Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today urged the Centre to promote small and medium industries in the Union Territory. In her twitter handle, she said she met the Union Minister of State (Independent charge) for Medium Small and Micro Enterprises Giriraj Singh in Delhi today and requested him to "promote small and medium industries in Puducherry." Bedi also tweeted that she had requested the Minister to encourage rural and urban entrepreneurship and employment projects in PUducherry.

Workers at the Gitanjali Group-promoted Hyderabad Gems Special Economic Zone today held a protest outside the jewellery manufacturing and export unit fearing the loss of jobs. The unit is linked to Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi, a co-accused in the Rs 11,384 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. Enforcement Directorate had raided the unit last week. The workers under theaegis of the CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) held a demonstration in front of the SEZ entrance gate demanding intervention of the government and provide them alternative employment amid "rumours" that the unit may be sealed. Around 900 workers areworking at the SEZ,located at Ravirala village in Maheshwaram mandal on the outskirts of the city. TRS MLA T Krishna Reddy, formerminister P Sabitha Indra Reddy and others met the protesting employees and expressed solidarity with them. They assured them of taking up the matter with the Central and state governments.

To create a job-ready workforce in the state, the West Bengal government will provide advanced vocational training in the higher secondary schools, a state minister has said. In the first phase, about 2,700 higher secondary schools have been selected for the vocational courses. This step will ensure that young people will be a lot more employable, minister for technical education, training & skill development, Purnendu Basu said last evening, a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) statement said. Under this initiative, that will be rolled out in a phased manner, the state government aims to foster skill development and create employment opportunities for students across the state, he said. West Bengal currently has 12 universities comprising 600 colleges. "I am confident that West Bengal will become a prominent name in the skill map of India in the near future," Basu said.

In less than two years of its launch, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) (2016-20), the flagship scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) registered 3,16,671 placements as on February 2018.With nearly 55 percent successful placements, the Short-Term Training Program (STT) under PMKVY (2016-20) has successfully trained over 13 lakh candidates, of which over nine lakhs have been certified till February 2018. Placements have been facilitated for 5.98 lakh candidates who were certified by the end of November 2017.Placements under the PMKVY are categorised into wage and self-employment. Approximately 76 percent of the candidates have been placed in wage employment and 24 percent placed in self-employment/ entrepreneurship. 80 percent of the candidates placed in wage employment across various sectors such as electronics and hardware, apparel, beauty and wellness, agriculture, retail, logistics, leather, telecom, security, textiles and handlooms."PMKVY

Dutch budget carrier Transavia has canceled or delayed dozens of flights because of a strike by pilots angry at the lack of progress in months of negotiations toward a new collective labor agreement. Transavia, part of the Air France KLM group, posted an online list of the service disruptions, which are expected to last until noon (1100 GMT; 6 a.m. EST) today. The Dutch pilots association and Transavia blamed one another for the strike. The association says that Transavia pilots working at Schiphol, Eindhoven and Rotterdam-The Hague airports "see no other option than to stop work." Pilots want a new labor agreement to include more stable schedules and a "modest" pay increase. Transavia says that it made an amended proposal over the weekend that was rejected by the pilots association.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon following a security breach at City Hall, Bhalla said the city is working with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force to improve security at City Hall. "This incident, along with death threats to me and my family, is an unfortunate reminder that we need to take security seriously," Bhalla said, without elaborating on the threats. A total of 6,495 candidates have been short-listed for employment by companies participating in the two-day job fair organised by the Delhi government, according to the official data released today. More than 16,580 candidates were screened by nearly 100 companies at the job fair held at Thyagraj Stadium. The job fair ended today. According to the data, 4, 161 candidates were short-listed today, while 2,334 were short-listed yesterday. The fair recorded a footfall of around 38,000 candidates. This was the third job fair organised by the AAP government. The first was organised in December 2015 and the second was held in November last year.
Keeping in mind the issue of menstrual hygiene, the Centre is soon going to come out with a scheme focusing on providing free sanitary napkins and safe disposal methods for the convenience of women, Union minister Uma Bharti said today. The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has issued guidelines for menstrual hygiene management which is an integral part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). Briefing the media today, the Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation said that the government is working on a three-pronged project focusing on women hygiene. "There is another task force we have constituted. I have spoken to (Union ministers) Maneka Gandhi and Smriti Irani. We will very soon make a package programme on how to make these sanitary napkins at low cost, how we can provide women at their homes or even distribute free to girl students in schools and also dispose them off so that they don't create any health hazard," Bharti told reporters. The Yogi Adityanath government is not considering giving any allowance to unemployed youths and it will create jobs for them instead, Uttar Pradesh Labour and Employment Minister Swami Prasad Maurya said today. During the Question Hour, when SP member Nitin Agarwal asked if the government was considering giving any allowance to jobless youths in Uttar Pradesh, Maurya said, "The unemployment allowance, which was one of the 2012 poll promises of the Samajwadi Party, was discontinued by the party itself in 2012-13. "Our government will give jobs to youths... We are not considering giving any unemployment allowance." The SP government gave a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 to unemployed youths, aged between 25 and 40 and belonging to families having an annual income not more than Rs 36,000. "Our department helped 54,190 youths get jobs in the private sector in the last 11 months. For this, we have a portal on which more than 20 lakh youths have registered themselves," Maurya said.
