, he said. Tirupur, Noida, Surat exporters halt production amid high US tariffs: FIEO

Apex exporters body FIEO on Tuesday expressed serious concerns over high US tariffs on Indian goods and said that textiles and apparel manufacturers in Tirupur, Noida, and Surat have halted production amid worsening cost competitiveness due to these steep duties. The US duties on Indian goods will increase to 50 per cent from August 27. The move will severely disrupt the flow of Indian goods to its largest export market, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President S C Ralhan said. He described the development as a setback and stated that it can severely impact India's exports to the US, with about 55 per cent of India's US-bound shipments (worth USD 47-48 billion) now exposed to pricing disadvantages of 30-35 per cent, rendering them uncompetitive in comparison to its competitors from China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines and other Southeast and South Asian countries. US tariff hike to cut India's shrimp exports by 7-9% in FY26: Crisil

The proposed increase in tariff by the US, along with additional financial penalties, is likely to impact shrimp export volumes by 7-9 per cent this financial year, Crisil Ratings said on Friday. Indian shrimp exporters face an unprecedented new challenge in the US market, which contributes close to 48 per cent of their exports, Crisil Ratings Senior Director Rahul Guha said in a statement. US President Donald Trump has announced 25 per cent tariffs on India, plus a 'penalty' for its trade with Russia. The tariffs will come into effect from August 7. "With the proposed increase in tariff by the US, along with additional financial penalties, countervailing duty of 5.77 per cent imposed last year and the existing anti-dumping duties, India will be one of the highest taxed major shrimp exporters in the US market," he noted. In contrast, Ecuador, the largest shrimp exporter globally, faces just 10 per cent tariff and countervailing duties of 3-4 per cent in the US, he said. The operat

India eyes rapeseed meal export revival to China as price gap widens

India is aiming to regain its market share in China's rapeseed meal imports, taking advantage of the commodity's lower price as compared to the international rate amid global supply constraints, industry body SEA said on Monday. Indian rapeseed meal is trading at USD 202 per tonne (Ex-Kandla FAS) as compared to international price of USD 308 per tonne (Ex-Hamburg). This creates a compelling opportunity for Indian exporters. The Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA) has urged Ministry of Commerce to negotiate with Chinese authorities for relaxed import conditions. Currently, only three Indian facilities registered with China's General Administration of Customs are permitted to export rapeseed meal to the Chinese market, it said in a statement. China, a major consumer of rapeseed meal for animal feed, sources most imports from Canada and the European Union, where supplies have tightened and prices have risen. "Given the prevailing supply constraints and rising costs, India now has a

Boosting exports and cutting imports key to India's strength: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said India will have to increase its exports and reduce imports to emerge as a stronger nation in the global community. Addressing an international conference on Vision 2047 Prosperous and Great Bharat, Gadkari suggested that the imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the US was a "blessing in disguise" for India as newer markets are now opening up for the domestic industry. "If you want to make villages prosperous and the nation stronger, one thing is clear we have to increase our exports and reduce imports. I would not take the name of any country, but whatever is happening today, it is a blessing in disguise for us," he said, in an apparent reference to the tariffs imposed by the US. Gadkari said the Indian sugar industry received an order of 1,000 containers from the US. "These are the ways if someone faces a loss, someone else profits. It is a plain case of demand and supply," the minister said.

Indian firms should avoid re-routing of goods from China to US: GTRI

Domestic exporters should not use India as a destination for re-routing goods originating from high-tariff countries like China to the US, economic think tank GTRI said on Thursday. Instead of re-routing, Indian exporters should build genuine value addition, supply chain transparency, and adhere to US customs rules, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. Cautioning against "shortcuts", GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said Indian firms need to build on genuine value addition, supply chain transparency, and comply with US customs rules. For countries like India, the opportunity is real, but only if exporters play by the rules. He added that exporters often misunderstood US non-preferential rules of origin (RoO), which determine a product's true origin. If a product contains high Chinese content and fails to meet the substantial transformation test, it may still be classified as Chinese, regardless of where it was assembled and subjected to punitive tariffs.
