Gill targets ideal combo of 20-wicket attack, batting depth in England

Less than 24 hours before the second Test, India captain Shubman Gill said the team management has not yet locked in a combination that allows them to take 20 wickets and score runs on potentially flat wickets in the unusually hot English summer. Gill also did not commit to premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah playing at Edgbaston despite being available for selection. The clarity, however, was provided on his preference for a second spinner over a pacer especially with the old Dukes ball making run scoring a lot easier for the opposition. Bumrah bhai is definitely available. We are trying to find the right combination where we can take 20 wickets and score runs as well on these kind of wickets. We just thought we are going to have a final look today once we come to the ground and see what kind of combination that we want to go with tomorrow, Gill said on the eve of the second Test. Our first priority would always be on these kind of wickets, how we can get 20 wickets rather than playing t

ENG vs IND: Gill aims to decode Dukes ball's evolution from 2018 to 2025

The rapidly evolving behaviour of Dukes, including the ball going soft 40 overs onwards, has created a major challenge for the Shubman Gill-led India in England. Gill has been getting inputs from the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, who have been to England multiple times, on how the Dukes has evolved in the last 7-8 years. At Leeds, India missed the services of a second spinner on day five as England made short work of the 371-run target to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. India needed their pacers to strike in the run chase but, barring Bumrah, none was able to make inroads. By the time the new ball was due, the game was as good as over. On Tuesday, Gill spoke about his preference for an extra spinner in the 40-60 over phase over a pacer who would find it tough to contain the aggressive England batters. I have spoken to some of the players who were part of the 2018-19 series and they said the balls were slightly different in that series. Even in the 2021

Indian players told to stay indoors after suspicious package found: Report

The Indian cricket team, staying in the heart of Birmingham, was asked to stay indoors after a suspicious package was found at the nearby Centenary Square. A BCCI source confirmed to PTI that players were asked not to venture out following a social media post from the Birmingham City Centre Police. Usually the Indian cricketers explore the areas close to the team hotel and ahead of the second Test, they were frequenting the bustling Broad Street. A total of eight players including captain Shubman Gill turned up for training at Edgbaston while the other 10 members had an off day. We've currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package, read a post from Birmingham City Centre Police on X. We were alerted just before 3pm, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it's assessed. Please avoid the area, the message read. However, an hour later police lifted the cordon.

If IND vs ENG series is on the line & Bumrah is fit, he has to play: Bell

Former England batter Ian Bell has opined that if Jasprit Bumrah is fit, India should not limit him to just three Tests to manage his workload, given the high profile of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar series. There is a question mark over Jasprit Bumrah's availability for the second Test beginning in Birmingham on Wednesday with India skipper Shubman Gill saying a decision on his lead pacer will be taken only after taking a look at the pitch. Gill has, however, said that Bumrah is available for selection. "I'd be amazed if he (Bumrah) only plays three Tests this summer. He's the best fast bowler in the world, and if he doesn't play, England will be very, very happy," Bell, who has more than 7,700 runs under his belt in 118 Tests, told PTI Videos. "Of course, you want to protect him (Bumrah), but if the series is on the line and he's fit, he has to play," said the the former right-handed batter. The 43-year-old feels spin could play a role as the match progresses. The spinners

England beat India by one wicket in 2nd Youth ODI, level series 1-1

Riding on captain Thomas Rew's brilliant century, England scraped through with a narrow one-wicket win over India in the second Youth ODI to level the five-match series 1-1 here on Monday. India, who had won the first match by six wickets at Hove on June 27, posted 290 in 49 overs after being asked to bat. England then chased down the target with three balls to spare, reaching 291 for 9 in 49.3 overs. Medium pacer RS Ambrish took four wickets for 80 runs from his 10 overs to raise hopes of an Indian victory but the last English pair of Sebastian Morgan (20 not out) and Alex French (3 not out) survived the final two overs to give their side a win in a see-saw battle. The home side made a shaky start in their run chase with opener BJ Dawkins (7) back in the dressing room in the second over at team score of just seven. They slumped to 46 for 2 and then to 47 for 3 in the 12th over with Ambrish taking the wickets of Ben Mayes (27) and Isaac Mohammed (11) in quick succession. But Rew (1

ENG W vs IND W 2nd T20 preview: Will Harmanpreet find place in India's XI?

A confident India will aim to capitalise on opener Smriti Mandhana's sublime form and hope for skipper Harmanpreet Kaur's availability to achieve another big win when the second Women's T20I against England is played here on Tuesday. Mandhana's maiden T20I century in the opening game at Nottingham guided India to a massive 97-run win, and the likely presence of skipper Harmanpreet -- who was rested for the first game as a precautionary measure following a head injury sustained during a warm-up match -- for the second game would only add to the hosts' worries. Mandhana's stroke-filled century would have rung alarm bells in the English camp as it tries to find answers to the dramatic batting collapse it suffered while chasing a steep 210-run total. It was a day when Mandhana's entertaining innings brought the hosts under tremendous pressure, which was later exploited by the Indian bowlers. India struck twice early and the slow bowler, especially left-arm spinner Shree Charani who ...
