A student of a private university here has been arrested on attempt to murder charges after he allegedly pointed a pistol at another student of the institute over an old tiff, police said. Surya Kumar (24) was detained yesterday, a day after the incident occurred outside the Amity University in Sector 125, the police said, adding that he was arrested today. Kumar, a resident of Dasna in Ghaziabad, is a final-year B.Com student, while complainant Vivek Yadav, a resident of Safrabad village in Sector 73 here, is a first-year MBA student in the university. Protest over the alleged rape of a girl in Delhi's Vasant Kunj area had turned violent with demonstrators damaging cars and pelting stones at police personnel, forcing them to use "mild force" to disperse the crowd, during which 10 policemen were injured. Police said they have detained over 20 protesters, while the injured personnel included two assistant commissioners of police. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which is investigating the recent seizure of explosives and arms in the state, has arrested one more person from Ghatkopar here, an official said today. Avinash Pawar (30) was arrested last night and will be produced before a court today, the official added. According to the ATS, Pawar was involved in the conspiracy to carry out blasts in the state with Vaibhav Raut, Sharad Kalaskar, Sudhanwa Gondhalekar and Shrikant Pangarkar, who were earlier arrested in this case. The Uttarakhand High Court has slammed the chairman of Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) for passing a "strange order" on a plea made by the central government seeking transfer of a case, involving whistleblower IFS officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi, to Delhi from the tribunal's Nainital bench. While quashing the CAT's July 27 order in the matter, the court imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on the Central government. It also termed as "vindictive" the attitude of the central government. The Madras High Court was today informed by an anti-graft body that a preliminary inquiry on DMK's complaint of corruption against Chief Minister K Palaniswami has already commenced. Advocate General Vijay Narayan made the submission on behalf of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) when the plea came up before Justice A D Jagadish Chandira. "We received the complaint on June 22. Immediately a preliminary inquiry has been commenced and the investigation is going on," Vijay Narayan said. Senior counsel for DMK NR Elango submitted that as per the directions of the Supreme Court such preliminary probe should be completed within seven days and in case of the DVAC, it should be completed by two months. By August 22, the two-month period has expired, he added. Concurring with the submission, the judge asked the advocate general as to why the DVAC has not completed the inquiry in two months.
