Google workers across the world walk out over treatment of women amid sexual misconduct claims

Hundreds of employees at Google offices around the world, including in India, Thursday staged an unprecedented series of walkouts in protest at the company's treatment of women and lenient treatment of senior executives accused of sexual misconduct. The demonstrations, dubbed "Google Walkout," follow an outcry over a New York Times investigation that detailed years of sexual harassment allegations, multimillion-dollar severance packages for accused executives, and a lack of transparency over the cases. The employees are demanding several key changes in how sexual misconduct allegations are dealt with at the technology giant, including a call to end forced arbitration - a move which would make it possible for victims to sue. Forced arbitration, a common contract clause for Silicon Valley employees, demands any disputes are dealt with internally rather than through other methods such as the courts. Unequal pay and a lack of gender representation were also said to be among employees' ...

TN transport employees threaten to go on strike

Employees of Tamil Nadu state transport undertakings Wednesday threatened to go on strike following government's non-assurance on key demands, including Diwali festival advance. Trade unions indicated they will wait for two days, saying they would finalise and clarify their stand on striking work on November 2. Their protest could be the second in a year, when state-run buses kept off roads following their eight-day strike launched last December. Emerging from a tripartite meeting involving the Labour Department and officials of various state transport undertakings (STUs), trade union representatives said the government was "pushing" them towards a strike. They said officials remained non-committal on implementing demands, including paying Diwali advance, besides revoking disciplinary action against some employees, as agreed upon earlier. These discussions have been going on for some time and the employees were not threatening to strike work just ahead of Diwali, i.e. ..

LG has 'constitutional duty' to ensure implementation of ESMA against striking DTC workers: Kejriwal

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday sought Lt Governor Anil Baijal's direction to the Delhi Police to ensure implementation of the ESMA in the wake of the strike by DTC workers, saying he has the "constitutional duty" to do this. Launching an attack on the BJP, Kejriwal alleged that most contractual workers of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) wanted to attend work, but they are being prevented by the "goons" of the saffron party in the city. Several contractual employees of the state-owned transport agency have been boycotting work since October 22 to press for their demands. Baijal has imposed the Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1974, on the DTC for six months banning all strikes by its employees. "Most workers want to attend work. They r being prevented by BJP goons. Police not taking action despite ESMA. LG refusing to meet. Why is LG not meeting the minister? Why is LG not directing police to act? BJP misusing LG yet again n harassing Delhiites? (sic)," Kejriwal ...

Uber seeks U-turn on ruling UK drivers are employees

Uber launched Tuesday an attempt at England's Court of Appeal to overturn a ruling that the ride-hailing app's drivers are its workers rather than self-employed, as protestors rallied outside. Uber is trying to to overturn employment tribunal findings which could pave the way for tens of thousands of its drivers in Britain to receive the national minimum wage and paid holiday time. The US firm's lawyers said the "agency model" -- with Uber acting as an agent between self-employed drivers and passengers -- has been used in the private hire industry "for many years", and this had not been properly taken into account by the tribunal. Lawyer Dinah Rose said Uber was not "unusual" in the industry, but "the Uber app enables it to operate on a much larger scale than traditional minicab companies". A prior tribunal had found that former Uber drivers Yaseen Aslam and James Farrar had been its "workers". Rose claimed that the "only legally proper conclusion" from the tribunal's findings "was ...
