NIA arrests Manipur legislator in missing arms case

A Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Manipur, Yamthung Haokip was arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday in connection with a missing arms case.The case pertains to theft of 56 pistols and 58 magazines from the Director General (DG) Pool Armory located inside second Manipur Rifles Battalion premises. The weapons have gone missing between 2016 and early 2017, a presser by NIA read.Prior to today's arrest, NIA sleuths have also raided the residence of MLA Yamthing Haokip on July 30th. In the said raid at Mantri Pukhri, Imphal, NIA recovered one of the missing pistols. Man sentenced to death by hanging for rape-cum-murder of minor

A court in Jhalawar sentenced today a man to death by hanging for killing a minor girl after raping her in the Rajasthan district. Special schedule tribe/schedule caste (ST/SC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) court convicted the 24-year-old man and announced that he be hanged till death for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Chotiraipur village under Jhalawar city police station. The special ST/SC and POCSO court judge Swati Sharma convicted Mode Singh alias Langda Bheel, a resident of Chotaraipur of Jhalwar, special public prosecutor, ST/SC and POCSO court, Jhalawar, Dheeraj Acharya said. The convict on February 14 this year abducted the minor when she was at a local Mahashivratri fair and murdered her after raping. He dumped her body in nearby field in the village, Sharma said, adding the minor's body was found the next day in the field near the village. Maha man arrested for kidnapping, confining minor since Jul 27

A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a minor last month and confining him apparently without any motive except that he was fond of children, police said today. Senior Inspector Venkat Andhale of the Thane Rural Police's Crime Branch said that Yashwant Deoo Dhobi kidnapped the 8-year-old boy from Padgha in Thane on July 27. The child is a resident of Kasne village in Bhiwandi taluka and his parents had lodged a complaint of kidnapping at Padgha police station immediately after he went missing, the official said. Officials said that Thane Rural Superintendent of Police Shivaji Rathod asked the Crime Branch to handle the probe after no headway was made in the case. Over 20 judges conduct surprise check at Central Jail in Ludhiana

District & Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh along with 20 other judges conducted a surprise check at the Central Jail in Ludhiana today. The surprise check was organised under the "Connect to Serve" campaign. Singh was also accompanied by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Secretary cum Chief Judicial Magistrate Dr Gurpreet Kaur, several other judges, Jail Superintendent S S Boparai, besides others. It is pertinent to mention that this is for the first time in the state that more than 20 judges have conducted a surprise check in a jail. Singh said during today's surprise check, all the judges interacted with 3,350 inmates and undertrials and took their feedback about their problems. Kolkata: Court treats 16-yr-old as adult, awards life imprisonment for raping minor

A city court today sentenced a 16-year-old and a man to life imprisonment for raping a 12-year-old girl, trying the boy as an adult given the heinous nature of the crime. According to a complaint filed by the victim's mother, the girl was kidnapped and gang-raped by the duo on the evening of December 16, 2017. Judge Jimut Bahan Biswas of Sealdah Court here sentenced the accused to life imprisonment for the remainder of their lives for gang-rape and under provisions of the POCSO Act. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each of them. Ninety per cent of the money will be paid to the victim. It directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs 3 lakh to the victim as per the POCSO Act. The amount has to be paid to her within 30 days of receipt of the order. Woman fatally knocked down by car in which BJP MP travelling

: A woman was fatally knocked down by a car in which BJP MP G V L Narasimha Rao was travelling in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh this evening, police said. Another woman, who was injured, has been hospitalised.Her condition was said to be stable. The occupants of the car were safe, police said. The Rajya Sabha member was on his way to Vijayawada from Prakasam district when the two women suddenly tried to cross the National Highway at Kolanukonda village, police said. One of the women was killed on the spot while another suffered injuries, police said. The car then hit the divider and stopped. Auto driver arrested for masturbating while ferrying passenger

An autorickshaw driver was arrested today after a media professional accused him of masturbating while ferrying her in his vehicle, police said today. The complainant had told police that she had hailed the accused's autorickshaw from Malad on Wednesday night to go to her home in Borivali. In her complaint lodged at the Borivali police station, she had said that the driver was touching himself inappropriately during the journey and, after slowing down on an empty road en route, started masturbating. She escaped by jumping off the vehicle and proceeding to her house which was nearby, the complainant stated. An official said that they tracked down autorickshaw driver Rajbahadur Pal (37) today and arrested him.

