Mudslide blocks tunnel in Meghalaya, traffic in NE states affected: Police

A mudslide caused by incessant rainfall blocked the Sonapur tunnel on NH 6 in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district on Saturday blocking traffic movement to Tripura, Mizoram and Assam's Barak valley, police said. The mudslide was caused by incessant rainfall in the state in the past 24 hours. Two vehicles were stuck in the mudslide, Superintendent of Police, Jagpal S Dhanoa told PTI. He said the NHAI was informed for necessary clearance and to make sure traffic on the important NH 6 connecting to three other north eastern states flow normally. Earthmovers and personnel were put to work to clear the debris and the stuck vehicles, an NHAI official said.

Railways constitutes 4-member committee to probe bridge collapse in Mizoram

The Ministry of Railways has constituted a four-member high-level committee to inquire into the cause of the collapse of a under construction railway bridge in Mizoram's Aizawl district in which 22 workers were killed, officials said on Friday. The committee will submit its report within one month from the date of formation, according to the order issued by the Railways ministry on Thursday. The four-members of the committee are BP Awasthi of RDSO, Dr Dipti Ranjan Sahoo of IIT Delhi Sharad Kumar Agarwal of IRICEN and Sandeep Sharma, Chief Bridge Engineer, NF Railway, the order said. Works-I branch of the Railway board will be the nodal branch for the functioning of the committee and submission of report for consideration by the railway board, implementation of the committee's recommendation and all related issues..., the order said. Thomas Cook India reports Rs 71 cr profit in Q1, revenue at Rs 1,932 cr

Omni-channel travel services firm Thomas Cook India on Thursday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 70.9 crore in the June quarter. The firm had reported a loss of Rs 6.9 crore in the year-ago period. The company's total income from operations grew to Rs 1,931.8 crore during the first quarter of the current fiscal from Rs 989.8 crore in the year-ago period, a regulatory filing to the BSE showed. However, its total expenses also rose to Rs 1,831 crore for the quarter under review from Rs 990 crore in the corresponding period last year. Thomas Cook (India) Ltd (TCIL) Executive Chairman Madhavan Menon said, "On the back of a commendable performance in FY23, the first quarter of FY24 has seen yet another very strong performance by the TCIL Group with operating EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation) at Rs 1,474 million (Rs 147.4 crore) versus Rs 555 million (Rs 55.5 crore) for Q1 FY23." New York City expects to host over 300,000 Indian travellers this year

New York City is hoping to welcome 3.06 lakh travellers from India this year as the city witnesses economic recovery that has helped the growing momentum in tourist footfalls, New York City Tourism and Conventions EVP, Global Communications, Tiffany Townsend has said. "The pace of tourism's rebound helps fuel New York City's economic recovery, having supported approximately 3,40,000 jobs in the full leisure and hospitality sector, more than USD 40 billion in direct visitor spending and approximately USD 60 billion in total economic impact for 2022. NYC expects to welcome 11.4 million international visitors this year, including 306,000 travellers from India," Townsend told PTI in an emailed interaction. Union Minister Reddy invites US businesses to invest in tourism sector

Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) G Kishan Reddy invited US businesses and companies to invest in India's vibrant and diverse tourism sector. Reddy, who arrived here on Thursday for a five-day visit, sought investment while addressing a community reception organised at the Consulate General of India in New York. 2,000 tourists stranded in Sikkim as rainfall leads to road blockage

Over 2,000 domestic and foreign tourists were stranded in North Sikkim due to a road blockade following incessant rainfall since Thursday, officials said. The road from North Sikkim district headquarters Mangan to Chungthang has been blocked at Pegong Supply Khola, disrupting vehicular traffic, the officials said. As a result, 1,975 domestic and 36 foreign tourists were stranded at hotels in Lachen and Lachung areas considered gateways to various places with scenic beauty. Of the foreign tourists, 23 are from Bangladesh, 10 from the US and three from Singapore. As many as 345 four-wheelers and 11 motorbikes were also stuck at various places in North Sikkim, the officials said. The road clearance works will begin once the rain stops, they added.

Sterling Holidays to add new hotel each month to cash in on tourism growth

Sterling Holidays Resorts Ltd, a part of Thomas Cook India group, plans to add a new hotel every month in the second half of this year to cash in on the robust growth witnessed in domestic tourism, according to a top group official. The company expects the number of properties to increase to 55 during the course of next year, Thomas Cook (India) Chairman and Managing Director Madhavan Menon told PTI. As on April 30, 2023 Sterling has 2,447 rooms across 40 resorts, out of which 15 company-owned resorts, 10 leased and 15 management contracts. It plans to add 188 rooms across six resorts in the first half of the current financial year. "Sterling Holidays Resorts, which is becoming a hospitality business from what was originally conceived as a timeshare, is going to add a new hotel every month in the second half of this year," he said. Heliports in all districts will boost tourism in the state, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said upon his arrival here on Tuesday. Sukhu, who will attend an Abhar rally near Tapovan here, said efforts would be made to ensure that all district headquarters had a heliport within a year. He said clearances had been given for social impact assessments to review the effects of infrastructure projects and other development interventions with regards to the expansion of Kangra-Gaggal Airport and the government will look into the prospect of increasing tourist stay in Dharamsala, he added. Speaking on de-notifying the projects announced by the previous BJP government after April 1, 2022, Sukhu said the new institutions had been opened without budget allocation to woo voters with eye on Assembly polls. Only 80% occupancy in Shimla on New Year, lowest in past four decades

In a bid to give a fillip to mine tourism, eight eco-parks have been constructed recently in different parts of the country and two more will be completed in the ongoing financial year, the government said on Friday. The said eco-parks are being developed on reclaimed land. Coal and mines minister Pralhad Joshi had inaugurated Jhurey/Bal Gangadhar Tilak eco-park of Coal India arm WCL in October. NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) has entered into a pact with Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) recently to promote eco-tourism at mine-I and mine-II and display sustainable mining activities.
