Harris raises $27 mn in NY fundraiser, promises economic speech this week

Vice President Kamala Harris raised USD 27 million at a packed New York City fundraiser on Sunday, her largest fundraising haul since she took over at the top of the ticket from President Joe Biden, according to a Harris campaign aide. Though Harris has far more money than former President Donald Trump, the money will be needed to compete with pricey advertising by deep-pocketed outside groups that support Trump, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private fundraising details. The blockbuster fundraiser was held at Cipriani Wall Street in a massive Greek Revival ballroom with over a dozen columns. Much of the crowd stood shoulder to shoulder as Harris needled Trump for refusing to debate her again. My opponent seems to be looking for an excuse, Harris told the crowd. I feel very strongly that we owe it to the American people, to the voters, to meet once more before Election Day." She reiterated that later, telling reporters after landing outside Washington

Harris to skip Al Smith dinner, traditional event for major prez candidates

Vice President Kamala Harris will skip this year's Al Smith charity dinner in New York, breaking with presidential tradition so she can campaign instead in a battleground state less than three weeks before Election Day. The dinner benefitting Catholic Charities traditionally has been used to promote collegiality and good humour, with presidential candidates from both parties appearing on the same night and trading barbs. Harris' team wants her to spend as much time as possible in the battleground states that will decide the election rather than heavily Democratic New York, a campaign official said Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss campaign plans and confirming a decision first reported by CNN. Her team told organisers that she would be willing to attend as president if she's elected, the official said. Donald Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to a question about whether he would attend the dinner. This year's white-tie gala is scheduled for October .

Jury begins deliberations on Trump Train encounter with Biden-Harris bus

A jury in Texas began to deliberate Friday whether the so-called Trump Train that surrounded a Biden-Harris campaign bus days before the 2020 election in a heated highway encounter amounted to political intimidation. "This case is not about politics, Robert Meyer, an attorney representing those aboard the bus, told the jury. It's about safety. The civil trial has spanned two weeks in a federal courthouse in Austin has included testimony from former Texas Democratic lawmaker Wendy Davis, who ran for governor in 2014, and is one of three people who was on board the bus and brought the lawsuit against six supporters of former President Donald Trump. No criminal charges have been filed against the Trump supporters, who have argued that their actions during the convoy on Oct 30, 2020, were protected speech. Video that Davis recorded from the bus shows pickup trucks with large Trump flags slowing down to box in the bus as it tried to move away from the group of Trump supporters. One of t

Biden opens foreign policy stretch as allies shift gaze to Trump, Harris

President Joe Biden is opening a busy stretch Friday tending to international allies anxious about where US foreign policy is headed when he leaves office in four month, most likely leaving behind a difficult set of crises for former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris to contend with. But even as Biden launches into a week of talks with world leaders that will take place in Delaware, the White House and at the United Nations, global attention has begun drifting toward Trump and Harris, who are offering voters and the world sharply diverging views on foreign policy. The more I talk to people around the world, the more I get a sense of profound anxiety about the shape of the US election, said Jon Alterman, a senior vice president at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. Alterman added that Biden's upcoming engagements with world leaders could seem like a sideshow as much of the world focuses on Harris and Trump. Biden kicks off his sp

Communication failures prior to Trump's July assassination bid: Report

Communication breakdowns with local law enforcement hampered the Secret Service's performance ahead of a July assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, according to a new report that lays out a litany of missed opportunities to stop a gunman who opened fire from an unsecured roof. A five-page document summarising the Secret Service report's key conclusions finds fault with both local and federal law enforcement, underscoring the cascading and wide-ranging failings that preceded the July 13 shooting at a Butler, Pennsylvania, campaign rally where Trump was wounded in the ear by gunfire. Though the failed response has been well-documented through congressional testimony, news media investigations and other public statements, the report being released on Friday marks the Secret Service's most formal attempt to catalog the errors of the day and is being released amid fresh scrutiny following Sunday's arrest in Florida of a man who authorities say wanted to kill Trump. It's

Voters split on whether Harris or Trump would do better on economy: Poll

Going into November's election, neither Kamala Harris nor Donald Trump has a decisive edge with the public on the economy, turning an issue that was once a clear strength for Trump into the equivalent of a political jump ball. About 4 in 10 registered voters say Republican Trump would do a better job handling the economy, while a similar number say that about the Democratic vice president, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. About 1 in 10 voters don't trust either candidate, and a similar share has equal faith in them. The finding is a warning sign for Trump, who has tried to link Harris to President Joe Biden's economic track record. The new poll suggests that Harris may be escaping some of the president's baggage on the issue, undercutting what was previously one of Trump's major advantages. The economy has long been a weak issue for Biden: A separate AP-NORC poll conducted in late June, before Biden's disastrous debate with ...

Voters view Harris more favourably as she settles into role: AP-NORC poll

Until recently, Lillian Dunsmuir of Bullhead City, Arizona, didn't really think about" Kamala Harris and had no opinion of the vice president. But now she likes what she's seeing. She's funny. I think she's very smart. She can speak well, said Dunsmuir, a 58-year-old real estate agent. I would feel safe with her because I think she can handle herself with foreign leaders. I like her because she's for pro-choice, and so am I. Voters view Harris slightly more favorably than they did in July, just after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The Democratic presidential nominee is now seen more positively than negatively. Former President Donald Trump's favorability ratings remained steady, although the poll was conducted prior to the apparent assassination attempt of the Republican nominee on his golf course in Florida on Sunday. According to the survey, about half of voters have a somewhat

Harris hits Trump's promise of mass deportations as former head rallies

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday criticised Republican Donald Trump's promise to deport millions of people who are in the United States illegally, questioning whether he would rely on massive raids and detention camps to carry it out. Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's annual leadership conference that the nation can find both a pathway to citizenship for those who want to come and at the same time secure the border. "We can do both, and we must do both," she said. Trump, for his part, held a rally in Uniondale on New York's Long Island as both candidates took a break Wednesday from campaigning in the toss-up states that will likely decide the Nov 5 election. Before heading out to the suburbs, Trump stopped at a Bitcoin cafe in New York City. Trump has recently embraced cryptocurrency and on Monday night helped launch his family's new cryptocurrency venture. Harris harked back to the Trump administration's ...

Trump holds first event since assassination bid; Harris does rare interview

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday made his first public appearance since Sunday's second apparent assassination attempt against him with an overflow crowd chanting God bless Trump! and Fight, Fight, Fight as US Secret Service agents surrounded the stage to protect the Republican presidential nominee. It's been a great experience, Trump said in an evening town hall in Flint, Michigan, about holding events with thousands of supporters. But he also went on to call running for president a dangerous business akin to car racing or bull riding. Only consequential presidents get shot at," he said. Earlier in the day, Vice President Kamala Harris struck a measured tone, even steering clear of mentioning Trump by name in an interview with Black journalists that starkly contrasted with the former president's own highly contentious appearance before the same group. The two candidates briefly put their differences aside in a phone call Trump described as very, very nice even as crowds bo