Minor girl raped in old age home in Gorakhpur

A minor girl, who was working as a cook at an old age home at Chiluatal area in Gorakhpur, was allegedly raped by the manager of the shelter 10 days back, police said here today. According to the police, the 16-year-old girl lodged her complaint yesterday evening. A case has been registered against the manager, but no arrest has been made so far, Senior Superintendent of Police Gorakhpur, Shalabh Mathur, said today. "The case is 10-day old. The medical report and statement of the girl in front of magistrate is awaited. Probe is underway, and police is minutely investigating the case. A case of rape has been registered against the accused. Minor girl kidnapped from Navi Mumbai rescued from New Delhi

A minor girl allegedly kidnapped by a teenager from neighbouring Navi Mumbai earlier this month was traced to New Delhi railway station and rescued, a police official said today. The 17-year-old girl was missing from Navi Mumbai since August 7 and, following a complaint by her parents, a case of kidnapping was registered under section 363 of the Indian Penal Code at Turbhe MIDC police station, the official said. A team of the Turbhe MIDC police and the Navi Mumbai police's Anti-Human Trafficking Cell rescued the girl from New Delhi on Wednesday and arrested an 18-year-old, identified as Mohammad Aslam Khan, who allegedly kidnapped the girl after promising to marry her, he said. Two rapes in Assam, four arrested

A 19-year old woman was allegedly gangraped in Assam's Goalpara district and a minor girl was raped by a 60-year old in the state's Morigaon district on Thursday and four persons have been arrested in connection with the two cases, police said today. The woman was allegedly gangraped by her friend and three others on Thursday night in an agriculture field at Tukura Part-III village in Goalpara district, according to its superintendent of police Amitabh Sinha. Villagers detained a man and the woman and informed the police early today. The police rushed to the spot and rescued the victim who was found in a drugged state, Sinha said. During investigation it was found that the woman had come to Tukura with her friend, who hails from Barpeta district and were then taken by another person to his maternal uncle's house in the village for Eid celebrations. Man held for using school kids to peddle drugs to collegians

A history-sheeter was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Crime Branch for allegedly supplying drugs to collegians by using schoolchildren as couriers, a police official said today. Asif Iqbal Khan alias Chuha, a resident of Sazibai Chawl in suburban Andheri West, was nabbed by the Bandra unit of the ANC and 58 grams of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, worth Rs 1.16 lakh was seized from him, deputy commissioner of police, ANC, Shivdeep Lande said today. DRI seizes red sanders logs worth Rs 6.8 cr; 2 held

Seventeen tons of red sanders logs, worth Rs 6.8 crore, have been seized and two persons were arrested in this connection, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said today. A team of DRI sleuths searched a private yard at Madhavaram in the city recently and seized the logs which were concealed in a container with the goods declared as 'glass', a DRI release said here. Two key persons, including the mastermind, involved in arranging the clearance of the consignment at the Chennai Port Trust were arrested, the release said. CBI court sentences Delhi Police officer to 5 years' rigorous imprisonment in bribery case

A special CBI court here has sentenced a Delhi Police officer to five years' rigorous imprisonment in a Rs 4.5-lakh bribery case, the agency said in a statement today. Tulsi Ram, who was posed at Shalimar Bagh police station as a sub- inspector, has also been slapped with a fine of Rs 4.5 lakh in the case. The agency registered the case on January 29, 2016 against Tulsi Ram on a complaint that he had demanded a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh for helping a person in a case investigated by him, the CBI's spokesperson said. "The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from the complainant. After investigation, a charge sheet was filed in the court of special judge, Rohini Courts, Delhi on July 4, 2016," he said.

Maha: Girl raped & killed in her house, neighbour held

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed in her house by her neighbour at Bhiwandi in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said today. The accused, 23-year-old Rahul Budhawale, was arrested this morning for the incident that took place in Mankoli area in Bhiwandi yesterday, they said. "Around 5.30 pm yesterday Budhawale entered the victim's house when her parents and elder sister were not present. ED questions Chidambaram in Aircel-Maxis PMLA case; records statement

The ED again questioned former finance minister P Chidambaram for about six hours today in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case, officials said. Sources said Chidambaram's statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after he appeared before the investigating officer (IO) of the case at the Enforcement Directorate's office here. The questioning went on for about six hours, they said. While the CBI has filed a charge sheet in this case involving the politician in July, the ED is expected to file its own prosecution complaint within the next fortnight.
