The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea of journalist Upendra Rai which sought to restrain an Enforcement Directorate (ED) official from conducting probe against him in corruption and money-laundering cases. The top court said that Rai's petition does not relate to the 2G spectrum allocation scam case pending before it and was hence not maintainable. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan, however, granted liberty to Rai to pursue any other remedy, if available. "The present Civil Appeal concerns 2G matters and the interlocutory application preferred by Upendra Rai has no connection with the subject matter of this Civil Appeal. Such application is therefore not maintainable and is, accordingly, dismissed," it said. : A 23-year-old Muslim woman in Kannur district has alleged she was given the banned triple talaq by her husband in writing on a bit of white paper after which he got married to another woman within weeks. The incident came to light after the woman, a mother of a four-year-old boy, today appeared on television channels and showed the 'talaq paper', based on which the Kerala Women's Commission decided to register a case in this regard. KWC Chairperson M C Josephine told PTI that it was the first such reported complaint on instant triple talaq in Kerala after the Supreme Court had banned the practice. The Supreme Court today said the voters have a right to know the antecedents of candidates and the Election Commission could be asked to direct political parties to ensure that persons, facing criminal charges, do not contest on their tickets using their poll symbols. After making these observations, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra reserved the judgement on a clutch of petitions after the parties including the poll panel and the Centre concluded their arguments. Suspected right-wing activists, arrested in an arms haul case in Maharashtra, had planned to target a western music concert in Pune last year and were involved in hurling a petrol bomb outside a movie theatre near here, police told a court today. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the police arrested five people in connection with the seizure of arms and ammunition earlier this month. Four of them were produced before Sessions Judge Sameer Adkar after their police remand ended. The fifth accused is in police custody till August 31. Giving an account of their probe into the case, the ATS told the court that two of the accused were part of a conspiracy to "target the western musical concert" held in Pune last year as they believed it "was against Hindu culture". The Delhi High Court today dismissed a plea challenging the election rules under which only an instrument given by the Election Commission is to be used for marking ballots to cast vote. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao said it seemed that the provision was reasonable and does not need to be amended. "What is unreasonable or unconstitutional in the provision," the court said. The court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Amit Sahni claiming that the Election Commission (EC) provides a common instrument or article, i.e. pen, to voters for marking ballot paper which could be easily replaced. The plea, which contended that these provisions could be misused and should be amended, said weightage is required to be given to the intention of the person casting vote and not on the instrument viz ink of pen, which could be replaced at the behest of any candidate. Three people, including the parents, were sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a three-year-old girl by a court here. Additional District Sessions Judge Ajay Kumar also imposed a fine of Rs 1,12,000 each on the accused, Shamim, the father of the girl, his wife Khushnaseeb and their friend Zahir Abbas, after holding them guilty under sections 302 (murder) 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. According to a government lawyer, three-year-old Liba was killed by the trio by slitting her throat in Nagla Bajurg village under the Bhopa police station in the district on May 3. He said the crime was committed by the convicts with a design to implicate Shamim's brother over a property dispute. A 70-year-old under-trial prisoner apparently died due to illness in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district jail today, an official said. Shrikishan, arrested in a rape case in July, was rushed to the district hospital in a serious condition, but was declared "brought dead", according to the jail superintendent. The jail authorities have recommended a judicial inquiry.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is learnt to have asked Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to recommend the name of his successor, setting in motion the process of change of guard in the apex court. The Delhi High Court today expressed displeasure with a Delhi Legislative Assembly committee, comprising AAP legislators, for not completing its breach of privilege proceedings against Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash despite questioning him for over four hours. "He has admittedly appeared before you (Committee of Privileges) for four hours. What kind of proceedings are these? In four hours of questioning, you would have known what you have to do. If you have not completed your proceedings within this time, we will not allow it to go forward now," Justice Vibhu Bakhru initially said. The chairman of the Uttar Pradesh legislative council has summoned Pilibhit district superintendent of police (SP) tomorrow to explain his stand on a matter pertaining to breach of privilege. Chairman Ramesh Yadav summoned SP Balendu Bhushan Singh after Samajwadi Party MLC Shatrudra Prakash raised the matter. Prakash said he had called Singh last Tuesday, but was informed that the SP had gone somewhere with District Magistrate Akhilesh Mishra. The MLC alleged that when he called up Mishra to give the phone to the SP, Singh he did not speak. KVIC chief V K Saxena today told a Delhi court that there was a deliberate attempt by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) activist Medha Patkar to defame him and tarnish his image on a TV programme in 2006. Patkar and Saxena, the Khadi Village and Industries Commission (KVIC) chairman, have been embroiled in a legal battle since 2000 after she filed a suit against him for publishing advertisements against her and the NBA. Saxena was then the head of an Ahmedabad-based NGO, National Council for Civil Liberties. Saxena, in turn, had filed two cases against her for making derogatory remarks against him on a TV channel and issuing a defamatory press statement against him.
