Over 10 crore unorganised workers have been registered on the e-SHRAM portal as on Wednesday, the Ministry of Labour and Employment informed.The portal was created by the Directorate of Labour welfare on August 26 this year to register unorganised workers such as migrant workers, construction workers, gig workers, platform workers, domestic workers, street vendors etc, who are seeded to AADHAR.As per a press release of the ministry, West Bengal leads the states of maximum registration followed by Uttar Pradesh and Odisha."e-SHRAM is the reflection of the commitment of Prime Minister who believes in 'Sabka saat sabka vikas or sabka vishwas'," it read.In future, as per the ministry, more than 38 crores labourers will be benefitted from this social security scheme.
The states with more than 1 lakh registrations are Uttar Pradesh (2.61 lakh), West Bengal (1.08 lakh) and Bihar (1.02 lakh), a ministry statement said
Ministry of Labour on Wednesday released a new series of Wage Rate Index (WRI) with base year 2016, being compiled and maintained by the Labour Bureau, an attached office of the ministry. The new series of WRI with base 2016=100 will replace the old series with base 1963-65, a labour ministry statement said. The government periodically revises the base year for major economic indicators to reflect the changes in the economy and to capture the wage pattern of workers, it said. Thus, as per the recommendations of International Labour Organization, National Statistical Commission etc, the base year of WRI numbers has been revised from 1963-65 to 2016 by the Labour Bureau to enhance the coverage and to make index more representative. The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Sunday said the number registrations has crossed 4-crore mark on e-Shram portal in less than two months of its launch. According to a labour ministry statement, workers in diverse occupations such as construction, apparel manufacturing, fishing, gig and platform work, street vending, domestic work, agriculture and allied, transport sector have registered on the portal. In some of these sectors, an overwhelming proportion of migrant workers are also engaged, it stated. The government has constituted an expert group led by Prof Ajit Mishra, that will give recommendations on fixation of minimum wages and national floor minimum wage. "The Ministry of Labour & Employment issued an order and has constituted the Expert Group to provide technical inputs and recommendations on fixation of Minimum Wages and National Floor Minimum Wages," a labour ministry statement said. Minimum wage is different for different categories of workers. National floor refers to the minimum level of wage that is applicable to all categories of workers across the country. The group has been constituted for a period of three years from the date of notification. To arrive at the wage rates, the group will look into the international best practices on the wages and evolve a scientific criteria and methodology for fixation of wages. The Ministry of Labour and Employment is likely to give a shape to the National Employment Policy (NEP) by December this year following the implementation of four labour codes and completion of four major surveys, including one one migrant workers. The NEP will draw a broad road map for improving job opportunities in the country, mainly by various initiatives like skill development, bringing investment in employment intensive segments and other policy interventions. Last year, Parliament passed three labour codes on Industrial Relations, Social Security and Occupational Health Safety & Working Conditions (OSH). The Code on Wages was approved by Parliament last year and its rules have been firmed up.
