Joe Biden seeks broad assessment of China's intelligence capabilities: WH

President Joe Biden has directed the US Intelligence community to do a "broad assessment" of China's intelligence capabilities after assuming office, the White House said following the detection of a spy balloon and high-altitude flying objects over American airspace. In recent days, there have been three incidences of balloon sightings in the US. A US F-22 fighter jet on Saturday shot down an unidentified cylindrical object over Canada, a day after another similar object was downed near Alaskan waters, and a week after the American military brought down a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon off the South Carolina coast. When President Biden came into office (in 2021), he directed the US Intelligence community to do a broad assessment of Chinese intelligence capabilities and assure -- and to ensure that we were working to detect and to protect against them, John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, told reporters on .

President Biden, Lula to put focus on democracy, climate during visit

When President Joe Biden and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva meet in Washington on Friday, the leaders will share some awareness of what it's like to walk in one another's shoes. Biden, a centrist Democrat, defeated incumbent Donald Trump in a fraught race, securing victory with thin margins in several battleground states. In Brazil's tightest election since its return to democracy over three decades ago, Lula, the leftist leader of the Workers' Party, squeaked out a win against right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, who earned the nickname Trump of the Tropics and was an outspoken admirer of the former US president. Both Trump and Bolsonaro sowed doubts about the vote, without ever presenting evidence, but their claims nevertheless resonated with their most die-hard supporters. In the US Capitol, Trump supporters staged the January 6, 2021, insurrection seeking to prevent Biden's win from being certified. Last month, thousands of rioters stormed the Brazilian capital .

US Prez Biden calls for urgent police reforms in State of the Union address

President Joe Biden has admitted that he never had to talk to his children about how to conduct themselves with the police like many Black and Brown families have to have with their children and urged the US Congress to "do something" on police reforms, days after Tyre Nichols was beaten to death by Memphis police during a traffic stop. Biden, in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, asked lawmakers and top officials present at the primetime event to imagine how some parents feel, worrying their children may not come home. As he spoke, the president acknowledged the parents of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old man who was beaten to death by police officers in Memphis, Tennessee. The mother and stepfather of Tyre Nichols -- RowVaughn and Rodney Wells -- were among First Lady Jill Biden's guests at President Biden's second State of the Union address. They stood up during the State of the Union address and received a standing ovation. "Joining us tonight are the parents of Tyre Nichol

'Made in America' is my top priority, says US President Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has said that Made in America is the top priority of his administration and announced that bridges, roads and highways in the country will be made with American construction materials. Biden in his second State of the Union Address on Tuesday said to maintain the strongest economy in the world, the US also needs the best infrastructure in the world. The US used to be number 1 in the world in infrastructure, but then it fell to number 13th, he said. Now we're coming back because we came together to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the largest investment in infrastructure since President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway System, he said. He said 'Buy American' has been the law of the land since 1933. "But for too long, past administrations have found ways to get around it. Not anymore, Biden said in his joint address to the US Congress. Tonight, I'm also announcing new standards to require all construction materials used in federal infrastructure project

US will act to protect if China threatens its sovereignty, says Biden

Amidst growing tension with China over a suspected surveillance balloon, US President Joe Biden has said that the United States will act to protect if Beijing threatens its sovereignty. "I am committed to work with China where it can advance American interests and benefit the world. But make no mistake: as we made clear last week, if China threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country. And we did," Biden said in his State of the Union Address on Tuesday night. The US military downed the suspected Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic Ocean last week, drawing a strong reaction from China which on Sunday warned of repercussions over America's use of force against its civilian unmanned airship. The US has accused China of violating American sovereignty and international law. "Let's be clear: winning the competition with China should unite all of us. We face serious challenges across the world. But in the past two years, democracies have become stronger, not weaker, he

US is unbowed, unbroken: President Joe Biden in State of Union address

President Joe Biden called on Republicans in his State of the Union address Tuesday night to work with him to finish the job of rebuilding the economy and uniting the nation as he sought to overcome pessimism in the country and navigate political divisions in Washington. The backdrop of the annual address was markedly different from the previous two years, with a Republican speaker sitting behind Biden and GOP lawmakers in the audience preparing to scrutinize both his administration and his policies. Biden sought to reassure the nation that his stewardship of the country has delivered results both at home and abroad, as he also set out to prove his fitness for a likely re-election bid. But the challenges for Biden are many: economic uncertainty, a wearying war in Ukraine, growing tensions with China and more. And signs of the past trauma at the Capitol, most notably the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol, was unavoidable, with a large fence encircling the complex as lawmakers .

ChatGPT bot scripts history to pen State of Union speech by President Biden

If you've heard it once in a president's State of the Union speech, you've heard it 100 times: There is nothing the American people can't do when they pull together. But you haven't heard that thought in a State of Union address from William Shakespeare: Lo, said the bard. With kindness, love, and understanding clear, we shall conquer all, and have naught to fear. Nor from the noggin-knocking Three Stooges of last century's fame: We just put our heads together, come up with a plan, and bam! Problem solved! Let's face it, State of the Union speeches are mostly rote. Presidents roll out a list of accomplishments, a few anecdotes about guests in attendance, a sober assessment of the problems of the day and a crescendo about glory times ahead. To shake up the formula before President Joe Biden's speech to Congress on Tuesday night, The Associated Press instructed the artificial intelligence program ChatGPT to work up State of the Union speeches as they might have been written by some o

China committed act of floating balloon as they are Chinese govt: Biden

China committed such a brazen act of floating balloons across continental America because they are the Chinese government, US President Joe Biden said on Monday. They're the Chinese government, Biden told reporters at the White House when asked why the Chinese would commit such a brazen act of floating across the entire continental United States. The question of the balloon and attempting to spy on the United States is something that's anticipated from China. The question is whether or not -- when we asked China what they're doing, they didn't deny they had the balloon over -- they just denied what it was, Biden said in response to a question. It is not a question of trusting China, it's a question of deciding where we should work together and where we have opposition, said the president in response to another question as he landed on the South Lawns of the White House from Camp David. Biden said this is not going to weaken the US-China relationship. No. We've made it clear to Chin
